Chapter 12:

A faded lullaby

The Assassin's Code (Volume one)

Sleep, deep and undisturbed, claimed him. This time, Yumei didn't fear he would slip away. A wave of bone-deep weariness washed over Yumei, her gaze fixed on the sleeping psychopath.

Only God knows who this crazy jock really was. When he wakes, she had questions. A lot. Of. Questions.

She leans against the wall and slides down until she sits.

Silence descended upon the abandoned warehouse, broken only by the occasional howling of the wind.
As Yumei sat there she looked up at the skylight in the roof. The sky was gray and dull- pretty much her life in a nutshell.

But her life before was full of blue skies and fluffy clouds. A world that seemed perfect to a little child.

There was a lullaby her parents often sang, their voices a soothing balm against her childish fears.

“Butterflies in the meadow…

Dancing in the wind…

Bees are buzzing, Birds are chirping singing ‘I love you…’"

“So look up to the skies!

See the birds as they fly above you.

Now close your eyes and dream!”

                              …

Yumei sighs and closes her eyes. She feels a settling peace over her as she hums the song. It was as if her parents were here right now.

She opened her eyes again and looked up at the cloudy sky. For a second she forgot just how cloudy her life was. It wasn't some lovely meadow with butterflies and bees. It was a dark valley of sorrow and death. If she could end it all here and now, she would. She was so sick and tired of this life.
