Chapter 2:
Dark Fables of Void V2 — Quantum Mix
Zarlivius, meanwhile, went straight to Nurse Kim Yumi's office. He HAD to get to the bottom of this. Alice was able to take down his 'impenetrable' ice barrier like it was nothing, all thanks to her Miracle Eyes. Yumi is well-versed in the Miracle Eyes and Zarlivius wants—NEEDS—insight on this wonderful asset…
Yumi looks up from her paperwork as Zarlivius barges into her office. She raises an eyebrow, mildly annoyed at his lack of manners.
"Yes, Zarlivius? What is it?" she asks, her voice cool and composed.
Zarlivius slams his hands on the table, a desperate look on his face. "Miss Kim, I need to know everything you know about Miracle Eyes."
Yumi arches an eyebrow, surprised by his sudden outburst. "Miracle Eyes, hmm? That's a rare talent. Why do you want to know about it all of a sudden?”
Zarlivius leans in closer to Yumi, his expression serious. "There was this newbie in the tournament today...her name was Alice. She has Miracle Eyes and she broke through my barrier like it was nothing."
Yumi's eyes widened in surprise, her interest piqued. "A newbie with Miracle Eyes, you say? That's quite rare...and quite powerful. Are you telling me she bested you?”
Zarlivius grits his teeth, frustration etched on his face. "More like she annihilated me. She broke through my 'impenetrable' barrier like it was nothing. And she used gamma ray, which is supposed to be invisible to the naked eye without special equipment. It's like she has this uncanny ability to see the entire electromagnetic spectrum. It's infuriating.”
Yumi listens carefully, her expression thoughtful. "So this Alice...she indeed possesses the Miracle Eyes. She's therefore able to perceive the full EM spectrum, from gamma rays to radio waves.”
Zarlivius nods, his frustration still evident. "Yes, that's exactly it. It's like she has this sixth sense that allows her to see things that others can't even imagine exist. How is that even possible?!”
Yumi shrugs, her expression thoughtful. "It's difficult to say. Miracle Eyes are still poorly understood. All we know for sure is that they're incredibly rare and incredibly powerful. But as for the specifics of how they work and what exactly they can perceive...that information is still largely unknown. I'm still experimenting with the idea, and am working on a serum that can give one the ability to perceive the entire EM spectrum at once—"
"Give it to me," Zarlivius interrupted, his elven ears perked in attention.
Yumi raises an eyebrow, mildly amused by his eagerness. "And why exactly would I give you something that I'm still testing? It's not even perfected yet.”
Zarlivius leans even closer to Yumi, his voice almost a whisper. "I need that serum. I won't lose to that nobody with those Miracle Eyes ever again. She humiliated me in front of the whole crowd and I can't allow myself to live with this feeling of embarrassment."
Yumi looks at Zarlivius for a moment, studying his expression. Then she lets out a small sigh. "You're acting like a child, you know that right?”
Zarlivius scowls, his pride still stung. "I'm not a child. I just refuse to be bested by some newbie with freak skills. I'm supposed to be unstoppable, undefeated. And that...brat ruined it all. I need that serum.”
Yumi narrows her eyes. "You're letting your arrogance and wounded pride get the better of you. Do you even understand the risks associated with this serum? It's an experimental drug, still in the testing phase. I have no idea what kind of effects it will have on an elf like you.”
Zarlivius scoffs, still determined to have the serum. "I don't care about the risks, we elves are very resilient. I'll take whatever side effects there are just to defeat her. I need this, Miss Kim. I won't lose again. Not to Alice.”
Yumi sighs again, shaking her head. "You're stubborn as always, Zarlivius. But fine, I'll give you the serum. However, I must warn you, the side effects of this drug are still very much unknown. You could suffer long-term or permanent side effects. Are you sure you're willing to risk that just to defeat this newcomer?”
Zarlivius nods, determination etched on his face. "Yes. I don't care about the risks. I'll endure whatever side effects there are if it means I can beat her and restore my reputation. Just give me that damn serum.”
Yumi gives a small shake of her head, her expression resigned. "Fine, I'll give you the serum. But don't come crawling back to me if you go insane because of the side effects. I did warn you, you know."
Yumi pulls out a syringe from her side pocket. It contained a multicolored liquid that glowed like a miniature moon. She took the syringe and pressed the tip against Zarlivius's shoulder.
Zarlivius' face twisted in a mixture of anticipation and trepidation. He closed his eyes, bracing himself for whatever effects the serum will have on him.
Yumi injected the multicolored liquid into Zarlivius' shoulder. As the serum entered his body, a strange feeling washed over him. His limbs suddenly felt...different. His vision then faded, regressing to only being able to see the color green in the visible light spectrum.
"You're going to gradually become vulnerable to the entire electromagnetic spectrum, starting from visible light," Yumi explained, carefully watching over Zarlivius. That was when red light began to kick in for him, slowly spreading into violet too.
Zarlivius gasped as his vision shifted. His senses felt like they were on fire, each new color adding a new dimension to his perception. The world suddenly became almost in full color, signifying that visible light was almost fully perceptible to him now.
