Chapter 0:

Demini's Bored

My Tragic Deaths: Miserable Mina

“Sorry Demi, I can’t. Not this weekend. I’m still sore from last time, I can’t go again so soon.” Koko sighed, her beautiful face curled into a frown. Demini watched her twirl a strand of long brown hair around her fingers as she spoke, his eyes glued to her through the crystal ball. “You know I love going down to the lower ranks and tossing stones at the immoral souls, but my arm still hurts from helping you. The boulder we dropped onto the pile of self-identifying alpha males was massive, you know?”

Demini laughed, loud and boisterous, throwing his head back so far, he nearly tipped his desk chair over. “YES! It was BRILLIANT! They splattered like paint, it was marvelous.”

Koko giggled at the memory. She started to say something with stars in her eyes, but a sound from off-crystal drew her away. She motioned for Demini to wait, leaving him to stare at her background. His finger tapped a rhythm into the wood of his desk, careful not to ruin it with his claw-like nails.

A moment later, Koko reappeared with a cold frown, sighing once more. “Sorry Demi, got to go. Paw wants to convince another Australian prime minister to walk into the ocean, and I’m the one in charge of the logistics.” The line was cut before Demini could say goodbye, leaving him to stare at the now translucent crystal ball.

Great. My plans are wrecked, Demini thought. It's no fun torturing the souls of the damned by himself. He slammed his hand across the desk, sending a tremor through it and shaking all his supplies. Demini then rubbed his hand over his face under his glasses and sighed. What was he going to do now?

He looked around his home office for some inspiration. His neat pile of paperwork was done and sorted through, ready to file once the weekend was over. His desk was perfectly organized as well, not even a paperclip was out of place, even after his angry burst. He’d reorganized his office just yesterday, so there truly was nothing he could do here.

Maybe he could find another project somewhere else in the house? There had to be something fun to do, right?

Demini meandered through his new home, sauntering from room to room to look for anything to do. He checked the living room, still partially unfurnished, so no lazy night of reality TV for him. Though Demini was reminded to contact the moving company later.

Still with nothing to do, Demini continued his aimless wandering. He dipped into the kitchen, opening the fridge for no reason. He wasn’t hungry, he’d picked at his leftovers not too long ago. In the coolness of the fridge, he confirmed he only had more leftovers in store.

Demini was new to the area, and he didn’t have the time to scope out the grocery stores just yet, so he’d been living off of take out and whatever Koko brought him when she came over. Curses… Demini wasn’t up for shopping, but he was still bored.

Leaving the kitchen, Demini headed upstairs to his pets. He entered their room, lifting a hand to intercept his favorite, the one large red Atlas moth that always greeted him. “Hello, Laith. Have you been good?”

Demini tended to his butterflies and moths for a little while. He watered their plants, carefully picking out any that had been eaten through entirely while making sure he wasn’t messing with any caterpillars. He adjusted the shutters on their window too. Demini wanted to make sure they could leave the room and join the colony out in the rest of the garden without worrying. He enjoyed their company, their soft and fuzzy faces, the patterns spread across their wings. Still, he grew bored and left them be. Yet again, Demini had nothing to do.

Ugh, Koko was right. He did live a boring life now that he wasn’t getting tortured everyday. I needed a new hobby. Something new, and fresh and interesting with plenty to discover.

Wait a second, speaking of new, he completely forgot about his newest headache-inducing, pain-in-the-bottom “friend” back in the office. Cursing his negligence and Koko for giving him the friend in the first place, Demini ran back to his office downstairs.

He slammed the wooden doors open just in time to see the little glass jar tip over, threatening to roll off the edge of his desk. Demini smirked, the tips of his fangs popping out through his lips. He strode into the room and reached out a single large grey hand, grabbing the jar before it could crash into the ground.

“Naughty, naughty,” he tutted. “You’re not allowed to escape from your wish, little one.”

Demini brought the jar up to his face, the little soul inside was misty and shifting, making the glass reflect his own demonic face to him. He saw his messy grey hair with his twin grey horns poking through, his scared grey skin, his thin, golden glasses and the tired red eyes behind them.

“Who said you could be naughty? You’re a very rude guest. Didn’t Koko demand you be on your best behavior? Hm? If you wanted to go on an adventure, you could have told me instead of being so rude about it.” Demini concocted his plan, taking the jar with him to the basement. “You must have been as bored as I was. Forgive me for not being an entertaining host.”

Now in the cold stone basement, Demini placed the jar on an intricate circle, drawn with white chalk on the dusty grey floor. Aligning it just right so that the bottom of the jar was perfectly centered Demini took a few steps back, putting his hands in prayer. Wind picked up around him, muffling the words he shouted.

“Things are going to be very fun for you and I. Hope you’ll have a good time on the mountainside during Hokkaido’s worst winter, you ungrateful roach!
