Chapter 6:

Promise

Beneath the White Shadow

The helicopter touched down at the airport, dropping off Kitai and Mai.

"The third condition has been fulfilled!”

The negotiator announced.

The bald man knocked on the aircraft door before stepping down. Passengers rushed out then the tactical team pulled back.

"You, get inside! Officer, this way! Amarok waiting for you!”

He ordered Mai into the plane and led Kitai into the terminal building, stunning every agency watching.

"Where’s he taking him?!”
"Amarok isnt there?!”
"Change plan! Change plan!”

Intelligence unit monitored from the air with a sniper locked and ready.

"Looks like you hit the spot again, Tortilla!”
"There’s a reason why we’re called intelligence…”

Kitai glanced at his back as the airplane where Mai sat in taxied toward the runway.

"Where they taking her?”
"Somewhere safe cause this place soon gonna be a battlefield!”
"What?!”

Kitai frowned in disbelief.

"No worries, Im taking you somewhere… somewhat safe too! Amarok wanna chit chat with you!”

They entered corporate office at the top floor. Outside, perimeter unit evacuated civilians and reporters as tactical units prepared to breach.

"Listen, my beloved pack! Our commander has abandoned us! We on our own now!”

Amarok slammed the table, speaking through a microphone.

"WE ARE THE PROUD WOLVES! LYKOS!!! LOBO!!! FIGHT TO THE END! PROVE YOUR LOYALTY TO ME!!! LET’S SHOW THEM OUR TEETH!!! HOWL YOUR WAR CRY!!!”
"AWWWUUUUUU!!!”
"AWUU AWWUUU AWUUUUU!!!”
"AWUUU! AWUUUUU!!!”

Multiple gunmen inside the building equipped with Uzis, howled out loud.

"Commander?”
Kitai asked.

"Ahh… We worked for a dark guild under the Third Commander, but it seems like we were betrayed! That sheety demon!”
"Dark guild? Third Commander?! Is this the national threat Ishina mentioned?!

The bald man opened the office door and pushed Kitai inside, leaving him alone with Amarok.

"Finally!”

Amarok threw the microphone to his back.

"Officer Yamaguchi Kitai! Its an honour to see you in person!”
"Wow, am I that famous?”
"Heh… I heard you have a cute daughter, what’s her name again? Loon? Muna?”

Kitai removed his bulky vest.

"Luna! Your daughter cute too, Mai right? I heard you lied to her…”
"I lied a lot to her, pretty sure you do too, officer!”

Kitai stripped off the rest of his armor and adjusted his clothes.

"You told her the pendant is a lucky charm… Is that a lie too?”
"Am I being detained, officer? Do I have the right to remain silent?”

Amarok smirked and Kitai nodded.

"Guess there’s only one way to find out!”

Kitai punched his palm and Amarok dropped his handgun. They looked at each other before their fist collided. Outside, gunfire erupted between Amarok’s men and tactical units.

"Reloading!”
"Covering! Covering!”
"Watchout crossfire!”

Tactical team formed a five shield-unit barricade, advancing while protecting the assault team. Amarok’s men were heavily countered, forced to pull back as they losing ground.

"Back! Back!”
"Go! Go!”
"Retreat!”

Tactical team held position, awaiting orders. Inside, Kitai struggled as the gunshot wounded in his shoulder screamed in every movement.

"Please stay with me buddy!
Kitai whispered.

Amarok leapt. In a split second, Kitai saw an opening. He twisted his body low, smashing his elbow into Amarok’s ribs then snapping upward into his chin.

"Tskkk!
"Not bad, officer! Is that what they taught you in academy?”

Amarok kicked him away. Kitai staggered, biting back his pain.

"I cant show him my weakness!
Kitai whispered.

"No need to hide it officer! I already know!”
"Wha-…”

Amarok leaned on the desk.

"We’re both a father to our daughter! Hiding our pain is what we do!”
Amarok chuckled.

"You sound like a good father, why chose this path?”
Kitai gasped.

"Not everyone were raised under the roof, officer! Some were born on the street… It’s a cruel survival game we playing! Gotta do what you gotta do in this RPG!”

Amarok rushed forward and threw a punch but Kitai caught the blow.

"Im sorry to hear that! But your action only make things worst!”
"Once you fall into the void, there’s no way out! Just like our lies and promises to our daughter! Stacked one after another! It keeps going and never stop!”

Kitai flinched and Amarok knocked him back.

"Ughh!”

