Chapter 11:

Tending To Tadashi

The Assassin's Code (Volume one)

A small, rattling cough escaped his lips, followed by a fresh trickle of blood. Yumei's heart hammered against her ribs; the sight of the blood reminded her of the hallway and the teacher and student- let's not think about that right now. The urge to flee, to run and hide in the darkest corner of the warehouse, was almost overwhelming.

"Tell me what to do," she said, her voice a strained whisper, betraying the rising panic within her.

"You… won't get it..." he coughed, blood dripping from his mouth.

Even in his weakened state, a hint of his usual cocky attitude remained.

"Be serious!" Yumei says, not finding this funny in the slightest.

'Oh Tadashi... This is what happens when you get into other people's business.' he thought, a wry smile playing on his lips.

Tadashi took an uneasy breath then began to instruct.

She unbuttoned his shirt, revealing a physique far more developed than she would have expected from an eighteen-year-old.
Unnaturally muscular, even for someone who clearly trained rigorously. But that isn't what surprised her.  Around the bullet wound it looked like his skin was peeling.

Then she realized it wasn't skin, it was some sort of cover that looked like skin. She peeled it off and it revealed scars of every kind that covered his chest; burns, whip marks, stab wounds, and bullet holes all now scared over.

What does this guy do to get all those scars? She reached out to his chest going to touch one but she instantly pulled away.

'Focus idiot. It doesn't matter what this guy does in his spare time.' she thinks in her head.

Yumei rolled him onto his stomach with a grunt then looked at the medical kit that he used on her.

"Okay what now?" She asks.

"You need... To clean and stitch it..." He says quietly.

Yumei sighs then she sits him up so she can stitch up his wound. She takes out a little wipe from the medical kit then wipes around it. When she touches the hole with it, his back tensed up and he groaned.

"Sorry..." She whispered.

When she finished cleaning it up, she grabbed the needle and thread.

"How do I stitch?" Yumei asked looking up at him.

He just stayed silent with his eyes closed. Yumei sighs then looks at the medical kit and sees "instructions."

"How convenient." She mumbles to herself.

Once she finished reading it she took a deep breath and began stitching. Her hands were shaking but Tadashi thankfully didn't cry out or anything when she began. Once she finished stitching both sides, she began wrapping the gauze around his mid section. She continues to wrap while trying to keep him sitting up. Yumei's head is below Tadashi's as she wraps him up.

"You... smell like the sun..." Tadashi says quietly. He was sweating and going pale.

She looks up at him, their eyes meet but Tadashi's were getting darker and more blurry by the second.

'I smell like the sun?' Yumei thinks in her head. Then she shakes her head.

"The sun doesn't have a smell idiot." She says looking away from his face.

She didn't know if it was a compliment at all. He's probably making fun of her. That's all he ever does.

Tadashi’s eyes were closing and he was trying to focus. A cloud that was in front of the sun moved, causing the sun to shine down through the open skylight. He doesn't know if it's real, but she looks like she's glowing. He suddenly head bumps her, his eyes now closed.

Yumei's eyes widen and she moves him off her and lays him on the ground. She places her ear against his chest. He had just fallen asleep.