Yumi observed him closely, noticing the discomfort on his face. "How do you feel?" she asked, her eyes sharp with concentration. "You should soon be able to see ultraviolet light, according to my calculations.”
Zarlivius nodded, his body still adjusting to the new sensations. "I...I feel strange...like my senses are on overdrive. Everything is so...bright," he managed to say, his voice slightly strained.
As if on cue, Zarlivius' vision shifted again, and ultraviolet light became perceptible to him. He winced at the intensity of the light, his eyes tearing up a little. He could see how Yumi's tonic water looked in ultraviolet light, which had a glow to it that he couldn't see when restricted to the visible light spectrum. "God, it's so bright...even your water looks different now…”
Yumi nodded, making mental notes of Zarlivius' reactions. "Yes, ultraviolet light tends to be much brighter than visible light," she explained, her voice calm and cool. "You'll likely experience some sensory overload at first. But don't worry, your eyes should adjust over time."
She paused for a moment, considering her next words carefully. "There is one thing I need to warn you about, however…”
Zarlivius looked at her, his eyes still slightly tear-filled. "What is it? What else should I know about this serum?" he asked, his tone more cautious now.
Yumi's expression turned slightly serious. "The side effects of this serum are not always pleasant or predictable," she warned. "As you're gradually able to perceive the entire electromagnetic spectrum, you may start to feel a range of side effects—migraines, sensory overload, extreme sensitivity, and even hallucinations."
Almost as if on cue, Zarlivius's vision began to adopt infrared next. Now he's starting to see the temperature of everything around him.
Zarlivius' face twisted in discomfort as the infrared spectrum kicked in, causing him pain and headache. "Oh god, my head..." he groaned, his hands instinctively reaching to cradle it.
Yumi, however, seemed unsurprised by this reaction. "Yes, migraines and headaches are common side effects," she said calmly. "But they should subside eventually. Your eyes and brain are just getting used to perceiving a wider range of light waves."
"You're...glowing," Zarlivius noted.
Yumi raised an eyebrow at Zarlivius' observation. "Glowing?" she repeated, her curiosity piqued.
Zarlivius nodded, his eyes still strained from the pain. "Yeah, I can see your body heat now. You're glowing with infrared light."
A small smile tugged at the corner of Yumi's mouth. She had expected some side effects, but this was quite an unexpected one. "Interesting... You can now perceive infrared light, just as I predicted. Are you able to see microwaves yet?"
Sure thing, the microwave spectrum kicked in next.
Zarlivius groaned again as the microwave spectrum kicked in, causing his headache to worsen. "Microwaves now...my head is going to explode..."
Yumi, unbothered, nodded. "Yes, the headache will definitely get worse before it gets better. But you're doing well. With microwaves, the night sky would never look pitch black since you'll be able to see the cosmic microwave background. Anyways, soon, you'll be able to perceive radio waves as well."
"And that's the worst of it, right?" Zarlivius grunted through the pain, sweat beginning to gather on his forehead.
Yumi shook her head. "No, I'm afraid not. The worst is yet to come."
Zarlivius groaned in frustration, clearly not appreciating her answer. "What could possibly be worse than this?" he demanded, wincing.
His own question was answered by the radio wave spectrum coming in next. He could see the colorful radio waves and the building's Wi-Fi flowing through the walls like a fishing net waving gracefully on calm waters.
Zarlivius' pain intensified as he struggled to cope with the additional spectrum. "Damn it...my head feels like it's splitting in half," he hissed, his hands pressing against his temples.
Yumi, still cool and composed, took out a notebook and jot down some notes. "That's to be expected. Your brain is receiving far too much information at once. It's a lot to process. It will hurt like hell, but it will pass, I promise."
"Impossible..." Zarlivius muttered, still observing how the radio waves and Wi-Fi covered everything around him in vibrant, fluctuating rainbows.
"You see," Yumi said while finishing up her notes for the moment. "Our brains aren't made to process this amount of information. So for the ordinary person, seeing the entire EM spectrum at once would make them immediately go into shock and die.”
Zarlivius was too focused on trying to make sense of the radio waves to respond. His eyes darted around the room, following the swirling patterns of color, his expression a mix of fascination and pain.
Yumi studied him closely, noting his every reaction. "Just hang in there. You're almost there," she reassured him, her voice calm and steady. "You're done with the right end of the spectrum, and now it's time to finish up the left side of it, starting with the X-rays."
Incoming the X-ray spectrum. Yumi's skeleton became visible to Zarlivius, giving him the most intimate view of her that he can possibly get, seeing her body heat and skeleton at the same time.
Zarlivius let out a shocked gasp as the X-ray spectrum kicked in, seeing Yumi's bones glowing in stark contrast to her warmer heat signature. The sight was both intriguing and slightly disturbing.
"Jesus Christ..." Zarlivius muttered, his eyes wide. "I can see your skeleton…”
Yumi smiled, unperturbed by Zarlivius' reaction. "Yes, X-ray light allows you to see through opaque objects. It's a powerful spectrum, but it can also be quite overwhelming. Your head should feel like it's about to explode any moment now..."
