Chapter 4:

PART III : CHAOS

CONGRATULATIONS, TAEKO-SAN

Lights popped and shattered in the darkness. Children and adults were struck with falling glass. Students tried their best to get out of their seats and run, but they couldn't. It was too dark to see where you were going.
In the darkness, Misato and Hinata heard Kana's scream through the sea of others. A piece of glass had sunk its way into her head. "Kana?...Kana?! Grab my arm!" Hina cried out, holding out her forearm. Kana had stopped making noises so it was hard to find her in the darkness. Misato didn't know what to do. She couldn't see either so she couldn't help. More glass kept falling, hitting Hinata, Kana, and Misato. The large shards were falling into the crowd of students. No one knew what to do: either save themselves or the possibly injured people around them. As Misato was trying to decide, she felt herself being pulled by someone. "Was it Kana? Or Hina?", she thought. The person pulling her dragged her off the stage into the sea of screaming and hurt children.

Misato slid past young girls and teachers who were also trying to get out. Some bloody and some crying. Some on the floor and some screaming. Misato could only hear the mayhem around her. Yet it was still as terrifying just hearing the screams.
Light pierced through an opening in the thought-to-be sealed-off gym and Misato was thrown out to the other side. The person who'd been gripping Misato's arm--who was revealed to be Kyoko Hanamori-- threw herself and one of the four girls from earlier out as well. As the door was closing, some students escaped the dark death trap. But only a small percentage were able to get out. The door was too heavy to open again. Kyoko had tired herself out from dragging an adult, a student, and herself through a crowd of hurt students. Along with pushing the door open.
Even if they tried to open the doors again, it wouldn't open. Not just because it was heavy, but it was something else.

Something was holding the door shut.

Kyoko was on the floor with the student from before while Misato had gotten up. The girls that had gotten out all ran for the exit, but once they got there, it wouldn't open. It was never locked during school hours or during an event, so why would it be locked now?, Misato thought.

It's not locked.
What? No, it's locked.
It's not locked, Misato.
What other explanation would there be?
You know the other reason why it wouldn't open, Misato.
I don't.
Yes, you do, Misato.
What even are you..? Why are you in my head?
...

...Who are you?
Check the roof, Misa-chan.

"...Ito-san!" Misato came back to reality. Kyoko grabbed the girl she'd saved from the chaos and grabbed Misato as well. "This is not the time to be spacing out!" Kyoko said, running with the younger girl over her back.
Misato looked back at the two doors and ran towards them. She pulled and pulled on the handles, but it wouldn't open. "Ito-san, come on! We have to find a phone!" Kyoko shouted.
"...Kana and Hinata are in there! Why didn't you get them?!"
"They can save themselves!"
"Why the hell did you save me?! Kana is hurt! You should've saved her!"
"Misato-"
"Just let me try, okay?! They would've tried for me!" Tears flowed down Misato's cheeks as she tugged at the two doors. The screams of the children inside only made her more desperate to get the door open. She wanted to help.
She wanted to do some good at this school.
She wanted to erase the bad things that she'd done.
Minutes that felt like hours passed as the door stayed in its place. Misato's hands had numbed from pulling on the cold handles of the door.

"Ito-san...come on."

Without protesting, Misato let go of the handles and followed Kyoko.

The three made it to an empty classroom. Aside from the tables and chairs, of course.
"What are we doing in here?" Misato asked, wiping her tears. Kyoko heard her but chose not to answer. She set down the student she'd saved from the gymnasium on the floor and slid off her navy blue dress coat, covering the girl with it. "Hanamori-san, what are you-"
"Gimme a second." The former class president was looking for a phone. Kyoko went up to the teacher's stand and started searching for a phone. "There used to be a phone in this stupid thing..."
Misato chuckled. "It's been 10 years since you've been in this classroom, Hanamori-san. They've obviously changed up the rooms since you've graduated."
Kyoko didn't laugh. Instead, she got up from her knees and headed towards the door. "Hey, where are you-"
"I'm going to search the other classrooms for a phone." She said, swiftly leaving the classroom right after.

Misato sighed, wondering if she should help Kyoko. Misato peeked out into the hallway to see Kyoko ransacking a classroom, looking for a corded phone.
She seems fine, she thought. A small groan could be heard from underneath Kyoko's navy blue dress coat. Misato flinched at the sound.
It was Rin Rinko. In the gym during the chaos, she'd been shoved to the ground and it showed. Her glasses were smashed and her face was cut from the broken glass. Misato felt bad for the girl. She knelt down, took off Rinko's glasses, and picked out some small glass shards from her cheeks.

Kyoko came back into the room after a while, exhausted. She couldn't find a phone anywhere. There wasn't a wall phone or a corded phone on that floor of the school. The woman exhaled sharply, sliding down a wall. She then took off her shoes and buried her face in her knees. Misato approached Kyoko.

"Are you doing alright?"
Kyoko groaned. The two sat in silence for a bit before Misato took off her shoes and sat down next to her upperclassman. "The doors are locked and there aren't any phones around... Not to mention there are still girls in the gym that are probably hurt..." Kyoko said, gripping her leggings. "Obviously people are hurt. The lights popped." Misato said jokingly. Kyoko still didn't laugh.

The lights flickered for a bit then switched off, leaving the three in darkness.
