Chapter 18:

A Crazy Suggestion

Draconic Verse

The Creature reared into view, the Bookworm looked to the fire engine driving beside them and screamed an order into the walkie talkie.

“Fire!”

“Which kind…?”

“Oh real funny wise guy!”

The Bookworm stuck his head out the car window and pointed to the lava monster, in response a blast of pressurised water hit the creature. It moved out of range of said water, which meant more damage couldn’t be done, but they at least now had a path through. It seemed they were quite vulnerable to water despite their imposing size.

It’s too bad there’s no rain on the forecast, now THAT would be nice… Or maybe not? I mean if it were raining maybe the Dragon would bring out something else? Actually that still brings up the question of why choose these monsters in particular, given their absurdly exploitable weakness, but what do I know? Maybe it’s just a dragon thing.

The creatures made a point of staying as far away as possible from the fire engines now, but at first they did not seem to care much. Somehow they had learned the danger fire engines posed to them and communicated this threat to the rest of the group.

Well I guess I can’t complain, at least we know for a fact they have a weakness. It’s a real good thing these fire engines can hold small tanks of water, but I don’t know how long these tanks will last.

He could not afford to worry about this now, the group had a goal, and the Bookworm looked to the person in his rearview, and asked a question to ease his worries somewhat.

“Are you sure this is the right way?”

The Silent Officer Nodded to the No-Longer-Frightened-But-Still-Quite-Worried Officer, she had run into the Bookworm and his group after escaping the forest just as it began to burn brightly. After getting her to some measure of safety and speaking to her at length, she offered to use her homing device to bring them to the cave.

“I know a bit about those homing thingies, and I can tell you’re bringing us to the left of its trajectory.”

The No-Longer-Worried-But-Now-Suspicious Officer raised his accusation, to which the Silent Officer sighed in response. Annoyed at the seemingly foolish question.

“Well, is there a reason?”

She looked to the No-Longer-Worried-But-Now-Quite-Suspicious Officer and Bookworm, both of whom were giving her a look as they expected some sort of answer.

“You’ll think I’m crazy.”

She had not spoken much, so it was a shock to them both to hear her sound, and for it to be so apologetically frank.
