Prologue

Chess. Chess is a game that has been played around the world for centuries. There are plenty of chess tournaments hosted where people can compete against one another to become the top player in the world. Naturally, there are also many underground chess leagues. One underground chess league in particular has been gaining infamy due to its use of a frightening piece of technology known as a DESPER. This league is known as the Desperado league. The devices they wield are capable of forcing victims into a chess match, with the possibility of the winner being granted their wildest dreams, and the loser a painful execution. Thanks to these devices, chess has now become the most important thing in the world, with many nations now being headed by Desperados in possession of this frightening tech. Wars are now raged through the chessboard, resulting in nations losing territory, having their land masses physically moved elsewhere in the world, or even having their entire histories rewritten and the old forgotten by all. Many empires have now arisen, leading to calls from many to do something about the DESPERs and power-hungry Desperados, yet none are brave enough to take them head on, except for one person...
