Chapter 6: What is going on?

Sayuri rose high on the night breeze, drifting gently as she floated.

Had the common sense of the world changed without her knowing it?
She felt like she had heard such a story somewhere before.

Judging from the exchange between that man and the boy’s parents, it seemed the boy was being treated as if he had done something rude.
But to Sayuri’s eyes, there was not the slightest sign of that.
If anything, the boy had been polite—he had even greeted her as they passed each other.

—Could it be that the man had given the parents a false account?

Could they really accept the words of the man who killed their child so completely?
To bow their heads over and over without even a trace of doubt—there was no way that was normal.

—Was that man a figure of power in this village?

If he were someone with enough power to justify killing a person, he wouldn’t bother carrying the body himself.
With that kind of power, he would have someone else transport it—or even order someone else to take the blame.

“…Ugh, seriously! None of this makes any sense!”

The voice that burst out escaped her before she could stop it, and reached no one—swallowed up by the darkness of the night.
