Chapter 16:

The Blink of Darkness

Bio-Mage

Kay and Getsurin were next to see the horror that transpired within the walls of this hotel. An absolute slaughter house took place. Bodies stacked on top of one another, guts and organs decorated every corner of the open ninth floor, while blood creatively painted the walls and ceiling. Wary to even open the door to avoid the potential wretched odor that the corpses and flies were likely fermenting. They could only gasp at the terror that something has the ability to do this.

“What? What is it?!” Zuina asked with angst over the radio.

“A reason to leave.” Yuuichirou mentioned.

“Yeah, Zuina, it's a good thing you weren’t here to see what we saw, we'll be right down.” Kay remarked with disbelief and hilarity.

Gladly wasting no time, they rushed downward to leave this awful place. Leading the way down stairs, Moku suddenly paused his movements, with his rifle aimed at something. His eyes sharp with fear and the readiness to fight.

Each couldn’t utter a word. As the Bio Mage has moved from the seventh floor into the stairway, clear in its sights, looking at the team. The creature slowly shifted its body towards them; they noticed that it was walking down the stairs as they encountered it by the fifth floor, not the seventh where it was stationed.

“What should we do?” Kay understandably asked.

“We might have to make a risky escape.” Moku simply stated, seeing that this Bio Mage has power. Potentially more power than the four of them combined.

Before they knew it, the creature backed them into the seventh floor once again. Seemingly showing some coherence in the notion that the four are exactly where the Bio Mage wanted them to be. As it got closer to them, they slowly fanned outward, somewhat circling the creature. However, its unspoken objective became obvious: It wants Getsurin’s eye.

“Everyone, it seems to be pretty focused on me, you should run while you have the chance.” Getsurin suggested with a calm urgency.

“Are you crazy! We can’t leave you here with that thing!” Kay was first to object to the ridiculous plan.

“He’s right, but we’ll be close by.” Moku agreed with a slight alteration. “We’ll be at the stairway door, once we’re there, you haul ass and we can give you cover fire if we need to.” He then instructed.

Still maintaining the extreme caution, Getsurin walked backwards as the Bio Mage’s arm, hideous in design, held upward towards Getsurin’s eye. Failing to understand that Getsurin is moving as it gets closer to him. The others made their way to the stairway, Getsurin glanced at his immediate area for a fast escape route.

“Okay, Getsurin!” Yuuichirou hollered quietly, while trying to signal that he heard him.

The eyes of this Bio Mage almost shined like a dark mirror. Getsurin’s able to see his own reflection, able to see the deformed shapes that have overtaken his own Bio Mage eye. Plotting in his panicked mind, Getsurin pondered hopeful ideas that his eye would develop something that will get everyone out safely, unfortunately, he had only one good option for an escape.

Getsurin found a tall stack of papers and folders to quickly throw them in the air to cover, betting the creature would get distracted. Just in that moment, Getsurin ran as fast as he could away from the Bio Mage, instantly able to see the others: Moku and Yuuichirou with their guns ready aimed at the creature, except for Kay who only had the singular sight of fear in her eyes.

“Getsurin!” Kay screamed. Getsurin had little time to react, all he could manage was a small glance behind him.

In his sights was the Bio Mage, almost hovering above him, it leaped over 12 meters to Getsurin, and with its barbaric arm slammed Getsurin into the ground. Forcing him to cough blood from his mouth. Moku instinctively fired his rifle, deafening the once still air with the harsh explosion of bullets. Yuuichirou did the same with his pistol but the bullets were unable to even form a scratch on the powerful monster, as if they were throwing baseballs at a wet blanket. The bullets calmly impact the monster, for them to silently fall off its flesh.

The creature then grabbed hold of Getsurin’s bloodied head, trying to break free, he could only latch on the creature's hand. The others were already running out of options to fight off the seemingly unstoppable thing, simply reloading their firearms as fastly as they could.

Kay’s eyes were becoming darker and darker as her horror grew, her pupils almost taking over the entirety of her eyes. One of her pillars of personal strength was beginning to fade into that forever abyss before her very eyes. What was she to do when her team is equally helpless? The sweat started to feel like tears.

The creature lifted Getsurin by the head higher to then place its other hand over Getsurin’s eye. But suddenly its hand moved away from Getsurin’s face. Kay ran as fast as she could to snatch away the creature's hand before it harmed Getsurin.

“Come on!” Kay shouted. “We need to fight like monsters!” She rallied.

Yuuichirou’s body moved all on its own, perfectly understanding that this is the time! He charged and with his right arm materializing into a dense metal. The colors of his arm shined like silver with harsh reds and brilliant bronzes. Creating a fist: Yuuichirou gave every ounce of strength upward directly into the creature’s jaw. Forcing a shockwave to echo to each corner of the floor.

The creature immediately stuttered backwards as it soon found its balance, still standing as if nothing even struck it, but the important part is that it released Getsurin. The four swiftly regrouped with Getsurin behind them, regaining his energy. The creature just stared at the four, like it had a plan forming. Doing so in complete silence, not uttering a single sound or cry of pain, even after Yuuichirou’s power punch, it just remained silent.

“I hate to ask this, now, but I think we’re under prepared.” Moku mentioned, joking at the absurdity of this situation.

“We just have to do our damndest to get the hell out of this building.” Yuuichirou remarked.

“Hey! It's doing something!” Kay shouted.

The creature’s jaw extended downward, as if the joints were malleable, for a dim but clear blue light to focus in the center of its now widened maw. The dim light quickly became brighter and grew quickly. Getting nearly as large as its head and instantly collapsed into a dense blue sphere of light.

“MOVE!!!”

If the creature didn’t take so long to create that sphere of light, the team would have been annihilated. The creature shot that light into a destructive ray of unthinkable power. The team jumped in every direction to avoid the blast, as it traveled unimpeded into the wall behind them, carving a clear hole, even continuing further after for several kilometers before finally dissipating.

“What the hell was that?! You didn’t say anything about Fucking Lasers!” Moku screamed with obvious confusion and frustration.

“Don’t get pissy with us! It's not like we know everything about these weird ass things!” Getsurin suddenly gained the energy to defend the ignorance of the apparent laser beams.

“Stop shouting! We need a plan and fast before the thing does it again!” Kay screamed.

“Then you think of something!” Moku retaliated.

“She already did.” Said Yuuichirou for them to look at him. “We have to fight like monsters.”
