Chapter 9:
Love, Bites and Bytes
The mansion was dark. Late, or early, depending on perspective. The kind of hour when the world felt suspended between days.
Mio climbed the stairs first, Akira following. She was wearing his shirt. Hers had gotten... misplaced at some point. His was oversized on her small frame, hanging past her shorts, sleeves rolled up multiple times.
Neither of them spoke. Didn't need to. Something had shifted between them in that basement. Something fundamental.
The living room light was on.
Of course it was.
Reina sat in an armchair, wine glass in hand (blood, presumably), looking like she'd been waiting for hours. Which she probably had.
Momo was sprawled upside-down on the couch, phone in hand, but she looked up when they entered. Grinned immediately.
"Well well well," she said. "Look who finally surfaced."
Mio's hand tightened on Akira's. She'd grabbed it somewhere on the stairs and hadn't let go.
Reina set down her glass. Studied them both with an unreadable expression.
"You told him," she said.
Not a question.
Mio nodded. "Everything."
"Everything everything?" Momo sat up properly, suddenly serious. "Like, the revolution stuff? The secret base? The whole 'trying to change vampire society' thing?"
"All of it."
Reina stood slowly. Walked closer. Her gaze moved between Mio and Akira, assessing.
"And?" she asked.
Akira squeezed Mio's hand. "I'm still here."
The weight of those three words hung in the air.
Momo tilted her head. "Okay but like... you GET what she's doing, right? This isn't just dating a vampire. This is dating a vampire who's trying to start a revolution. That's a LOT."
"I get it."
"Do you though?" Reina's tone was sharp now. "Because Mio isn't just some vampire with a progressive business model. She's trying to fundamentally reshape vampire-human relations. She's making enemies. Powerful ones."
"I know."
"And you're okay with that? With being part of that? With being a target?"
Akira didn't hesitate. "Yes."
Momo made a sound. "Wow. He really drank the Kool-Aid, huh?"
"Momo," Mio said quietly.
"What? I'm just saying! He shows up, you feed him a few times, have some mediocre dates…"
"They weren't mediocre…"
"...and suddenly he's down to risk his life for vampire civil rights?" Momo hopped off the couch. "That's either really romantic or really stupid. Haven't decided which."
"It can be both," Akira said.
That surprised a laugh out of her. "Okay, fair."
Reina was still watching them. "Did you do the blood pact?"
Mio stiffened. "No."
"Why not?"
"I trust him without it."
"That's not the point…"
"It IS the point." Mio's voice was firm now. "The blood pact is about control. Insurance. I don't want that."
Reina sighed. Turned to Akira. "Do you know what a blood pact is?"
"No."
"It's a magical binding. Links vampire and human permanently." She gestured, elegant and precise. "Creates a connection that can't be broken except by death. The vampire can always find the human. Always know if they're in danger. And the human... gains some protection. The vampire physically cannot drain them to death. Built-in safeguard."
"Sounds useful," Akira said slowly.
"It is. It's why most traditional vampire-human relationships use it." Reina crossed their arms. "It prevents betrayal. Both ways. The vampire can't kill the human, even accidentally. The human can't run, can't hide, can't escape."
"Escape," Akira repeated.
"It's a leash," Mio said flatly. "For both parties. I won't do that to him."
"Even if it keeps you both safe?"
"Even then."
Momo was watching Mio with an odd expression. "You're really serious about this. Like, really really serious."
"Yes."
"About HIM specifically? Or about proving your whole coexistence thing works?"
The question hung there.
Mio looked at Akira. "Both. But him first."
Momo's expression softened slightly. "Okay. That's... actually kind of sweet. Still think you're both insane, but sweet."
"Thank you for that ringing endorsement," Akira said.
"Hey, I call it like I see it." She flopped back onto the couch. "So what now? You two gonna go public? Post couple selfies? Stream together?"
"Momo…"
"I'm serious! You know people are gonna talk. Boss is already a public figure. And now she's dating a human. Openly. No blood pact." She pulled out her phone, started scrolling. "The comments section is gonna be WILD."
"We're not posting about it," Mio said quickly.
"You don't have to. Someone will." Momo showed them her phone. "See? Someone already spotted Akira's car outside. Posted about it in the vampire community forums. 'Coven lord's human visitor. Multiple nights a week. Suspicious?' Twenty-three comments already."
Mio paled. "They're watching the house?"
"Boss, you run a public-facing business. Of course they're watching."
