Chapter 2:

Twist

"A dragon?" Ramon said towards his cellphone.
     "Yes." Percy replied.
Ramon drove his truck along the highway nonchalantly.
     "You're kidding me."
"I'm not. There have been reports of a dragon ravaging the outskirts of Tokyo city; obviously, this is the work of a Twister."
Ramon instinctively reached for the revolver strapped to his hip.
"I don't think I have big enough bullets for that."
"Of course you don't; you're expected to find and subdue her without fighting the dragon. Besides, the dragon has only been spotted once; this likely means that she's only just begun utilizing her powers in a destructive manner."
The Twisthunter's eyes lit up with sudden hope.
"Wait; maybe, I could convince her to get the surgery."
"Don't raise your hopes too much Ramon; do you recall the incident in Nova Scotia?"
Ramon's eyes narrowed. He grit his teeth.
     "Shut up, Percy."
"Right; that was rather rude of me. I apologize." Percy hesitated for a moment. "Regardless, you must find and subdue the Twister before she causes more significant damage to Tokyo. I'll send you the location of where the dragon attacked once this conversation is over, as well as the only video footage we have of the attack. Is there anything else you need to know?"
"You'll text me my airplane tickets too, yeah?"
     "Of course."
     "Hotels?"
"Ramon, you do comprehend that you could simply flash your Twisthunter badge in any hotel and immediately receive a room, don't you?" Percy said, and it was clear he'd said the same thing several times before.
"I don't like doing that. Nobody likes it when the government steps in and decides to mess with how things work. I don't want to do that any more than I absolutely have to in order to catch this Twister."
"That would be noble if it weren't so bothersome for me." Percy complained. "Yes, your hotel in Tokyo has been booked. Is there anything else?"
"I'll call you if there is."
"You can't call this number again, remember? This is a dummy number."
     Ramon cursed under his breath.
"When will you call me again?"
"I will call you when you reach Tokyo, and then I will give you the real number to reach me at once the job is completed."
"I get you." He looked up and saw one of the green highway signs showing that Houston was only eighty miles away. "Talk to you later Percy."
"Of course; have a safe trip."
Ramon tapped his cellphone and hung up on Percy.
The drive to Houston was dead silent after that.
He made it to the airport with a serious look on his face. Some people stared at his getup, but nobody commented on it verbally.
The series of flights was boring, and he slept through most of it, not bothering to watch the video footage Percy had sent him.
In his dreams, the faces of several young women passed him by; all of them had been completely lost to their powers, and his elimination of them had been a good and necessary thing, but every time he thought about it, his head hurt.
If people listened to the warnings; if they stopped trying to make it work; if they accepted that certain things were immutable facts, then his job wouldn't exist. There wouldn't be any Twisters, and there wouldn't be any Twisthunters, and the world would be better off for it.
Once his plane landed, he wandered through the airport grimly. He could feel the tension in the air; despite how much people tried to hide it, they were scared of what had happened. Ramon considered it admirable that the Japanese people as a whole were trying to remain calm. He took the monorail, and when he was finally able to leave the sprawling airport, he immediately went to the hotel Percy had prepared for him.
He stood out like a sore thumb in the streets of Japan. He didn't care. He knew that the Twister could be anywhere, and so he had to act like it was everywhere.
The hotel didn't take him long to reach. Once he made it, he spoke to the receptionist in Japanese, explaining that he had reserved a room ahead of time. She nodded and let him in. He thanked her. Once he was in the elevator, he realized he'd forgotten to watch Percy's video. He pulled it up while still waiting to reach his floor.
What he saw made his eyes widen.
The footage had been taken from a helicopter, and it depicted the Tokyo skyline in the early morning. The Tokyo Skytree towered over the city and was the central focus of the video. Or rather, the dragon curled around the tower was the focus.
It was gargantuan and black, with a long serpentine body that had hair along its spine. It had only four legs, two near its front and two near its rear. Its body wrapped around the Tokyo Skytree five times; its sleek black scales made it seem like there was a hole in reality wherever it was. The reporter commenting on the situation was obviously doing his best to remain calm, but his voice was showing signs of cracking under pressure.
Throughout the video, the dragon didn't do much more than coil around the Tokyo Skytree and look out over the rest of the city in near silence. It didn't even roar. The video continued monitoring the dragon for almost twenty minutes, before the dragon suddenly vanished. Ramon rewound the video several times to see if he had missed anything, but he hadn't. One moment, the black dragon was curled around the Tokyo Skytree; the next, the only sign left of its existence was the damage that had been done to the building.
When he made it to his hotel room, his phone was already back in his pocket. He sighed and threw his satchel onto his bed, before absently looking through his hunting supplies. He had silver bullets, silvered knives, lockpicks, camping supplies, rations, and more but he knew that none of it would be very helpful during the job.
His phone rang as he slowly picked through his supplies unenthusiastically. He answered it.
     "Hello Percy."
"Ramon. I was only calling to make sure that you arrived safely. Are there any questions you need to ask me about the job?"
"What the heck am i supposed to do?" Ramon said despondently into his cellphone. "A Twister with that kind of power needs a little more than 'a few bullets;' which just happens to be my one and only specialty."
"Ramon, you're a rank one Twisthunter for a reason. If anyone has a chance of finding this Twister before she strikes again, you do."
"Dang it Percy, you know that's not what I'm getting at!" Ramon groaned as he held the phone next to his head. "It's easier when they're using their powers; killing them when they're sleeping or standing there unarmed is..." Ramon couldn't finish the sentence.
The only sound in the apartment was the gentle hum of the air conditioner.
     "I can't do it."
"You have to." Percy said slowly. "Forget about the UN for a moment; just remember all the people who can and will be hurt if this Twister continues to roam Tokyo unimpeded. Think about the mental deterioration that poor woman must be suffering as her own powers eat her alive. Think about her family, who right now is probably regretting everything they've done that led up to this moment." Percy's voice was calm. "This is not about whether or not you can do the job, Ramon, because you and I both know someone has to do this."
Ramon sat on the edge of his bed and looked at his revolver. Sometimes he wanted to taste its barrel.
He grit his teeth and breathed deeply.
"Our father, who art in heaven..."
Ramon uttered the same prayer he'd used every single time before a job. Percy stayed quiet. When Ramon was done, he shook his head and wiped away the wetness from his eyes.
"Alright." He laid down on his bed. "I'm ready. Don't forget to send me the number to reach you when I'm done."
"Of course not. Good luck, Ramon."
     "Thanks Percival."
     The call ended.
Ramon looked at his revolver again. One day, he was going to put it away forever, but until then, he had some long, hard work ahead of him.
