Chapter 13:
Stardust
Laya
I lay on the bed in our hotel, watching the starry sky through the glass roof above me. It was so beautiful, and I was happy sis had decided to take us here. The room was so big, bigger than Minerva’s cargo bay, and the bed felt so soft and cosy that I had almost fallen asleep the moment I lay down. But I didn’t want to miss the shooting stars later, so I forced myself to join sis and the others playing a game in the middle of the room.
It looked like a lot of fun, and the rules were simple. You sat on the floor, and at Sol’s command, you had to run to the table and put your respirator on as quickly as you could. I used to play such games with sis long before I understood they weren’t really games. But I still liked them nonetheless, and those skills had come in handy on the few occasions when Minerva’s systems suddenly broke in outer space.
I joined the game and soon ran back and forth with the others, doing my best to win. I did well and even managed to beat sis a few times. Karla didn’t stand a chance against any of us, and soon after I joined, she found herself dragging behind until she almost collapsed on the floor, painting heavily. I felt so happy listening to sis and Karla’s playful banter. It felt like it used to, a long time ago, when she used to stay with us, and I really hoped she wouldn’t leave again.
I had never understood why she had done it, but I didn’t know how to ask her about it, and the reason sis had told me didn’t feel right. Karla wasn’t a bad person, even if she had left without a word, making me sad, and sis really angry.
Sol sat down next to me, and I put my head on her lap, wishing all of us could stay together forever, just like now.
.
“Are you ready?”
Sis got up and turned off the lights, and we lay on the soft carpet, gazing at the starry sky above us as the blue lights illuminated the night.
