Chapter 54:
Two in the Abandoned House
When Yuka suddenly looked over at the two ghosts, Sayuri seemed to be asleep while clinging to Shinobu, but her legs were floating softly in the air.
“Why is she floating while sleeping? Last time, she was sleeping while sitting, right?”
What Yuka had wanted to ask was, “Do ghosts get drunk?” but this came out of her mouth first.
“Well, I think that normally she goes to sleep after thinking, ‘I’m going to sleep.’ But right now, she got drunk and just fell asleep like that… maybe.”
Shinobu answered as she gently stroked Sayuri’s head.
“So that’s how it works?”
Yuka tilted her head.
“At least, that’s how it is for Sayuri-chan and me. If we think, ‘I’m going to sit on a chair,’ we can sit, but if we’re not consciously doing it, we pass right through.”
“Ah—yeah, I think I heard something like that before… maybe?”
Yuka’s gaze wandered as she tried to remember, but then, as if it came back to her, she looked at Shinobu.
“…Oh, right! Hey, so—do ghosts get drunk even when they haven’t been drinking alcohol?”
“You didn’t get drunk before, did you?”
Misaki cut in as she recalled the time when she had moved in.
“That’s true… This time, the aroma and the color were unusual, so maybe she just convinced herself that she was ‘drunk’…”
“Huh, I see. So that’s how it is. …Oh—wait, then maybe, Misaki-san, you’re just convincing yourself that you don’t get drunk too? Are you actually a ghost?”
Yuka turned a surprised look toward Misaki.
“I told you I’m alive. If I were dead, I wouldn’t be able to drink alcohol, right?”
She demonstrated by taking a gulp.
“I see! Then you’ve gotta drink a lot!”
Yuka held up an isshōbin with a bright expression.
“Sake is best enjoyed in moderation.”
She smiled gently and held out her now-empty glass to Yuka.
