Chapter 12:
The Zombie Apocalypse Started the Day I Got My First Girlfriend
Yet midway through the cafeteria, Kaito tripped over a zombie's dead body and slammed his face-first onto the ground. His glasses shattered beside him, broken pieces scattering across the cafeteria tiles.
“Kaito!” Yuto’s chest tightened as he watched it all unfold in seconds.Yuto ran forward, instantly carrying Kaito up by the arms and throwing him over his shoulder. But before he could take a step back, Kaito screamed out loudly.
Yuto turned his head around and froze up... one of the zombies he had thrown his metal chair leg at had bitten its teeth deep in Kaito’s leg.“Shit!” Yuto cursed out loud, and with one quick and violent kick, he smashed his heel into the zombie’s skull. Its bone cracked open, and rotten brain particles burst out in all directions. The body went completely limp, and its jaws finally let go.
He didn’t even stop to check the wound on Kaito's leg... He carried Kaito straight into the storage unit and slammed the door shut, before dropping him on the floor... Excessive pain vibrated throughout his arms as he went and started pushing the bulky fridge from the corner, dragging it across the floor...The bottom of the fridge scraped loudly on the floor, yet Yuto kept pushing harder until it got slammed into place against the door...Yuto dropped to his knees, his chest beating fast, his face covered in blood and sweat.
He now turned his head to the side and saw Kaito lying on the floor... His leg was torn open, and his blood was pouring out, a very sickening amount spreading across the floor...Their eyes met, and Kaito forced a smile, a desperate attempt to appear calm.
But Yuto knew it was all an act. He saw the terror in Kaito’s eyes, the deep sadness and a quiet acceptance of his fate... Deep down, he knew Kaito was already gone, lost to the despair that surrounded them.Yuto started counting down inside his head... He’d seen it before with his roommates, Kuro and Kenji...ten agonizing and quick seconds until they turned into zombies.

Kaito’s trembling hand fumbled in his pocket, pulling out a small, worn-out photo. It was a girl who looked no older than eighteen; her smile was bright and innocent, the complete opposite of the emotion they were currently feeling.(Two)
“I was going to find her, my younger sister, if we made it out of here alive,” he spoke out, looking at Yuto with teary eyes. He in took a rough breath. “But now... I don’t think that’s going to happen.” He let out a single, depressed laugh that held no humor, only grief and pain.
Yuto tried to speak, but Kaito cut him off. “Don’t,” he pleaded, still smiling. “It’s okay. You don’t have to console me. I know my time is up. I’m going to turn into one of them.”(Three)
Tears spilled from his eyes, tracing clean lines through the dirt and dried blood on his face. “Mom, Dad... I’m sorry,” Kaito cried out loud, his whole body was shaking. “I’m so, so sorry I couldn’t protect Mika.”He started coughing rapidly blood splattered onto the floor from his mouth... Yuto moved back on reflex; his body was on high alert, counting silently internally, as he looked at Kaito.
“Yuto, please,” Kaito begged, his voice rough and edgy. “I need you to grant me two wishes. Please... so I can rest in peace.”

Yuto swallowed and nodded in agreement, but deep down it held a heavy weight on him emotionally... (Six)Yuto's own eyes suddenly became blurry from unshed tears as he took the photo, a blood promise passing between them...
“What’s the second wish?” Yuto asked with his strained voice that was barely audible over the relentless kicking and punching of zombies on the storage unit door. (Seven)Kaito looked up, facing the ceiling, tears pouring down his cheeks. “Kill me,” he whispered, the words left his throat in an instant... “Please, Yuto. I don’t want to become one of them.”
A long, and excruciating sigh escaped Yuto's lips, a gesture of profound grief and acceptance. “Fine,” he finally said. This single word stood as a promise and a farewell. He picked up a broken piece of glass, and then moved quietly behind Kaito, his hands were trembling as he raised the glass... Kaito then looked up at him one last time, a tearful smile on his face. “Thank you, Yuto, for everything.” he breathed out, his final words.
Yuto quietly stood up; his clothes were completely soaked in blood of his comrade and friend... He instantly fell to his knees... A gut-wrenching scream came out of his throat and lungs.
“Ahhhh!”The tears he had been holding back finally came now, a flood of grief that completely blurred his vision... He cried out loud, but his voice was swallowed by the drumming of zombies on the storage-unit door... His tears were dripping and mixing with the blood on his hands.
He nonchalantly lowered his head, resting his forehead against the blood-soaked floor. The stench of blood filled his nostrils and lungs, sticky and heavy, but he didn’t move... He couldn’t...The image of Kaito’s last smile was burned into his mind... tearful, grateful, yet drenched in tragedy and pain... It replayed again and again, each time stabbing deeper, until Yuto thought he might break apart entirely.
He had done what was asked of him. He had granted his friend peace... That was supposed to be the right thing. So why did it feel like murder?
His chest rose up and fell down in shallow and painful gasps, his hands trembling violently and intensely. The blood wasn’t just on his clothes or his skin anymore… it was inside him, clinging to his soul.Could he still call himself human?
This question echoed mercilessly in his mind...
