Chapter 10:

Epilogue

Midnight

“Where am I? Where is Thanatos?” I awaken on a rock floating in the middle of nowhere. The only visible thing is the stars in the night sky.

“I’m glad you’re awake, Kali.” A female voice says to me, as if she’s right next to me but I’m clearly by myself.

“Who are you?” I ask, slightly confused about what has happened. Let’s retrace a few steps. So, I was in Washington D.C. with Thanatos. Boom, his mother appears and-

“There’s no need to replay everything. So much has happened, so just let me explain. First things first. My name is Chaos. I’m the space all around you. I’m the fabric of space itself. But, don’t get too used to me. I can only talk to you for a short while. So, let’s get this over with quickly. Thanatos killed Hades, the god of the underworld. In doing that, the underworld collapsed without it’s god holding it together. Destroying the underworld put a great strain on me, which caused the other universes to collapse. This event also killed all the other gods and goddesses. Well, except for you! I was able to keep this universe from collapsing. But, there was a problem. Thanatos became so strong that he started to destroy the universe just by existing. If a normal god became that powerful, they wouldn’t naturally destroy the universe. There really isn’t much explaining why Thanatos naturally destroys the universe, but my guess is that it’s something to do with how many innocent people he killed. All of his crimes weighed his soul down, which caused his powers to become dangerous to me.”

“Then what happened to him?” I ask.

“You were the only being left that could restore everything. So, Thanatos gave his powers to you. So you could create a new world. I’ll be here to help of course, but I can’t usually talk-”

“That doesn’t answer me!! Where is Thanatos?” I yell into the void.

“When he gave his powers to you, he had to sacrifice himself. I’m sorry. I’m really sorry, Kali.” Chaos explains.

I can’t hold back the tears at the news. My love is ripped away from me. I thought the plan was for both of us to be here. Who’s going to rule the underworld? I thought we would be together after this. Why does it have to be like this? Why do I have to suffer alone?

“I need to tell you one last thing, since my time for talking is running out. Thanatos told me to pass on a message to you. He said: Kali, my love. Our plan had an unexpected twist. I know I know. I’m an asshole. I left you all alone. But, I had no choice. I was destroying the universe. You were the only one that could save this. So, I expect you to continue with the plan. Make a world to look over. Make humans, the wonderful beings that have the ability to both destroy their planet and make brand new life. The world doesn’t have to be perfect. Not everyone will have the best life. But, that’s the whole point of living. Life would be too boring without heartbreak. Hell, even gods have heartbreak thinking about it now. I don’t know where gods go when they die. But, I’ll find my way back to you. I promise I will. Then we can make love under the stars. But, until then. Please don’t become too lonely. I love you. I wish I could’ve had more time with you. But, I love you nonetheless.”

This is the day I learned the definition of life. To live isn’t just about breathing or eating or drinking. It isn’t about being awake or being able to think. To live is to feel the pain of losing someone. To live is to feel that pain and still move on. Even if memories of him stick in the back of my mind for the rest of time itself. I will keep my promise. I’ll create a new world. I’ll name it Wrath, paying homage to the suffering of a former death god. It won’t be perfect, but it will be special. The people here will be able to live.

The night has passed, and the sun rises once more.
