Chapter 50:

Marie (Part V)

Skyliner or 1954

It was Monday. While listening to one of my favorite afternoon radio programs, BLUES FOR MONDAY, I decided to take a bath, because I still had a lot of time before I had to go to training.

When I was already in the tub, Marika appeared and, wanting to give me a warm surprise, jumped in after me. We played delightfully for some time, until at a certain moment, with her shapely foot, toenails painted red, she carelessly and as if a little too strongly leaned into the Pompeian wall. What happened next is difficult even to imagine.

A large portion of the wall together with pieces of the antique tiles, pieces of brick and other rubble fell inside. There was so much of the shit that the water flowed over the tub’s edge.

We jumped out as if burned, leaving the tub full of suspicious-looking liquid in the color of mother Earth. Marika, who was going to accompany me to training and then spend the rest of the evening with me out on the town, decided instead to stay and do something with this, and when less than three hours later I approached my house with groceries, from a distance already I noticed on the sidewalk a large pile of rubble, in which without trouble I recognized fragments of my Pompeian tiles.

In my absence, Marika cleaned things up, bucket by bucket diligently removing all the rubble to the street, so that the bathtub was like new, only the walls left a lot to be desired. She was a wildly good girl and tried her best.

The next day I decided to work, even more because again I got some money, a portion of which I set aside for the repair of this unlucky wall.

When it comes to those times, and the country of those times, no tile store existed as such, but two days earlier I had seen a few workers taking apart some larger bombarded home, and in the hope of finding seventy something needed tiles I decided to make my way there.
