Chapter 11:
The Zombie Apocalypse Started the Day I Got My First Girlfriend
“You sick bastard, she wasn’t even dating you.” Yuto holds his head with both of his hands, as more blood spills down from his forehead to his chin. His voice was shaky as he spoke. “I will kill you, Minato Akira… I promise you that.”
Minato chuckled, a little low at first, then it became louder, until it echoed in the cafeteria. “Kill me? How? In a few Seconds, you’ll be zombie food. And if by some miracle you crawl out of here, you’ll just bleed out.”He leaned closer, with a wide smile on his face. “And thanks to the good news from that hot little newscaster, Aoi will be on her way to the Tokyo base. Which means, Yuto Sato…” He spread his arms like he’d already won. “…you’ve already lost.”
Minato began to shake his waist, dancing like a madman while muttering under his breath like a lunatic. “Aoi… Aoi… Aoi… God, I can’t wait. She’ll cry for a few hours, sure… but then I’ll be there to console her. Then we’ll have sex and start a family.” His smile widened as he kept shaking his waist on the spot. “How many babies are we gonna have, huh? God, I can’t wait.”He stopped mid-dance and looked back at Yuto and Kaito, bloodlust in his eyes. Then, without any warning, he started hitting his own metal chair leg against the cafeteria gray doors.
(Bang. Bang. Bang.) The sound blasted through the atmosphere like a bullet fired from a sniper rifle. The zombies inside turned their heads around, completely abandoning the TV static noises and roaring in unison.Minato burst out laughing, hitting harder, feeding on the chaos and carnage around him... Then suddenly he stopped, keeping his calmness again, while smiling like a pervert.
Kaito panicked in the moment, rushing forward and grabbing Minato’s waist. “Stop! Please don't do this?!”Minato drove his knee up, smashing into Kaito’s nose; his nostril bone cracked on impact. He staggered backward, holding his face as blood began spilling between his fingers.
In the blink of an eye, Minato shoved the two gray doors closed while sliding his metal chair’s leg through the handles, locking Yuto and Kaito inside, with the horde of zombies now walking toward them.On the other side, Minato started laughing again... slowly, his voice started to fade out.
Yuto let out a very low moan, briefly sucking in enough air, before forcing himself up with his own metal chair leg as a support. His vision was a little shaky, blood continued dripping into his eye, but he could still see Kaito kneeling on the floor, holding his broken nose and sobbing.Then... movement. A very quick blur passed Yuto’s left eye. His gut tightened up instantly. Without thinking, he jumped forward, kicking Kaito with both legs across the cafeteria floor.
A zombie’s claws swiped through the space where Kaito’s head had been a second earlier. Its fingernails destroyed the tile floor before screeching.Yuto raised the metal chair leg with both hands, bracing for an effective strike.
BAM! CRACK!
The metal chair leg smashed into the side of the zombie’s skull... The zombified student staggered back, but sadly didn’t fall down... It attacked harder, clawing at him, its nails tearing across his long sleeve... Yuto bit his lips and swung again, harder, this time smashing it down on its forehead. The skull cracked into two, and the zombie dropped at his feet, twitching twice before going completely still.
Yuto staggered back, his chest and breathing became heavy, sweat and blood mixing on his face as he tried to clean it off... He nearly fell to one knee but forced himself upright.More groans and roars echoed all around the cafeteria. Ten more zombies were dragging themselves forward, stepping over the pile of bodies on the ground.
Yuto raised the metal chair leg; his knuckles were red and bruised up.“Come on,” he muttered, his eyes was still blurry, partly from his injury and some from the blood covering his face. “I’m not dying here.”His arms started trembling 'cause he was losing blood. Even so, he braced himself...Another zombie...One out of the ten zombies rushed forward again.
Yuto swung fast, slamming the metal chair leg into its jaw... Teeth flew out in all directions, but it didn’t stop moving... It slammed Yuto hard, forcing him back against the cafeteria's countertop. The stench of rot filled his nose as the zombie’s mouth snapped inches from his throat.“Fuck!” Yuto shouted out loud, hitting the metal chair leg upward... The tip tore through the chin of the zombie and out the back of its head. The body twitched twice before collapsing on top of him.
Yuto quickly shoved it aside while gasping for air... His ribcage burned intensely as more blood pressure was applied to the injured part...
Deep down, he knew that there was no scenario where he could overpower all the zombies. This wasn’t a game, and it wasn’t a manga either. If he just swung his weapon blindly, he’d die here. If he hesitated for a minute, he’d die here. The only chance was to think, calculatively, quicker than the zombies closing in on him. His eyes moved from left to right around the cafeteria, scanning every corner. Then it hit him… the storage unit. They had already been inside. It had one door, very heavy and solid. If they could get back there again, maybe… just maybe, he and Kaito could lock themselves in for a while.Yuto turned quickly, toward the side of the counter where Kaito was crouched down, holding his broken nose.
"Kaito!" Yuto yelled out loud, with all his strength ... "Storage room, NOW!"Kaito flinched, raising his head, his red eyes widened as soon as he heard Yuto's voice. “W-what?”
“The storage! Move there now, it’s our only chance of survival!"Yuto quickly grabbed his metal chair leg from the bloody tile floor and ran forward, creating as much space as he could between them and the pack of zombies.
He took a massive swing at the next zombie running at them... smashing its head halfway but not stopping to finish it off. Every second mattered... “Run!” he shouted...Kaito stumbled up, his legs were very wobbly, but he still managed to push himself toward the storage unit door.