Kitai bent forward, breathing hard, staring at the floor. Amarok stepped back, give him space.

"Looks like I triggered a flag!”
"We different!”
"Huh?”

Kitai lifted his head slowly.

"I lied to her… to protect her innocence… I broke my promises… Cause my duty got in the way… All these happened, because of people like YOU!!!”

Amarok frowned and kicking him. Kitai retaliated with a counter kick. Amarok struck with his fist but Kitai slapped his arm aside.

"Alpha clear!”
"Charlie clear!”
"Echo clear!”

Amarok’s gunmen fought to the very end, throwing their lives away.

"Bravo and Delta also clear, sir!”
"Good! Now its time to save Officer Kitai! Top floor! Corporate Office!”
"Move! Move! Move!”

Kitai and Amarok traded punches, kicks and brutal blows. They squeezed out every last drop of strength, despite bleeding and gasping, fighting as if there were no tomorrow until both of them hit the limit.

"Ughh akk!

Kitai final punch smashed into Amarok’s face, knocking him backward to the floor, landing beside his gun.

"Sheet!

Kitai dropped to his knee, breathing heavily. Amarok grabbed the handgun and pointed it at Kitai’s head.

"Hey, that’s illegal!”
"Im a criminal, officer!”

They both chuckled weakly, enduring the pain.

"So… what promise you made to your daughter, Officer Kitai?"
"I promised her… that I will return home… How abou… you?”

Outside, the tactical team twisted the door knob but its locked. They kicked it but it wouldnt budge.

"We need a breacher!”
"Bring the breacher!”

Amarok smiled, gazing up at the ceiling.

"I promise her that… one day… I take her fly with me… watch the sunrise… together… I might not be there… but at least… she got what she want…”

The first glimmed of the sunlight crept over the horizon. Mai watched the sunrise from the airplane window with tears.

"BREACH! BREACH!”

Tactical team breached the door.

"Em?”

Luna woke to the sound of the doorbell. She rushed down stair, followed by her mother and Yuki.

"Otto sa-… an”
"Anat-… ta”

Luna opened the door, only to see the Watch Commander stood, head bowed. Her mother collapsed to her knees with tears streaming down her face. Yuki covered her mouth, eyes wide in shock.

"Otto… san…”

Luna trembled as she slowly stepped backward. His bravery, service and sacrifice were awarded the highest honours by both the government and his department.

"In the effort to recover the economy, our country... has lost a priceless asset…”
The Chief of Police said.

"Amarok finally gone!”
"I know right! What a relief!”
"Who would’ve thought, it was human and not a wolf?!”

A month passed, yet Amarok’s name still echoed through the streets. Luna walked alone, head lowered. Amri was hanging a frame when suddenly she entered his store.

"Welcome to Amri Pastr-… Oh Luna! Feeling better?”

She nodded then pointed at the donuts in the glass shelves. Amri filled a box with a dozen of assorted toppings.

"Anything else?”

She shook her head and reached for her purse.

"No need! Its on the house!”

She smiled faintly and nodded. As she lifted the box, her eyes caught the framed photo of a mountain under the shining moonlight with a title ‘Full of Promises’.

"Your father was a great cop…”
Amri said.

She lowered her gazed, turned around and walked towards the exit.

"Luna!”
Amri called.

She stood, froze without turning.

"The battle isnt over yet! Just like donut, Amarok was only the hole in the middle… There’s bigger threat beneath the white shadow!”

He stepped closer.

"If you want, I can recommend you to someone… You can carry on your father’s legacy! Keep fighting on his behalf! Fulfill the promises that he failed to keep!”

She held the box tighter, nodded as her tears streamed down her cheeks.

- The End -

Extra 06:
Six years later, Luna lay prone atop a building with a sniper riffle braced against her shoulder. Her eye locked onto the scope beneath the fading light of evening.

"NAGA SHARKIEEE!!!”
"LOAN WHALEEE!!!”

Two groups were prepared for gunfight, one taking cover behind cars, the other covered inside the building.

"Well, that was unexpected! All units, prepare to engage! It’s a three way battle!”
"Shouldn’t we call for backup?”

Two male voices crackled through through her earpiece.

"Im the only backup we need!”
She replied.

She closed her eyes as the wind brushed through her hair.

"Otto san wa usotsuki… Demo…

She opened them again and smiles.

"Daisuki!

She steadied her breathing.

"One donut!”
Shot fired.

"Two donut!”
Shot fired.

"Three donut!”
Shot fired.
