Chapter 69:
Veil of the Shadow Hunter
The darkened hall echoed with the clash of steel and the roar of battle. Shadows danced in violent motion as Leegna, Unlec, and the eyeless creature fought through the re-created Time Guardians. The air was thick with the eerie hum of their mechanical movements, every step calculated, every strike unforgiving. But Leegna moved with precision, his right eye burning dark blue as he saw through the Guardians' patterns, finding weakness in their defenses.
For once, he didn't feel the usual weight pressing on his shoulders. This time, he wasn't alone. Unlec's shots rang out like thunder as he deftly wielded the gun Yuj had given him. The eyeless creature—silent, swift, and deadly—acted as Leegna's shield, deflecting attacks with unnatural speed. But something about the creature's movements unsettled him, a creeping familiarity he couldn't shake.
Leegna pushed the thought aside, focusing on the battle. A Guardian lunged at him, its form distorting as it tried to crush his mind. But Leegna, calm and collected, met its gaze without flinching. His mind was stronger now, fortified by everything he had endured.
With a flick of his wrist, his rapier cut through the Guardian's ethereal form, sending it crashing into the ground. But before he could catch his breath, another wave of Guardians appeared, closing in. Their strategy had shifted—they were no longer focusing solely on Leegna. Their glowing eyes turned towards Unlec.
In an instant, the fight took a dangerous turn.
Unlec, attempting to dodge the incoming blows, miscalculated his step. His foot slipped on the edge of the crumbling building, and his body lurched backward. The world seemed to slow as he teetered dangerously close to the edge of the tall structure. Leegna's heart pounded in his chest as he saw his ally fall.
With a desperate shout, Leegna lunged, but it was too late. Unlec hit the ground hard, his head striking the concrete with a sickening crack. His body went limp.
For a brief moment, the Guardians hesitated, as if sensing they had gained the upper hand. Leegna's mind raced. The battle was teetering on the edge of chaos, and now Unlec was unconscious, vulnerable to the enemies surrounding him. Rage simmered beneath Leegna's calm exterior, but he didn't let it consume him.
"I won't lose anyone else," Leegna whispered, his eyes narrowing.
He clenched his fists, feeling the familiar surge of power from the pact he had made. The ring on his finger glowed faintly as the energy coursed through him, his eyes deepening to an even darker shade of blue. The rapier in his hand seemed to hum with the same energy, resonating with his newfound resolve.
In a flash, Leegna moved, faster than the Guardians could react. His rapier sliced through their defenses, each strike precise and deliberate. He wasn't just fighting for survival anymore—he was fighting to end this, once and for all. The Guardians, sensing the shift in power, faltered. Leegna saw their weaknesses more clearly than ever before.
As he cut through the last of the Guardians in his path, something inside the eyeless creature caught his attention. The creature, silent and obedient, had taken its place by his side again, shielding him from harm as always. But the way it moved, the way it reacted to him—it was more than just a protective instinct. There was something familiar, something... human.
Leegna froze, his mind racing. Could it be?
Before he could fully process the thought, a voice cut through the chaos.
"It's her."
Leegna turned sharply, his gaze locking onto Yuj, who had materialized in the midst of the battle. The ever-manipulative grin on Yuj's face was gone, replaced by a cold, calculated expression.
"The creature you've been fighting alongside all this time, the one that's protected you at every turn... it's Stina. Or what's left of her."
Leegna's heart dropped. The world around him seemed to stop. Stina—his childhood friend, the one he had lost so many years ago, the one whose death had haunted him, pushing him into this life of vengeance and power. She was... the eyeless creature?
He staggered back, disbelief clouding his mind. "No... that's impossible."
Yuj's voice was like ice, cutting through the confusion. "It was her choice, in a way. When she died, her desire to protect you was so strong that I was able to capture her soul. But not her body—that's long gone. What you see now is a fragment, a shadow of who she once was. She has no memories, no consciousness, but her soul still clings to you."
Leegna's gaze darted to the creature. It stood there, silent as ever, its eyeless face giving no indication of emotion or recognition. But it had been there, through every battle, every struggle, protecting him without question. The revelation hit him like a ton of bricks.
"Why... Why didn't you tell me?" Leegna's voice shook with anger.
"Because you weren't ready," Yuj replied, his voice devoid of sympathy. "You needed her, even if you didn't know it. And now, you have a choice to make. Will you keep fighting, knowing what she is? Or will you let your emotions destroy you?"
The Guardians had regrouped, their presence once again closing in around them. But Leegna barely noticed. His mind was a storm of rage, grief, and confusion. He wanted to lash out at Yuj, to make him pay for what he had done to Stina. But there was no time for that now.
Unlec was still unconscious, and the Guardians were preparing for another assault. Leegna took a deep breath, his cold logic returning. He couldn't afford to lose control—not now. Not when they were so close to rescuing Yuj.
"We need to move," Leegna said, his voice steady despite the turmoil inside him. "Free Yuj, then we end this."
With that, they pressed forward. Leegna's strikes were more precise than ever, his vision sharpened by the dark blue glow of his eye. Unlec, regaining consciousness, joined the fight once more, his gun firing in tandem with Leegna's rapier. The eyeless creature, now revealed to be Stina's soul, continued to fight by Leegna's side, its presence both a comfort and a curse.
As they neared Yuj's prison, the building itself seemed to react, its walls shifting and trembling with the power that lay within. But Leegna wasn't afraid. Not anymore.
With a final strike, they shattered the last of the Guardians blocking their path. Yuj, freed from his restraints, stood before them, a wicked grin returning to his face.
"It's time," Yuj said, his voice filled with dark promise. "I'll show you how to destroy the Time Guardians... once and for all."
The ground beneath them shook violently as the power of the building surged. Leegna's heart pounded in his chest, not just from the battle, but from the weight of the truth he now carried. The conflict within him raged as the next phase of their fight loomed over them—more dangerous than ever, and now with deeper stakes than he could have imagined.
