Chapter 10:
Humans can't learn magic, so I'll quit being human to chase my dreams!
Okay, this is officially the weirdest day of my life, first I know I'm getting sold to the samurai without my knowing and surrender before the fight begins, after which we ride an ox drawn carriage toward a nearby village that I didn't even know existed. I get sent in to fight a bunch of raccoon dogs by myself, then faint.
When I wake up, I'm inside a house bandaged, while the guy who bandaged me, apparently called Leo, is fighting a massive bear all by himself, but reinforcements arrived as I awaken. When the last guys tag in as well, this Leo guy gets told to take me outside and finish bandaging there.
Then the entire building collapses and now I'm here digging up the so-called professional magic beast hunters? At least most of them braced for impact, everyone except for the Pierre guy fighting the shadow bear, he could either brace for the collapse or parry the massive bear claws swiping at him...
The people who braced for impact are all mostly fine, but Pierre is still missing.
Picking up and carrying these chunks of rubble away does hurt my leg quite a lot. Even if I don't know them for too long yet, or they don't seem to be exceptionally good at handling magic beasts... I can't help worrying about him and wanting to do anything I can to help.
After a few minutes of searching, Leo finds him unconscious and stuck beneath the middle beam of the roof, the heaviest part of the entire house.
Leo quickly assesses his condition and I walk towards them to help clear rubble, but after Leo finishes the assessment, we're forcibly dismissed, he gets to patch up our bandages some more.
Honestly there were so many scrapes from the icicles... He still hasn't finished my bandages, yet I'm more bandage than flesh and bones at this point! He also took care of the worst cuts he has, I suppose most of them are remnants from the one on one bear fight. Couldn't he have just picked me up and ran back outside? I know the rest was nearby, but fighting such a beast all by yourself is insanity, well... I thought as much, before the leader and Pierre showed me just how strong humans can get!
A couple of hours later, everyone is fully treated, but Pierre is still out cold, if that beam hit him on the head, it's not surprising he went down, all we can do is just keep him warm and hope for the best. As dusk has already long passed, we call it a day and snuggle up in the carriage. Both our blankets are put on top of Pierre and Leo, who seems to be their medic, sits next to him on that side of the carriage as the rest of us have to sleep sitting right next to each other, at least it's nice and warm.
My spot is between the leader Thomas and the coachman Henry. The only thing between me and the door is Henry? I don't know if I could easily sneak past him if I wanted to escape, but surely they trust me way too much?!
I awaken from a sudden cold sneaking inside the carriage, the leader is no longer sitting next to me. I'll just go back to sleep and leave him to it, he probably has a lot on his mind right now and I don't think he needs my help there. Except if you open the door, the carriage actually holds on to our heat very well, the seating are also made out of high quality furs and seem to be very well maintained. I easily drift back into sleep. The muscle fatigue and injuries got me very tired, I barely woke up, and feel extremely drowsy, as if I only woke up halfway and am still half asleep.
I wake up to August passing by me on his way to the door. As the morning sun fills our carriage with light, I can feel something warm on my shoulder...
Why is the coachman drooling on me?!
As I am in the middle of my morning routine a few hundred meters further, I can hear a lot of relieved shouting in the distance, I suppose our princess finally decided to wake up, huh?
I'm not almost crying, you're crying!
I thought the guy wouldn't make it through, so I can't help getting at least a little emotional when I find out he's okay!
Honestly, they don't even care if I leave, do they? After my 2km walk, I finish off with some pullups on a nearby tree. I used to have a designated branch at perfect height and angle at home.
Out here, I used whatever reachable branch I found after my run, didn't go as well, but at least it's a lot better than skipping my routine, which I already did yesterday. I usually go for a run instead of a walk, but when I told them I was going for a run, Leo gave me a flick against my forehead, claiming "I ain't fixing your leg up again if you open the wound!"
From the limited time I know him, he's too good for his own good, so he probably wouldn't even complain while fixing it.
Shortly after I get back, we have breakfast, all seven of us. together on a wide stretch of grass with sight on the village. The straw roofs have started thawing, except for the holes in walls and lack of life, people who visit a week from now probably won't be able to tell the place was occupied by magic beasts.
Thomas interrupts me as I'm stuffing my face with all the bread I got for breakfast with an announcement and apology.
"Good morning friends, I know this fight didn't go very well, and as it was me who failed on multiple fronts, I want to apologise to all of you. I have looked back on my decisions and promise I'll learn from them to not get us stuck in such a situation next time. We all made it out in mostly one piece, but we all know this could have ended way worse."
He swallows heavily, then takes a breath before continuing in a more formal tone.
"The bear got away, and was way stronger than our information suggested.
I would like to ask you all to thoroughly think this through and share what you think we should do about the bear.
As the people who are most likely to be heavily impacted by this decision, I would like to suggest Leo, Pierre and Francis get to go first, followed by Henry, August, then Andy and I."
"I feel very extremely bad for the people living in this area, but considering the bear has proven to be a leader of completely unrelated magic beasts, I don't think we can sort out the possibility that it finds new allies before we can track it down. Our current condition is also not favourable, considering both our people with first aid knowledge are in a bad condition before the fight even starts. I say we report it, but do not take chase."
"Francis, I know you're new to the team, but I do think you have earned the right to cast your vote"
Why did I have to be one of the first to answer? Am I supposed to give a super detailed answer like Leo did? Because I'm really not that good with words.
"Ehhrr... ... I think you were winning the fight before the bear fled, a-and I think I should be able to fight even with my leg like this, the healing stuff worked really well! I say we go after the bear before it can form a new group with other beasts"
"What about you Pierre? You can keep it short if you want"
"Leave it"
I know Thomas said to keep it short, but that is very to the point, if he had his turn before me, I wouldn't have had to anxiously
"Henry?"
"The area around here has a lot of woodlands, we would have to either split up or leave our carriage and ox behind unprotected. If magic beasts, thugs, or other threats were attracted by the sound of the fighting or the giant magic beam, we will lose our transport, which in term will make us reach other missions later. Considering the strength of the bear, not to mention the amount of injured people, I have to vote against fighting it."
"August?"
"As much as I would like to take revenge on that bear for embarrassing us in front of the new kid, I'm not entirely sure we can pull it off without at least a few major injuries. If the bear does find other magic beasts, we might even lose someone, which would absolutely beat the purpose of following it..."
"I also vote against, there's just too many risks"
Couldn't he wait for his turn? I'm fairly certain August still wanted to say more.
"That concludes the vote, we will report to the nearby samurai, hopefully they can send a messenger on horseback to the local lord, who might be able to gather a group of mercenaries or samurai to take the bear out. I would also have voted against, in case anyone wondered.
My heart goes out to all those who lost or might lose a loved one to this bear, but I don't want our squad to fall amongst it's victims because we were too stubborn."
Okay, the bear sure as hell is strong, but are they all saying we should just run away from the fight with our tails between our legs?
Aren't they supposed to be the warriors who save the people from magic beasts and bandits alike?
