Chapter 22:

Queen Of Mermaids

Swim!

In front of them was a dazzling kingdom with many beautiful structures and lots of houses where mermaids live. There were markets and town squares, shopping malls and hair salons, restaurants, and so many other fun places. There was a magnificent palace right in the center of it.
The kingdom appeared as both magical and futuristic at the same time. Everyone on the streets seemed outgoing.
The four of them were looking at the mermaid kingdom with amazement in their eyes.
"Ughh, it's so bright, but I can see something." Tyson commented.
"Of course, if I wasn't in the sea, I could focus better and see more clearly." He added.
"You can see from this distance?" Marina was surprised.
"Yeah, we Plamenians have better senses." Tyson explained.
"Interesting, I didn't know that either." Camellia commented.
"Yeah, well, they don't really include much information about our magic in the school curriculum, besides for stuff like warnings." Tyson said to the fairy.
"Oh, I figured." Camellia said.
"So umm, before we proceed, I would like to advise you to go undercover inside the kingdom, if that's possible, because I don't know how the other mermaids will react to all of you. There was no person from above in the sea for decades now, but in Corallium a stranger wasn't seen for over a century." Cecilia explained.
"I agree. We don't want to attract attention either." Camellia said.
Everyone nodded in agreement.
"Oh, I know. I can cast an illusion spell to make us appear to others as mermaids on the outside. I must warn you though, this spell isn't perfect, and if anyone who is more powerful than me sees us, they would be able to see through the illusion." Camellia spoke with a worried expression on her face.
"You are a powerful fairy; we'll be fine." Finn complimented his fairy friend.
"Thank you, Finn, but don't have too high expectations from me... ahh, like you usually do." Camellia sighed.
"I'm not stronger than the mermaid queen, that's for sure, and there are certainly powerful individuals among the mermaids." Fairy sounded serious.
"We just need to reach the queen and explain everything to her, then it won't matter that she figured it out." Marina told Camellia.
"Huh, that will only work if we're lucky and the queen is in a good mood." Tyson commented.
"Well, if we swim fast and keep a low profile, we can reach the palace and sneak in." Finn suggested.
"I wouldn't advise you to do that. There are guards everywhere, and they won't show mercy even if you say it was a prank. Believe me, those kids who tried it were punished badly. They had to clean the queen's garden for the whole week. Since you want to get in so badly, here you go, they said. And they were just kids. I don't even want to think about what they would do to us." Cecilia started dramatizing.
"Ahh, okay, I have an idea, but I'm not sure if it's going to work." Fairy said.
Everyone looked at her, waiting to hear her idea.
"First, let's take care of our appearance. Hmm..." Fairy was thinking.
"Oh, I got it." She cast an illusion spell and made them all, including herself, appear as mermaids on the outside.
Marina had a purple tail that was perfectly matching her upper piece of swimsuit. Camellia had a pink one, Finn had a blue one, and Tyson had a green mermaid tail.
"Alright, we are ready to go now. Oh, and leave the guards to me." Camellia winked.
"Ohh yeah, that could work." Finn figured out what Camellia meant just by looking at her face.
"Wow, guys, you look like real mermaids and mermen." Cecilia chuckled.
Marina translated to Camellia and the boys.
"Ah, I know I'm amazing." Fairy giggled.
And so the five of them went inside of the kingdom. They were swimming through streets, looking amazed at every corner.
"So Camellia, Cecilia told me about the great sorceress. She said, "You fairies are big fans of her." Marina said to Camellia.
"Ahh, it's true. She is the most amazing magic user in the world. I actually wanted to tell you about her, but so much was going on that I didn't have a chance, and... I was worried that I might give you too much information at once or that you maybe wouldn't be as interested in the topic. I often get carried away when talking about magic and books; heh, you know that, but I can talk forever about the great sorceress. I don't want to bore you to death." Camellia replied.
"You wouldn't." Marina giggled.
"Did you know that the great sorceress was the first and only human to have a pair of fairy wings? She just one day returned from her many adventures, flying with wings, and everyone was left surprised. I wish I was there to see it. She would say the sky is the limit. Great sorceresses spend their whole lives travelling around and studying magic. She was very curious and would always push the limits of what was known and unknown. I really look up to her. Camellia spoke with admiration.
"I can see that." Marina smiled.
Half an hour later they reached the palace.