Reina took the phone, scrolled through. Her expression darkened. "Some of these comments..."
"Yeah, not great." Momo's voice had lost its playful edge. "Some are supportive. Lots are... not. Couple of death threats, but those are pretty standard. What's concerning is this one…" She pointed. "From a verified elder account."
Akira looked. The comment was simple: "Disgraceful. Will be addressed."
"What does that mean?" he asked.
"Nothing good," Reina said quietly. She handed back the phone. "Mio, you knew this would happen."
"I hoped we'd have more time."
"Time for what?"
"To prove it works. To build enough support that they couldn't…" She shook her head. "It doesn't matter. It's happening now."
Momo set down her phone. "So what's the plan? Hide him? Pretend you're just client-vendor?"
"No." Mio's voice was steady. "No more hiding."
"Boss…"
"I've been hiding for three months. Hiding from them. From the outside. From everything." She looked at Akira. "I'm done hiding. If we hide this, we prove them right. That vampire-human relationships have to be secret. Shameful. That we can't coexist openly."
"You'll make yourselves targets," Reina said.
"We're already targets."
"Not like this. Not publicly."
Mio's jaw set. "Then let them come."
Momo and Reina exchanged looks.
"She's serious," Momo said.
"Unfortunately." Reina turned to Akira. "And you? You understand what you're signing up for?"
"I understand it's dangerous. That people will judge. That we might fail." He looked at Mio. "But I also understand that hiding means giving up. And I'm not ready to do that."
Reina studied him for a long moment. Then sighed. "You're both idiots."
"But?" Mio prompted.
"But you're OUR idiots." She picked up their wine glass again. "If you're doing this, you're doing it right. No half-measures. No secret relationship that could be used against you."
"What are you suggesting?"
"That you get ahead of it. Control the narrative." Reina gestured to Momo. "She's right that someone will post about this. Better if it comes from you first."
Mio looked horrified. "You want me to... announce it? Publicly?"
"I want you to not get blindsided." Reina's voice was gentle now. "The elders are already talking. The community forums are buzzing. You either address it on your terms or they define it for you."
"I can't…public announcement…that's…"
"You don't have to do it tonight. Or even this week. But soon." They looked at Akira. "Both of you. Together. Showing that this is real, consensual, and not something to be ashamed of."
Momo perked up. "Ooh, I can help! We could do a joint stream. Very casual. Q&A format. Address concerns directly…"
"I am NOT doing a Q&A about my relationship…"
"Then the tabloids will do it for you. And trust me, they'll be way less charitable."
Mio looked at Akira helplessly.
"We'll figure it out," he said. "Together."
She nodded, still looking overwhelmed.
Reina raised their glass. "Well then. To reckless decisions and impossible dreams."
"To Boss finally getting some," Momo added.
"Momo!"
"What? It's TRUE!" She grinned, unrepentant. "You two were down there for HOURS. The walls aren't that thick…"
Mio grabbed a throw pillow and hurled it at her. Momo caught it, laughing.
"I'm just saying! Good for you! Sex positive household and all that…"
Another pillow. Momo dodged.
"Okay okay! I'll stop!" She was still grinning. "But seriously, Boss. I'm happy for you. Even if you're both walking disasters waiting to happen."
"Thanks. I think."
"It's a compliment. Probably." Momo flopped back on the couch. "Just promise me one thing."
"What?"
"When the elders inevitably summon you to explain yourself, can I come? I wanna watch you tell ancient vampires that you're dating a human because you fell in love and they can deal with it."
"They're not going to summon me…"
"They're absolutely going to summon you," Reina said. "Probably within the month. Elder Council doesn't like being ignored, and you've been ignoring their 'suggestions' for years."
"Suggestions?"
"To run your coven traditionally. To use blood pacts. To keep humans at arm's length." Reina swirled her wine. "You've been getting away with it because you were quiet about it. Profitable, legitimate, but quiet. Now? You're making a statement."
Mio sank onto the couch, suddenly exhausted. "I didn't mean to make a statement. I just... fell in love."
"Unfortunately," Reina said gently, "for someone in your position, falling in love IS a statement."
Akira sat beside her. She immediately leaned into him, seeking comfort.
"We'll figure it out," he said again.
"You keep saying that."
"Because it's true."
Momo made a gagging sound. "You two are disgustingly cute. I'm gonna go vomit now. Or stream. Maybe both."
