Chapter 68:

Trial of the Shadow Hunter

Veil of the Shadow Hunter

The plan was simple, but nothing about this mission would be easy. Free Yuj from the clutches of the Time Guardians. But as Leegna, Unlec, and the Eyeless creature gathered outside the ominous structure, the weight of the task ahead pressed down like the heaviest of burdens. This was not the first time Leegna had entered this building, yet today, something felt different.

Unlec, still nursing the bruise from their last battle, stood by, a sense of unease clear on his face. He was no stranger to betrayal, having lived it and dealt it in equal measure, but what lay ahead was more than just a fight for survival. It was a test. And Leegna, despite all his experience, was feeling the same weight.

"Once we enter, there's no turning back," Leegna muttered, his hand resting on the hilt of his rapier, the Lost Rapier of Dark Matter, a weapon that seemed to pulse with dark energy in sync with his own.

"Time waits for no one," Unlec responded, more to himself than anyone else, as he stared up at the towering building before them.

The Eyeless creature, always silent, emitted a low growl, its presence eerie but strangely comforting. It had always protected them in the shadows, but now, with the threat of the Time Guardians and their unseen machinations, it was a necessity.

They entered.

The building itself was alive, as if it had anticipated their return. Walls twisted, staircases shifted, and the air was heavy with the sensation of something watching. Not long after, they encountered the re-created Time Guardians—those who had fallen by Leegna's hand before. Yet, as the group pressed on, they came to a horrifying realization: the Time Guardians could never truly die. Destroyed, they were simply re-created, even stronger than before. Worse yet, there was now a new master controlling them.

Leegna clenched his fists. How do you fight an enemy that can't stay dead?

But the truth they uncovered was even more startling. The building itself had recognized Yuj's power and cunning, and it was willing to make Yuj its new master, a puppet for its own ends. The very fabric of the structure rejected any being that sought to manipulate time without consequence, and Yuj, for all his schemes, was dangerously close to becoming its prisoner.

"The building is evolving," Unlec whispered in disbelief, watching as the walls pulsed with an otherworldly energy. "It knows you, Leegna. It's learned."

Leegna said nothing but his eyes glinted with a cold resolve. He couldn't afford to lose anyone—not Yuj, not Unlec, not even the Eyeless creature. They ascended higher into the tower, searching for Yuj, knowing full well that time was running out. The Time Guardians, relentless as ever, blocked their way, forcing a brawl unlike any Leegna had ever fought.

But Leegna, no longer the man he once was, didn't hesitate. Power surged through him as his eye turned a dark, vivid blue, his right hand gripping the rapier with unshakable confidence. With every strike, he cut down the Guardians, pushing his team forward.

As they neared the heart of the tower, where Yuj was held, Leegna unleashed his full strength. He summoned the Velvet Shroud, the cloak that could bind the very laws of reality, enveloping him in its ethereal darkness.

But then it happened—a moment that would shake him to his core.

Just as Leegna raised his blade to deliver a final blow, his vision wavered. For the briefest of moments, the world around him shifted. His precognitive power, always reliable, betrayed him. A scene unfolded before his eyes that sent a cold chill down his spine. It wasn't the Time Guardians he saw—it was the Eyeless creature.

No... it can't be...

The Eyeless creature, his silent protector, was not who he thought. Its true identity was revealed in a flash, and the revelation shook him. All this time, the being that had stood by him, fought for him, had been hiding a truth that could change everything. The creature's purpose was far more sinister than even Leegna had suspected.

At the same moment, Yuj's prison began to shimmer, revealing a hidden power that even Leegna hadn't anticipated. Yuj, far from being just a manipulative celestial being, held a power that could unravel everything—his escape would not be the rescue Leegna had hoped for but the unleashing of something far worse.

Leegna froze, his rapier hovering in mid-air, as the implications of what he'd just learned began to sink in. The weight of the moment crushed him.

Before he could process it fully, the Time Guardians encircled him, their cold eyes gleaming with malice. But they didn't attack. Instead, they spoke in unison, their voices ringing through the chamber:

"Your actions have brought you here, Leegna. Now you must face the trial. Your emotions will be your undoing. You cannot fight what you do not understand. The fate of all depends on your next move."

Leegna's mind raced. The truth he had uncovered left him paralyzed. He had grown stronger, smarter, more collected—but nothing could have prepared him for this. His inner conflict swelled as he realized the danger of the road ahead. His every action now carried the weight of not just his own fate, but the fate of everyone. There was no easy answer, no clear path.

And in the midst of his turmoil, he couldn't shake the terrifying thought that he was losing control of the very thing he had fought so hard to protect—his own destiny.
