Chapter 30:
Stardust
Laya
Sis wasn’t in bed when I woke up, and I worried she hadn’t slept again. I got up, put on my suit, and walked out to look for her. The bridge was empty when I came there, but I checked the systems just in case. Everything was in the norm, and the log didn’t contain any worrying entries. I assumed the engine room was the most likely place to find her. I walked through the corridors filled with the hum of the ship when I heard voices coming from the canteen.
When I walked in, I found her sitting with the others. She looked happy, and her smile made me relax. Everything was okay. I walked over and squeezed myself between them. It felt nice. It was rare for all of us to be together like this. I glanced at the table, stained with coffee.
“What are you doing?”
“Just talking...”
Karla smiled and put her arm around me. I glanced at sis, but she just smiled, so I leaned into her. She smelled like those candies we had once had on Astrate, and I smiled, remembering how good they tasted.
“Talking about what…?”
“What we shall have for breakfast. Are you hungry?”
I nodded, and Karla got up and walked over to the kitchen. I wondered what she would make. I liked the food sis made, even though she just warmed up pre-made meals we always got in bulk, but it got a bit boring after a while. I still remembered Karla cooking us real food when she’d stayed with us. She even got us some ingredients at the last starport we visited.
Soon, the smell of food filled the canteen, and I realised how hungry I was.
“Did you sleep well?”, sis asked, and only then did I notice her painted nails.
“They look so nice!”
I took her hand.
“Can you do mine?”
She laughed and shook her head.
“Ask Kay”
Yeah, sis never was good with these things. I glanced at Karla in the kitchen.
“But she is busy…”
“I can try if you want.”
Sol picked the bottle from the table and looked at me with a smile.
“Can you?”
I smiled and moved closer, reaching out my hand. She took it and carefully began painting my nails. It felt so nice, it wasn’t often we did anything that wasn’t related to the ship or our routes.
We were done just in time for breakfast. I wondered what else we could do later. It was so nice to do something together, and this day felt like one of those days I wished would never end.
