Chapter 7:
Twist
"Kid, how long have you known that you were a Twister?" Ramon said directly. The boy stopped reading his comic and looked up at Ramon. He had short brown hair and fair skin, as well as brown eyes. His lips trembled as he made eye contact with Ramon.
The parents looked surprised, but the younger woman immediately spoke up.
"N-no, he's not a Twister, he can't be!" She said. "Only women can be Twisters!"
"Quit being wrong and stop talking." He ordered the woman, then turned back to the boy. "Answer the question."
"I-I'm not a Twister." He said, trying to sound calm.
The boy's parents looked extremely confused.
"That's not what my compass is telling me." Ramon held his compass next to the boy's chest. The mercury in it was bubbling wildly.
The boy and the young woman looked nervous. Their parents exchanged worried glances.
"How old are you?" Ramon asked.
"Twelve."
Ramon looked back at the parents and shook his head disapprovingly.
"And you've already manifested your Twister ability?" Ramon asked.
"I-I'm not a Twist-!"
"Stop lying." Ramon said coolly.
The boy stilled. Ramon crouched down so that he was at eye level with the boy. He sighed.
"You were the one behind the dragon that coiled around the Tokyo Skytree, weren't you?"
"How can you suggest that my son-"
"Stop talking sir." Ramon raised one palm towards the father.
"I will not! You're implying that my son is some sort of deranged criminal, after having done the same thing to my daughter! I want you gone!" Said the father.
"Sir, I would like nothing more than to get out of your hair and never have to return, but something needs to be done about your son and his abilities. You saw the damage he caused on the news, didn't you?"
The parents of the boy shifted uncomfortably. The young woman spoke up from her hospital bed.
"N-nobody got hurt!" She interjected. "Why are you so angry about this?"
Ramon pinched the bridge of his nose and closed his eyes.
"Because your brother has been cursed with Twist, and he will die from it unless you two," he pointed at the parents, "decide to subject him to the Twist removal surgery and save his life."
"People have died because of that surgery!" Said the mother.
"Only a small percentage, and compared to the amount of people who don't get the surgery and die, I'd say the risk is well worth taking." He said, trying to sound calm.
"Well, we are not you." The father said sternly.
Ramon looked at the boy, the parents, and then clenched his fists as hard as he could.
"Thank you for your time." He stated sharply. "I need to make a few calls and bring in some officials so that they can decide on the appropriate course of action." He grit his teeth. "I can assure you that the Twist removal surgery will only be performed if you two and your son fully consent to it." He bowed towards the parents, then stepped out of the hospital room before he could hear their answer.
As soon as he was outside the room, he leaned against the wall next to it and called Percy. Within two rings, his call was answered.
"What's happened?"
"I found the Twister."
There was a moment of silence.
"That was rather expeditious, even for you."
"I've been walking all night. I got lucky that the Twister was visiting his sister in the hospital."
Percy inhaled sharply.
"I-I apologize, Ramon. I never imagined that you'd be forced to recreate Nova Scotia."
"No, the Twister looks like he's still got it together. From the circumstances, I think it's the kid's first time losing control of his powers."
Percy could be heard tapping his desk.
"Ramon, you said 'his sister' and now you've said 'kid.' What are the physical attributes of this Twister?" Percy sounded a little uneasy. "I hope that you'll tell me you're referring to an adult male with a physical deformity, and not a young boy."
"I hate to disappoint you, Percy." Ramon said quietly. "But it's a young boy; twelve years old."
Ramon heard Percy mutter a curse.
"How did the parents take your arrival?"
"They hate me. I can't say I blame them; I thought it was their bedridden daughter at first. She looks like she'd be the right age, but she's not a Twister." He shook his head. "It seems like she was trying to cover for her brother." His grip on the phone tightened. "These people; don't they; how could they; these stupid-"
"Stop that." Percy stated. "Did you make them aware of the risks that Twist carries? Of how it can and will ruin the life of their son, not to mention the lives of those around him?"
"I did; well, I told them about what it would do when I still thought their daughter had it, but I think I made it clear that the same rules apply to the boy."
"You're not exactly inspiring confidence in me at the moment." Percy said calmly. "Regardless, at least you found the Twister. Shall I send in the bureaucrats?"
Ramon glanced back into the hospital room. The three older family members were discussing things again, while the boy everything revolved around read his comic.
"Yeah, send them in. You can track my location, right?"
"Of course."
"Make it speedy."
"You're aware of how much I loathe indolence; I shall send the bureaucrats over as quickly as I can." Percy said calmly. "You've done well, Ramon."
Ramon looked back into the hospital room. His eyes were laser-focused on the boy.
"Thanks, Percy." He mumbled into his phone. "Call me when it's time for me to go."
"I will; take care until then."
The call ended, and Ramon was left looking at the family of four. He waited outside their room for half an hour, and when the men in suits and ties arrived and started crowding into the small hospital room, he took that as his cue to leave.
He didn't look back at the small family as he left the hospital and began the long walk back to his hotel on the other side of Tokyo.
The sun rose while he walked.