"Okay, give me a few minutes to prepare my speech." Camellia said to them.
"Speech?" Tyson looked confused.
Marina was feeling the same, but she still translated what Fairy said to Cecilia.
"That has to be one magical speech if she plans to get past the royal guards."
Cecilia commented out loud.
"Okay, let's do this." Camellia sighed.
"You stay here and wait for my sign." Fairy said to them.
They all still looked confused but decided to trust that Camellia has a plan.
Fairy swam towards the guards and started talking. Marina and the others were too far away to hear, but they saw Camellia acting all polite and professional in front of the guards.
One minute later, she broke the illusion and revealed her identity.
Everyone was shocked.
"What is she doing?" Tyson asked out loud.
"That's it; we are done." Cecilia panicked.
"Why did I even agree to help? I just wanted to be nice and friendly, but now my life is over!" The mermaid was being dramatic.
Camellia turned around and called them to come.
"Huh?" Four of them, while still being confused, came closer to where Camellia was.
"You are the translator, right?" "Guards?" asked Cecilia.
"Umm, yes?" She nervously replied.
"Alright, you can all proceed, but wait for your turn in the hallway until you get called." The guards explained and let them through.
"That's a royal ambassador for you." Finn commented out loud.
"Royal ambassador?!" Both Marina and Tyson were surprised.
"What did she say?" Cecilia was wondering.
Marina told her.
"Ohhh, that explains how we got in." Cecilia said.
We are finally here.
Marina thought while looking at the palace.
"But still, how did you talk to the guards? They speak only on corallium, right?" Tyson asked Camellia.
"I know how to introduce myself in any language, as any good ambassador should." Fairy said with a smile on her face.
After waiting for an hour, they were finally allowed to meet the queen.
Marina and her friends were now in the throne room in front of the queen herself. She was a tall figure with pale skin. The mermaid queen, of course, had a big crown on her head covered with pearls. She had long wavy purple hair and golden eyes. Her majesty was wearing an elegant but simple white dress with golden details. She had a beautiful long purple mermaid tail.
"So you are the fairy ambassador?" Queen looked at Camellia.
"Ahh, right." She realized how the fairy can't understand her.
The queen snapped her fingers. Suddenly everyone could speak Corallium.
"Can you understand me now?"
"Yes, your majesty." Fairy bowed her head.
Marina and the others bowed as well.
"Please, there is no need for formalities. Raise your head, children." The queen spoke in a soothing voice.
"And I think there is no longer a need for your disguise, although I can understand why you did it. We don't see every day a Plamenian, a human, and a fairy. Especially not all together like this. Aren't you an odd group?" The queen smiled.
"Right." Camellia removed the illusion spell.
"So what brings you all here to my kingdom?" The queen was wondering.
"Your majesty, we traveled far to reach the mermaid kingdom, and all because we must ask you a question." Camellia said to the queen.
"Ha, it must be a pretty important question then. Alright, let's hear it." The queen sounded amused.
"Your majesty, the one who wishes to ask you is actually my friend." Camellia looked at Marina.
"Hello. I mean, hello, your majesty."
Was that polite enough?
Marina thought.
"Who do we have here? What's your name?"
"Marina, your majesty."
"Hmm, there is something odd about you, Marina." The queen observed her.
"And I don't mean the bracelet that you wear, although it really reminds me of the one I lost long ago. Ahh, the memories." Queen said.
"This is exactly why I came here. You see your majesty, I found this bracelet and wanted to ask, see, is it yours?" Marina explained.
"Hmm, come closer." The queen was uncertain.
Marina showed her the bracelet up closer.
"It can't be... It really is my old bracelet, but how?" The queen was shocked.
"I lost it back when I was still a princess doing reckless things like sneaking out from the palace to go and have fun. This world was so dull to the young me that I'd search for any way to escape for just a moment to have a break. One day I managed to teleport to another world. There was no magic there, but it was still a beautiful world. It had both sea and land. It was short, but I had fun. Unfortunately, when I wanted to get back home, I realized that I had lost my bracelet. In the end I had to use my magic without the bracelet in order to return home. There is no doubt; that's the one, but how?"
"I found it while swimming. You see, I'm actually from that world you just described. The bracelet transported me to this world. I searched for the mermaid kingdom in order to ask if you could send me back to my world." Marina said to the queen.
However, as soon as she said those words, Tyson collapsed.
"Tyson!" Camellia yelled.