She headed toward the stairs, then paused. Looked back.
"But for real, Boss. I'm glad you told him. About everything." Her voice was surprisingly serious. "You needed someone who knew. Who understood. Who chose you anyway, knowing all of it."
"Thanks, Momo."
"Yeah, yeah. Don't get used to me being nice. It's weird." She bounded up the stairs, phone already out.
Reina remained, watching them.
"You really told him everything?" she asked quietly.
Mio nodded. "The dream. The fear. The constant battle. All of it."
"And the incident? Three months ago?"
"Yes."
Reina's expression softened. "How did he react?"
"He..." Mio's voice caught. "He said trying was enough. That I didn't have to be perfect."
"Good." Reina stood, smoothed their clothes. "Then he's worthy of you."
"Reina…"
"I mean it. I've been worried. That you'd choose someone who didn't understand the weight you carry. The impossible thing you're trying to do." She looked at Akira. "But you see it, don't you? What she's really trying to accomplish?"
"I do."
"And you're prepared for what that means? The danger? The scrutiny? The possibility of failure?"
"No," Akira said honestly. "I'm not prepared. But I'm willing."
Reina smiled. Small, but genuine. "That'll do."
She headed toward their room, then stopped at the doorway.
"Mio?"
"Yes?"
"I'm proud of you. For trusting him. For trusting yourself enough to be vulnerable." Her voice was soft. "You've been alone for so long. I'm glad you're not anymore."
Mio felt tears prick her eyes. "Thank you."
Reina nodded and disappeared down the hallway.
The living room fell quiet. Just Mio and Akira, sitting close on the couch.
"Your family is intense," Akira said.
"They're protective."
"I noticed."
Mio played with the hem of his shirt, the one she was wearing. "They're right, you know. About the danger. The elders. The scrutiny."
"I know."
"And you still want this?"
"I still want this."
She looked up at him. "Why?"
"Because you're worth it. Because what you're trying to do is worth it." He touched her face gently. "Because I love you."
"Even knowing everything? Even knowing what's coming?"
"Even knowing everything."
She kissed him. Soft, tender, overwhelming.
When they pulled apart, she whispered: "I love you too."
She buried her face in his shoulder. "We're really doing this. Aren't we?"
"Looks like it."
"It's going to be hard."
"Probably."
"We might fail."
"Maybe."
"They might kill us."
"Let's try to avoid that one."
She laughed, watery but real. "Okay. Deal."
They sat there in the quiet living room, holding each other.
Upstairs, Momo was probably already streaming about "Boss's new boyfriend drama."
In their room, Reina was likely drafting contingency plans for when the Elder Council inevitably summoned them.
And somewhere out in the vampire community, forums were buzzing with speculation and judgment.
But for now, in this moment, it was just the two of them.
Choosing each other.
Despite the danger.
Despite the fear.
Despite everything.
And that felt like enough.
The next morning, Akira had to leave for work.
Mio walked him to the door, still wearing his shirt, her hair a mess, looking absolutely exhausted and absolutely happy.
"Same time tomorrow?" she asked.
"It's not a session anymore," he reminded her.
"Right. A date."
"A date where you might drink my blood."
"Is that okay?"
"It's perfect."
She smiled, rose on her toes to kiss him goodbye.
"Be careful," she said. "Your coworkers are going to notice."
"Notice what?"
She touched the bandage on his neck, fresh from last night's session. Then gestured to his general state of dishevelment.
"That you look like you spent the night with a vampire."
"I did spend the night with a vampire."
"They're going to ask questions."
"Let them."
She blinked. "Really?"
"Really. I'm not hiding this. Hiding you." He kissed her forehead. "Let them talk. I know what's real."
Her eyes got suspiciously shiny. "I love you."
"I love you too."
He left. Made it to his car. Looked back.
She was still at the door, watching. Waved.
He waved back.
Started the car.
His phone buzzed. A text from Mio: Drive safe. Text me when you get to work. I worry.
He smiled. I will. Try to get some sleep.
Can't. Too happy.
You're ridiculous.
You love me anyway.
Unfortunately.
:)
He set down his phone. Started driving.
His coworkers were definitely going to notice. The bandage. The exhaustion. The stupid smile he couldn't seem to wipe off his face.
They were going to have questions. Concerns. Warnings.
And he'd deal with it.
Because Mio was worth it.
Because what they had was worth fighting for.
Because for the first time in years, he felt alive.
Even if it might kill him.
