Chapter 18:

Escape

The Brainwashing of Becca Sunshine

Becca jolted awake.

She sat up, gasping.

She looked across the cage.

Art was waking up in his bed, wet.

The thin woman was hovering over him with a towel, patting him dry of his emission.

Becca looked on jealously.

Art looked at the thin woman.

Then he looked at Becca.

-Clinical, he thought to Becca. She doesn’t matter.

-Just us, Becca thought back.

Art shoved the thin woman away.

-Get off me.

He sat up from his bed and tried to get up, stumbling to the floor.

He crawled across the cold cage floor to Becca’s bed.

-Mine.

Becca slid off her bed and met him on the floor.

Art wrapped his arms around her. He buried his face in her neck, inhaling her.

-Anchor.

Becca held him. She ran her fingers through his damp hair.

-I'm here.

The thin woman watched them. She signaled the Amazons.

-Cover them.

They threw a heavy wool blanket over them.

Under the wool, the world vanished.

Art wrapped his legs around her. He pulled her into a tight, frantic embrace.

-Home, he said. Do you want to go home?

Becca nodded against his chest.

-Yes.

Art threw the blanket off.

He stood up. He steadied himself on Becca’s shoulder..

He looked at the thin woman.

-Fetch the clothes, he commanded. And bring the car out front.

The thin woman hesitated, but left.

She returned with Becca’s clothes, throwing them at their feet.

Art got down to help her gather them and get her dressed carefully.

-Mine too, he said. I’m leaving.

The thin woman sucked her teeth and left to retrieve his clothing, bringing it to him and getting on her knees to help him with his trousers.

Art looked at Becca.

He leaned down to swat the thin woman’s hand away, his exposed member smacking her face on the way down, before pulling the pants up himself.

-I don't need you, he said.

Becca smiled.

-Come, he said as he took her hand.

They walked out of the cage, out of the suite and out of the compound.

The same black car was waiting.

Art went to the back door, then opened the passenger side instead.

He helped Becca in. She pulled him in after her, into his lap. He kissed her before rolling over into the the driver's seat.

He looked at her.

-Ready? he asked

-Drive, Becca said, hanging on to his arm.

Art hit the gas.

They left the compound in the rearview mirror.

Two monsters, finally free.
