Chapter 10:
Twist
Junnosuke woke up slowly. He didn't recognize where he was. The room he was in was small and dimly lit, but the bed he was in was large and soft. He yawned and began glancing around as he tried to remember what had happened the night before.
He looked into one of the corners of the room and saw the old man.
Ramon covered the kid's mouth before he could scream.
"Quiet."
Junnosuke thrashed against the old man, but his grip was too strong. He had the terrifying thought that this was how he would die. The Twisthunter was going to kill him and hide his body. He thrashed even harder.
Ramon let the kid struggle. After a few minutes, the kid started to slow down. Ramon had to admit that he was a fighter.
Junnosuke looked at the old man. He stopped fighting and realized that maybe he could use his Twist power and escape. His own, normal strength clearly wasn't enough at the moment. He took a deep breath, then started hyperventilating.
Ramon exhaled through his nose as the kid's eyes started swirling like whirlpools. The kid's breathing became rapid. The air around the kid became hazy and hard to see through. He could feel the kid's body rippling and swirling under his grasp.
Ramon slapped the kid.
Junnosuke immediately lost track of his progress in using his ability.
"Don't do that." He stated.
Junnosuke blanched. He'd never had someone interrupt him while he was trying to use his Twist power. The sensation had felt like he was on fire and someone had doused him with a bucket of ice cold water. Nevertheless, even after he'd had his backup plan thwarted, Junnosuke simply began thrashing with renewed vigor.
While he pinned the kid down, Ramon started talking again.
"I'll be taking you back to your family before the end of the week."
Junnosuke kept fighting.
"But before I do that, I'll be having your Twist removed."
He fought back harder; tears formed in Junnosuke's eyes.
Ramon hated what he was doing. It took every ounce of willpower for him not to throw up and let the kid run out of the hotel room at that moment.
Still, he held the kid down until both of them were exhausted. Every time Junnosuke tried to use Twist power, Ramon would slap him out of it.
"I haven't introduced myself. I'm Ramon Cortez. I know your family name is Arai, but I didn't catch your name specifically." He still had a hand over the kid's mouth. "I'm going to move my hand off your mouth, and you'll tell me your name."
Junnosuke nodded; as soon as Ramon lifted his hand, he tried to scream. Ramon slapped his hand down over his mouth again.
Ramon hated everything about what he was doing.
Junnosuke hated Ramon.
"Fine. I don't need your name anyway." Ramon said after a pause. "Look; I don't care what the government said or what you or your parents think is the best course of action. I have seen Twist ruin the lives of dozens of people, and my colleagues have seen the same thing. It doesn't matter how cool or unique your Twist powers are, and it doesn't matter how much of a good person you think you are; Twist is going to ruin your life if you let it linger inside you. All I plan on doing is getting rid of your Twist, and then I'll send you back to your family."
Ramon could see the kid's hated burning in his eyes. He shouldn't have expected anything else; when he had been in the kid's position, he'd felt the exact same way.
"This'll all be over a lot faster if you cooperate with me a little bit instead of fighting me every step of the way. We can have this done by tonight instead of having me drag you around for two to three days while pretending to be a hunchback."
The kid thrashed some more.
Ramon sighed and knocked the kid unconscious with more chloroform. Once the kid was out, he slung him onto his bag, reapplied his disguise, and walked out of the hotel slowly. He kept his head down so that nobody would get a good look at his face. He stepped out into the streets of Tokyo. It was the afternoon.
He racked his mind for somewhere he could find someone involved in organized crime. If he'd been able to talk to Percy, it would've been much easier, but he'd already dropped that lifeline. He thought about his predicament a little more while he toted the kid on his back. He remembered hearing something about Osaka, but he wasn't sure where that was.
The thought crossed his mind that perhaps getting involved with people involved in organized crime was a terrible, horrible, life-threatening idea that might end with him and the kid dead in a gutter or at the bottom of the ocean.
He winced, and his head throbbed.
Organized crime was definitely not the solution he was looking for. He needed someone independent of others; someone unscrupulous and single-minded.
He kept walking through Tokyo's back alleys and streets, staying as far away from the CCTV cameras as he could, while he tried to figure out what to do next.
As he crossed the street slowly, he realized who he needed to find; someone guilty of medical malpractice; specifically a surgeon. He closed his eyes and thought about where to look for someone like that.
He passed by a pair of restaurants and became keenly aware of how many people were going about their day around him. He began sweating profusely as he feared what would happen if any of them thought he looked suspicious. There was no doubt in his mind that his face was now on Tokyo's most wanted. He'd be surprised if they didn't send some other Twisthunters after him, not to mention that what he was doing probably looked really incriminating and would provide fuel for those stupid people who believed Twist could be beneficial.
He felt the kid weighing him down, but he couldn't stop.
