Chapter 8:
SUZUKIMU - No Moon Can Shine Without Its Sun
October 5th – Kimura Mirai (Sophia Part 2)
I looked around the house and nothing much seemed to have changed. Some different artwork on the walls and maybe a different armchair, that was about it. Time really seemed to stand still in this place. Sophia asked me to sit down at the dinner table and I did so. Only after I sat down I realized that I had chosen the same chair I had always used back in the day and the realization didn't fail to leave its mark on me. Sophia also seemed to notice that I used the same chair as back then.
“It's amazing that you didn't forget where you used to sit down all these years ago,” she said.
“I didn't even think about it. My body moved on it's own,” I answered. Sophia left it at that.
I watched her do something in the kitchen for a while and finally she put a cup of tea in front of me. She didn't need to ask the way I liked it.
“So who is Suzuki?” I started the conversation. Sophia sighed. What was that about now?
“You know Yutos sister, right?” She asked. Of course I did. She sat at the table with us a lot back in the day.
“Of course, what does she have to do with it?”
“Well, she was a couple of years older than Yuto and You and four years after the faithful day she had a child. That child is Suzuki.” I couldn't believe what I had just heard. How was this possible?
“But he looks exactly like Yuto, doesn't he,” I said, still trying to process what Sophia just said.
“Oh yes, but the genes of the male moons are very strong. They all end up looking the same.”
What a casual way to put it.
“Doesn't your daughter also look exactly like you when you were her age?” Sophia continued.
“The genes of the female suns work the same way.”
Kiyomi did indeed almost like a clone of me, to the point where people who knew me when I was young couldn't stop pointing it out. But I never had thought much of it.
“And why did he appear at my daughters school and at my door step?”
“By now you must have realized Alte Kälte is coming back,” Sophia answered. I thought about whether I should tell her about what had happened at the school and I decided it was too important to keep it hidden.
“Yes, I know about it. My daughter and Suzuki thought an Eiswind at their school.” Now Sophia seemed surprised for the first time today.
“Really? How did it go?” She asked.
“They beat it, but they couldn't control their Mana and both collapsed after the fight. But they are alright now.”
“I'm happy to hear that. Then you must now why Suzuki appeared. Moons can sense the cold coming and hence he knew he needed to take action. But what now? What do you want to do?”
I was hesitating again. But I had to tell her everything.
“I want to train them. It seems they have enormous potential together, but they have to be able to control their Mana or it's all worthless.” I was waiting to see her reaction. She trained me and Yuto back in the day and maybe she would think I wasn't up for the task.
“'I think it's a good idea. You actually did it back in the day. The fighting I mean. So you know exactly what's on the line.” Sophia answered after a while.
“Thanks for saying that Sophia. I wasn't sure I was up for it, but hearing that gives me confidence.”
Sophia smiled at me and it did have the same effect on me as it had back then. When I saw her smile I thought I could do anything.
“I think I should go now,” I said. Suddenly I had the urge to leave this place as soon as possible. I felt like if I stayed I would get to know something I really shouldn't.
“Mirai?” Sophia suddenly asked. There it was. I was feeling goosebumps all over my body. I was trying to leave the table but I could only Manage to stand up before she continued.
“You know why it happened now, right? Why he had to die?” I closed my eyes as a wave of pain washed over me. What was she trying to say? Was she blaming us for being in love with each other?
“You told me being in love messes with our abilities,” I said. That's the only thing she ever said on the matter. Sophia was slowly shaking her head, her face filled with regret.
“I know that's what I told you. But it's not right. I was hoping you would figure it out own your own, but I will tell you if you want to.” I swallowed hard and started to shake. What on earth did she mean?
“No, I don't think I want to know.” Suddenly I regained my ability to walk and I ran away from the table and out of the house. The fear of the truth had gripped me and I felt like my whole world would be falling apart if I heard it now. When I was home again I went to bed straight away, but I was awake until the morning, thinking about what Sophia might have alluded to.
