Chapter 11:

Chapter 11 — The Calculated Risk

Summoned To Another World

「Thanks for recognizing my best feature.」 Jay returned Xander's challenging gaze with a confident smile.

Liani, confused by the tense exchange, demanded an explanation.

「What's he talking about, Jay?」

「Well, I actually wanted him to pay me ten times more. So, I just let Iris do most of the talking so we could get that contract. And since he signed the contract, he can't back down—even if I bring one, he still needs to pay me thirty silvers.」

A collective gasp echoed through the Guild Hall.

Liani threw her hands up in exasperation.

「I don't know if I should be angry with you for tricking him like that, or should I congratulate you! But... good job anyway.」

「I got twenty more if you want to buy those, too.」 Jay offered casually.

Liani's eyes went wide at the sheer volume.

「That would be great, but I'm afraid the meat will rot before we get to eat it!」

「I see... I got an idea. How 'bout we make a freezer?」

「...Confused... What's that?」

「Well, a freezer's job is to freeze things. It's essentially a room filled with ice to keep your meat frozen to prolong its expiry date.」

Xander, the Guild Master, stepped forward, his curiosity piqued.

「Will it work?」

「Well, it will be hard to build.」

「I asked: Will it work?」 Xander repeated, his voice firm.

「...Scoffs... If I'm the one who's writing down the blueprints, you won't worry about your food spoiling for a long time.」

「So for how long will it keep the food unspoiled?」

「Well, depending on what it is and how long the finished product lasts, I'd say an extra month, or even up to years if the room is built to the letter.」

Xander’s eyes shone with avarice—this invention was a game changer for trade.

「How soon will this freezer be done?」

「Depending on how perfectly you want it to be done, it may take a week or two.」

「OK. Tomorrow, you and your party member at my estate, first thing in the morning!」

「...Chuckles... Pleasure doing business with you.」

「But how much will this cost me?」

Jay named his price, and every mercenary in the hall froze.

「It usually goes for about one thousand to five thousand gold since this invention is life-changing. But for you, I can give a discount that sums it up to three gold.」

The silence was deafening, the shock overwhelming.

「Err... Are you sure?」 Xander asked, completely thrown off balance.

「Yah, I'm not a big spender, so that will be enough. But next time, I might double it.」

Xander finally broke into booming laughter, the sound echoing his success.

「You just robbed yourself heavily, but I'll take that deal!」

「OK.」

Later At The House....

Aunt Louez stood in the middle of the room, her eyes huge.

「YOU WHAT!!!」

「Not so loud, Aunt Louez!」 Iris hushed her.

「OK, but could you explain again?」

「Well, we're going to build an item for the Viscount that will cost three gold, and we'll get thirty gold for every ten Were-Rabbits we hunt down.」

Louez stared at them, the reality of their sudden fortune sinking in.

「Wow, that’s impressive, Kniya!」

「Please call me Iris from now on, Aunt Louez. You know how the Knights can act sometimes.」

「Yes, sorry, I forgot.」

Iris noticed Jay's unusual silence.

「Hey, Jay, why aren't you speaking?」

「I was just thinking on how I'll find help for you if I go on the frontlines.」

「It's okay, we can always hire help.」

「That's a great idea!」

「Oh, who do you have in mind?」

「Well, you'll find out after we finish our current job, 'cos we can't rush this.」

「Um... I guess you're right.」
