Chapter 610:

Hallows' Day Gambit

En Passant Grandmaster

With Mimoko fast asleep, Iori was next to go into the maze. Just like her, she ran into a troublesome character. Seemingly out of place was a pale glowing girl in a traditional kimono.

"My interest was stirred... Stirred by the chess. I demand... we play."

"Sure," Iori shrugged as she issued a challenge to the woman.

"I know not what that is... But my rating... 400 it was..."

"Huh, most folks with ratings are WWCF members though, but I guess there are old timers with ratings that aren't members. Guess we'll just use my board, then."

Iori opened the game by moving her pawn to e4. The mysterious woman paused for a bit before mirroring her and moving her pawn to e5. Next came knight f3 and knight c6.

"Hmm? It is TECHNICALLY November 1st, here at least. But that means it's still Halloween elsewhere and November 1st is Hallows' Day, so... Halloween Gambit still relevant," Iori thought as she moved her knight to c3.

The woman paused for a bit before nodding and moving her knight to f6. "Very well, I'll allow it as part of the test."

"HELL YEAH! HAPPY HALLOWEEN- er, HAPPY HALLOWS' DAY MOTHERFUCKER!" Iori grinned as she captured the pawn at e5 with her knight.

Then to her shock, the woman mirrored her and captured the pawn at e4 with her knight. "Shall we call this the Hallows' Day Gambit?"

"Uh, sure," Iori nervously nodded as she moved her queen to h5.

"A fright it shall be to remember then," the woman proclaimed as she moved her knight to b4.

Iori blinked in confusion as she stared at the board. "Uh... Checkmate?" she shrugged as she captured the pawn at f7 with her queen, winning the game.

"Yes, that is indeed checkmate. You have passed," the woman bowed as she vanished into thin air.

Iori slowly turned to the camera behind her, almost as pale as the ghost she just saw. "Uh... Think we gotta get back to the safety of the van, camp out until sunrise, yeah."

And with that she bolted off screaming, eventually managing to finish the maze in 44 minutes 44 seconds. That meant Miga was last to go, yet she was not in the mood for any shenanigans. Thus, the moment she was allowed to enter, she bum rushed the maze, finishing in 3 minutes, 23 seconds.

"Uh, you are a ninja... Then again, me n' Cece are related, so why can't we move as fast as you?" Iori grumbled.

"I've been trained since birth."

"Same for me, otherwise I wouldn't have been able to keep up with her," Ina added.

"Those poor staffers are probably going to be waiting aimlessly, and after Iori's ghostly encounter, I bet they all wanna just bunker down at home," Astrid sighed.

"Speaking of bunkering, let's chill inside the van," Iori trembled.