Zarlivius gave a pained nod, his expression strained. "Yeah, it already does," he grunted. "Ugh, I need a break, just one moment—"
He tried closing his eyes, but the X-rays easily went through his eyelids, enabling him to see through them, thus making closing them futile.
Yumi chuckled at Zarlivius' failed attempt to close his eyes. "I told you, the X-ray spectrum can see through most objects, including eyelids," she reminded him, her tone laced with amusement. "You can't escape it that easily."
Zarlivius groaned in despair, his head now throbbing painfully. "This is insane... When will the pain finally stop?!" he demanded, frustration seeping into his voice.
"Just a bit more," Yumi reassured him. "You're almost there. Just need to wait for gamma rays..."
He didn't have to wait long for the gamma rays to finally kick in. Now he could see through almost everything around him, even his own body, making him and Yumi look transparent like ghosts rather than solid.
Zarlivius' eyes went wide as the gamma rays flooded in, causing a new wave of pain to erupt within him. "Oh god..." he gasped, his head feeling like it would explode at any moment. "How...how much more?"
Yumi checked her watch, noting the time. "Not much longer," she assured him. "Just a couple more minutes, and you'll be able to perceive the entire electromagnetic spectrum at once. Hang in there, just a little longer. You're doing fine.”
Zarlivius gritted his teeth as he fought to endure the pain. The gamma rays were more intense than any other spectrum he had experienced so far, and it felt like his brain was about to overload with too much information.
"I...I don't know if I can take this much longer..." he groaned, his hands holding his head in desperation. "It hurts...it hurts so damn much...!”
Yumi's expression softened, her tone more empathic now. "I know, it's hard," she admitted, her voice gentle. "But you're going to make it, I promise. You just need to endure a little longer. Your body and your brain are adapting to the new information, it's a normal reaction...just hang in there."
Zarlivius let out a sharp moan of pain, tears now welling up in his eyes. "I...I'm trying...but it's so much...!"
He couldn't help himself. He let out a piercing scream of agony and insanity as the overwhelming colorful smudge tortured his vision, his brain feeling like it's on fire.
Yumi watched Zarlivius' excruciating struggle, her expression a mix of sympathy and focus. It was clear that the serum's side effects were taking their toll on him, but she kept her composure, reminding herself that this was part of the process.
"You're almost there, just a bit more," she said, her voice a soothing contrast to Zarlivius' anguished cries. "Just hold on, you can make it. You're showing remarkable resilience…”
Zarlivius couldn't form any coherent words at this point, merely letting out guttural screams of pain and agony as the rest of the gamma ray spectrum kicked in, giving him full access to the entire EM spectrum. He clutched his head tightly, as if trying to somehow shield himself from the onslaught of information.
Yumi, still cool and calm, observed the process with clinical detachment. She made mental notes of every reaction, noting the intensity of Zarlivius' pain and the changes in his appearance. Her tone, however, held a touch of reassurance, albeit slightly forced.
Zarlivius' screams continued, each one more shrill and anguished than the last. It was clear that the full onslaught of the gamma ray spectrum was taking a heavy toll on his mental and physical state.
Yumi frowned slightly as she observed Zarlivius' increasingly erratic behavior. She had anticipated that the final stage would be intense, but the level of pain he was experiencing seemed borderline dangerous.
"Zarlivius, try to focus on my voice," she said firmly. "Breathe, and try to relax. You're at the end now.”
Zarlivius, his mind now a haze of pain and confusion, couldn't process Yumi's words properly. The overwhelming sensations were too much for him. He continued to writhe and scream, his body twitching uncontrollably, as if each nerve was on fire.
Yumi watched his condition worsen, her eyebrows furrowing in growing concern. The intensity of his reaction was far beyond her expectations. She knew the serum was experimental, but the extent of his distress was alarming her.
"Zarlivius, listen to me!" Yumi's voice turned sharper, more demanding. "Focus on my voice and take deep breaths. You need to calm yourself down; you're spiraling out of control!"
However, Zarlivius was too far gone in his agony to respond. He continued to cry out, his voice hoarse and strained, his mind and body completely overwhelmed, until...his movement stopped altogether, his body going stiff, and then limp.
Yumi's eyes widened as Zarlivius' body abruptly went limp. She had expected a period of intense pain, but not a sudden collapse.
Moving quickly, she rushed over to Zarlivius' side, checking his vitals. He was still breathing, but his eyes were rolled back, and his body was completely unresponsive.
Yumi swore under her breath, her professional calm slipping for a moment. Her experiment had taken an unexpected turn.
She carefully lifted Zarlivius' head, placing it gently in her lap, trying to assess his condition. She checked his pulse once more, only to find no response. As she predicted, he went into shock. And died.
Yumi stared at Zarlivius' lifeless form, her expression a mix of frustration and disbelief. This wasn't the intended outcome. She had been so confident in the serum's potency, so sure that she could control the process. But now, she was left with a tragic result.
With a sigh, Yumi gingerly laid Zarlivius down on the floor. This was not just a setback, but a major failure. But she was not ready to give up yet. Not like this…
