Chapter 44:

Extra 2: What Okisato does at night

En Passant Grandmaster Volume 1

Okisato Tanabe, age 17. Occupation: second year high school student.  Birthday: July 6th. Favorite piece: the pawn.

This young man likes to keep to himself, and keep a low profile, but he's anything but as generic as his looks suggest. This young man is a grandmaster and the newly-minted vice-president of his high school's chess club.

When the sun rises, Okisato likes to sit on the porch in his large backyard, drinking tea. Some of his grandfather's subordinates might join him too, though most will often drink in silence, but occasionally converse with each other. There is also a chance his sister, Otona, might try to attack him, but should she, Okisato will always dodge, sending her faceplanting into the grass.

He then joins his family for proper breakfast before heading off to school. His house is an even closer walk to the school than Mimoko's, and even goes along the same route of the walking path along the Arakawa river.

At school, he keeps a low profile and blends into the background frequently. He's not the top student in his class, but he is in the upper half of the class rankings. Once school gets out, he'll head to the chess club.

As soon as he's released from the confines of school and club activities, his next course of action varies on if he's decided to try hunting down a Desperado. If he's not, he'll just head home, eat dinner, do homework, and maybe even learn a new language. Okisato is a natural polyglot, and thanks to winning a DESPER match, he's able to learn a language in the span of seconds just by reading some text in it. As such, he can speak nearly ever language in the world. If he decides not to spend the night at home relaxing, he'll begin his hunt immediately after leaving school. The moment he makes his presence known, most Desperados will tend to challenge him, arrogantly thinking they can beat him. Not once has he lost in a DESPER match or even a normal underground match.

In the case of the latter, the infamous Inferno's den of Saitama was his primary hunting grounds, but after becoming too infamous and insurmountable, many began avoiding the place out of fear of him. This led to the manager of Inferno's den banning him for the sake of the  business, to which Okisato begrudgingly accepted.

Once his hunt is over, Okisato returns home, or even heads straight to school if his hunt lasts until sunrise. One might wonder how Okisato could possibly function on nights he doesn't get any sleep, and the answer is simply that he doesn't sleep at all.

This is all thanks to him making one of his prizes from winning a DESPER match the ability for his body not to require sleep. This doesn't mean he can't get exhausted though. Should he play excessively or play for a win against someone like a maestro, Mimoko, or Peter, he'll likely choose to rest. Just because his body doesn't need sleep, doesn't mean he can't sleep whenever he wants to.

On the weekends when he's not required to attend school on Saturday, he'll often take the time to relax. If there's a chess tournament though, he'll always attend it. He's quite serious about improving his game, all for the sake of ridding the world of the DESPERs. He usually does well at the tournaments he attends, but should he find himself pitted against an opponent like Mimoko or Peter, a draw is usually the best he can hope for. Once the tournament is over, he spends the night relaxing and unwinding before preparing for school the next day.
