Chapter 11:
Summer Hyakumonogatari
After finishing the stream, Yuka cleaned up outside and slipped into the tent.
Sayuri followed her in, her eyes shining as she took in the inside of a tent for the first time.
“Sayuri-chan, do you have any paranormal story?”
Yuka looked up at Sayuri, who was floating gently near the ceiling of the tent.
“Hmm… how about a story about Kokkuri-san?”
“If it’s your Kokkuri-san story, it sounds fun! Tell me!”
Sayuri gave a bright little smile, then floated down gently to the floor and began to speak.
“When I sneaked into an elementary school, there happened to be three girls doing Kokkuri-san.
It seemed pretty popular back then, so I’d seen it a few times and kind of knew how it worked.
Well, nothing usually happens.
“Eh? Really? But mine were pretty accurate…”
“Ghosts don’t know all the answers, you know?”
Sayuri replied with a laugh, and Yuka slumped forward with an “Ahhh…”
“And then, while I was watching, I ended up getting seen by them.
And those girls went, ‘Ah! It’s Kokkuri-san!’”
“Wha—!? They spotted you!?”
“I told them I wasn’t, but they just wouldn’t listen, but they just wouldn’t listen.
So, you know… I gave up and decided to just answer whatever.”
Sayuri shrugged and let out a wry smile.
“Eh—can you even do that?”
“I can’t, but… they wouldn’t listen to me at all.
And after answering for a while, they got really excited… and I kind of started having fun too.”
“Talk about being totally into it!”
“But then, all of a sudden, those girls went completely quiet.
They just stared at me with these really serious eyes…”
“Eh—does that mean… they realized it…?”
“…You know, they had ears. Fluffy ones. Kind of like an animal.”
“Eh… that means…”
Yuka swallowed hard.
“Super cute!”
“Right!?”
The two of them lit up with big smiles as their excitement grew.
And like that, their Spoo Talk inside the tent went on until late into the night—
