Chapter 8:

Metal Guardian

Dark Fables of Void V2 — Quantum Mix

Kinsey's grip on her knife tightens even more, her knuckles turning white. "Show yourself," she demands, her voice steady despite the nervousness coursing through her.

There's a low, metallic hum in response, followed by the sound of heavy footsteps. The girls watch with bated breath as an imposing shadow materializes at the end of the alley.

The figure is massive, towering over six feet tall. Its form is unlike anything the girls have ever seen, a mix of machine and...something else, something biological.

Its body appears to be partially robotic, but there are flesh-like, bioluminescent veins snaking around its metallic exterior, pulsing with a soft, green light.

The figure takes a heavy step forward, closing the distance between it and the girls. It speaks again, its voice a deep, rumbling drone, "You are not supposed to be here.”

Rachel steps up as well, her bravery in stark contrast to her earlier nervousness. "We didn't know this place would be occupied. We're just..." she pauses, choosing her words carefully, "...just passing through."

The figure's eyes seem to scan the group, focusing on each girl in turn. Its gaze lingers on Alice, then on Kairy's gem blade. A strange, almost curious sound emanates from its metallic frame.

"You are not from here," the figure observes, its voice still deep and droning. "You're... different."

Rachel raises her chin slightly, her eyes never leaving the figure. "That's right," she replies. "We aren't from around here."

The figure's gaze seems to fix on Alice again, its eyes seemingly studying her Miracle Eyes. It takes another heavy step forward, the metallic whirrings from its body growing louder.

"Your eyes," the figure says, its voice tinged with a hint of curiosity. "They... see differently."

Alice stiffens, surprised that the figure actually noticed her Miracle Eyes. Her heart skips a beat.

Kinsey's eyes narrow, still gripping her knife. "What about her eyes?" she prompts gruffly, her protectiveness kicking in.

The figure takes another step forward, its eyes still fixed on Alice's. "She can see...energy," it states, its droning voice taking on a slightly more awe-like quality.

Alice swallows, her unease growing. This thing *knows* about her Miracle Eyes, which means it must be intelligent, or at least sentient.

Rachel glances at Alice, noticing her discomfort, before turning her gaze back to the towering figure. "And...how do you know that?" she challenges.

The figure's eyes continue to study Alice, seemingly scanning her eyes. "I...can...sense it," it responds.

Alice tenses further, her uneasiness reaching new heights. This thing can sense her abilities, making it even more of a threat.

Kinsey, now visibly annoyed, steps forward again, her grip on her knife tightening. "Okay, that's enough of the cryptic bullshit," she snaps. "Who...or rather, *what* the hell are you?”

The figure seems slightly amused by Kinsey's boldness, its metallic frame creaking with the slight movement. "I am... a guardian," it responds, its voice still deep and droning.

Rachel raises an eyebrow. "A guardian...of what exactly?" she asks, trying to glean any information she can.

The figure's gaze remains fixed on Alice, its answer short and to the point. "This facility.”

"A guardian of this facility," Kinsey repeats slowly. "And why, may I ask, do you feel the need to guard this place?"

The figure's gaze finally shifts from Alice, now focusing on Kinsey. "This facility holds...valuable resources," it states mechanically. "I protect those resources from...unwanted guests."

Rachel crosses her arms, her gaze narrowing. "And we, I assume, fall into the 'unwanted guests' category?”

The figure nods its head slowly, confirming their assumption. "You are...not authorized to be here."

Kinsey clenches her jaw, her eyes narrowing. "And what exactly do these 'valuable resources' consist of that require such heavy guarding, huh?”

The figure pauses for a moment, as if contemplating whether to give a full explanation. "This facility houses...top-secret research projects," it finally responds, its voice still droning.

Rachel lets out a dry scoff. "Top-secret research? Great. So, we stumble upon a top-secret research facility guarded by a..." she gestures to the figure with a sweeping hand, "...a robotic guardian who just so happens to be sentient and can sense energy. Just peachy.”

The figure seems to almost...shrug at Rachel's sarcasm, its metallic frame creaking again. "You have summed it up accurately."

Kinsey glances at the other girls, their expressions ranging from trepidation to outright wariness. "And what happens to the 'unwanted guests' who stumble upon all these...valuable resources and top-secret research projects?" she presses, her voice tight with thinly-veiled concern.

The figure gives another slow nod. "You are correct. Access to such information...is restricted."

Kinsey rolls her eyes, clearly frustrated. "Of course it is. Because why would anything be easy, right?”

Rachel is the next to chime in, her voice dripping with sarcasm. "And I'm guessing there's no way for us to leave this place, right? No back exit or anything, just...this massive metal guardian that we can't exactly just step over or go around.”

The figure remains impassive, its expression unreadable. "That is correct," it confirms, its droning voice showing no emotion.

Kinsey lets out a sharp sigh. "So, let me get this straight: we cannot leave, we cannot learn about whatever top-secret crap you're guarding, and you consider us threats because we accidentally stumbled upon this place. What, pray tell, do you plan on doing with us then?”

The figure takes a step closer to the girls, its towering frame casting a cold shadow over them. "You will...remain here," it responds, its voice now carrying a hint of finality.

Kinsey raises an eyebrow, not backing down. "Remain here, you say. Just like that? No discussion, no negotiation. You just decide that we're stuck here now, and that's the end of it?”

The figure remains unfazed by Kinsey's challenge, its eyes still fixed on the girls. "That is correct," it confirms, its droning voice matter-of-fact.

Rachel scoffs again, her tone biting. "So, basically, we're your prisoners now. Great. This just gets better and better."

"We're not prisoners to no-goddamn-body," Kinsey huffed, "We're gonna kick this thing's ass.”

The figure actually lets out a mechanical scoff, its metallic frame creaking with the gesture. "You...intend to fight me?" it remarks, its voice tinged with a hint of amusement. "You are brave...or foolish. Perhaps both."

Despite the robot's clear advantage and its blatant display of disregard for their freedom, Kinsey's determination doesn't waver. "Call it what you want, tin man. We ain't scared of you.”

The figure seems almost amused by Kinsey's unwavering determination, its droning voice now holding a hint of respect. "Bravery...is commendable," it says, its metallic frame creaking with a subtle shift.

Rachel, still not one to back down easily, steps forward, her voice steady. "Damn right, it is. And we're not about to let some metal guardian decide our fate like we're just...pieces on a chessboard.”

The figure pauses for a moment, mulling over her words. "You...have spirit. But it means nothing...if you can't back it up.”
