Chapter 21:
Swim!
"So guys, can you breathe underwater?" Marina asked them.
"Yeah, of course. Why wouldn't we?" Camellia was confused by the question.
"Oh, because Cecilia said that the fizzy drink would probably work."
"Marina." Camellia raised an eyebrow.
"But it worked, so yey." Marina sounded awkward.
"I mean, I knew that it would work, yes. Mermaid magic at its finest, everyone." Marina nervously giggled.
"This is amazing!" Finn commented while swimming.
"I'm in the sea, and I can breathe. Oh yeah, and I can talk, aha, and even sing, aha. "Ohhh, I can whistle too, so cool!" He was happy.
"Alright, everyone, follow me and don't swim too far away so you don't get lost. Marina, could you please tell them that?" Cecilia spoke to Marina.
"Yes." Marina translated what the mermaid said to her friends.
"Not afraid to soak your wings now, huh?" Finn teased Camellia.
"Well, this is completely different. We are here on a mission to help Marina. I always knew this day would come."
"Ohh, so dramatic." Finn giggled.
"Wings are important to fairies, and everyone knows one can't fly if their wings are wet." She tried to defend herself with an argument.
"Aha. You can always use a wind spell to dry, you know." Finn said to her with a smirk on his face.
"Phh, to waste my precious magic and talent on such nonsense." Fairy didn't like that idea.
"Excuses." Finn was still teasing her.
"No, they're not."
"Oh yes, they are." They were arguing in a silly way.
A few hours have passed since they all dived in and started swimming.
"Ughh, are we there yet? I feel so exhausted from all of this swimming and swimming. When will it end?" Finn was being dramatic.
"Ohh, I thought you couldn't wait to finally swim in the sea. Where did your enthusiasm go, Finn?" Camellia now teased Finn.
"I am happy, but we've been swimming for hours without a rest, and none of us is used to moving in the water for so long. Well, I don't know for Marina, but—
"Ughh, I need a break," Marina said out loud.
"I'm just a normal human, not a swimming champion or a scuba diver."
She was being dramatic as well.
"Are you feeling okay, Tyson?" Camellia showed consideration for the fiery boy.
"I'm okay, just tired, but just like everyone else is, not because of personal reasons." He explained.
"Okay, don't forget to tell us right away if something is up."
"I will." Tyson said. He was trying his best to appear strong and kept on swimming.
"Hey Cecilia, how long until we reach the mermaid kingdom?" Marina asked the mermaid.
"Oh, we're almost there, don't worry. Our cleaning duty is never too far away from the kingdom, well, at least not for the newbies. Only those with experience go far away. The whole sea needs to be kept clean, but safety comes first. Various sea monsters lurk in the depths, but don't worry, they won't appear here so close to the kingdom." Cecilia wanted to reassure them.
Marina translated everything.
"Oh thank God." Camellia sounded relieved.
"By the way, Cecilia, what's that cleaning duty you keep mentioning?" Marina was wondering.
"Oh, that's my job. You see, one of our abilities is to be able to clean the sea. We mermaids would always do it to keep our home clean, but after all of land was destroyed and sank down... Oof, there was a real cleaning emergency. Trust me, you don't want to know how the sea looked back then. It was a mess, to say the least. They were asking for cleaning mermaids all over the kingdom, giving us higher payments too for extra cleaning. We were split into large groups and given an area to clean. I'd always hear stories about humans and how it was back then while I was on the job. You know, they say mermaids used to go on land to human parties and perform at concerts too. They say it was a great time and that we had lots of fans who would gather to hear mermaids singing. I loved hearing those stories because I also like to sing—no, I love to sing. I wish the land would come back and that I could go up there and sing in front of a crowd too. Everyone said humans know how to throw a big party and have fun. I want to experience that too. Every day here is so mundane, and when you're surrounded constantly by other mermaids who only clean all day, sure, we sing a bit to avoid the boredom, but when you're surrounded by other amazing and talented singers, you don't feel special. But one day I heard someone saying they went to the surface for a moment, and guess what, they saw a flying ship. They said it looked amazing and that it reminded them of human ships from the past. I wanted to see it too, so I sneaked out after my cleaning duty."
Cecilia told Marina.
"When I finally saw it, I felt mermaid magic coming from it."
"That's why the bracelet started to glow." Marina said.
"Yes, and when I saw you in the sea with the bracelet on, I was sure of it. I was surprised to see a human in general, but to see one with a mermaid bracelet on, I think that's a sign. Mermaid said.
"Huh? What sign? " Marina looked confused.
"That maybe something big and unexpected will happen, like a change. I don't think all of this is happening for no reason. A human from another world to find a mermaid bracelet and end up here? Do you really think all of this is just a coincidence?" Cecilia looked at her with a smile on her face.
"But who really knows? I'm just quoting the great sorceress. She added.
"The great sorceress?" Marina asked.
"Oh, you don't know about her? I thought your fairy friend told you since fairies are big fans of her. Ahm, but anyways, the great sorceress is the most powerful of all. She lived long ago in the times of land, and when humans were way more connected to the earth than they are now, or at least that's how I heard it. Not that I had a chance to see a human in action. Fun fact, the great sorceress was a human too, but somehow, to everyone's surprise, she not only was amazing at her Fragmenian magic but also could use any of the four kinds of magic. She mastered mermaid, Plamenian, and fairy magic too and became a great sorceress."
"Wow, she sounds amazing." Marina commented.
"Oh, she is. We mermaids like to hear stories about her. Well, we like stories in general, but the ones about the great sorceress are the best!" Cecilia said.
"I see." Marina smiled.
"Oh, we are here!" The mermaid told Marina.
"Guys, Cecilia said we're here; come here to see." Marina turned to others who were swimming behind her, looking exhausted.
"Finally!" Finn sounded relieved.
"Everyone, welcome to Corallium." Cecilia smiled.
