Chapter 26:

The Second Mission: The Demon Cult Appears

The Otaku Mage

A door opened and someone came in. Kuro could not ascertain how many, only that it must be multiple. He noticed light coming through the slits of the closet, Hinako and he were cramped into.

“Shit, did another one of those bastards escape? You! Check the cavern out!”, One said angrily.

Fast footsteps were heard.

“It didn’t get far! It triggered the trap and burned to ashes it seems!”, Another shouted from farer away.

“Good… don’t want any more of them escaping… Bad enough that a few got out weeks ago and we have now some MDF pigs in one of the resorts. Good thing those fuckers are so damn lazy and just sit in the water all day. Last thing we want is them finding this place.”

Why do they know, we’re here? Our identity should have been secret, since the owner of the resort didn’t want it to be known, that there was a… problem…, Kuro thought.

“Bad enough that this Gaijin Motherfucker ruined our plans in Shibuya and put our plan behind schedule!”

Oh, so these guys are from the same cult, huh…

Kuro felt Hinako squirm under him.

“But he and all those pigs at the MDF will get what they deserve soon enough! And they have no idea it’s even coming.”

They all laughed sinisterly.

Now, that is some interesting piece of info…

Kuro felt Hinako squirm again. Kuro tried to gesture to her to be quiet.

“Stop breathing down my neck!”, She whispered very quietly.

“I can’t my head is stuck like this!”, Kuro whispered back.

That made Hinako squirm even more.

“Did you hear that? What was that?”, exclaimed one of the guys outside.

“It came from over there!”, another one said.

The footsteps got closer to their hiding place. Hinako squirmed again.

“Now be a good girl and stop squirming so much!”, Kuro whispered directly into her ear.

“Eeek!”, Hinako let out an involuntary shriek and pulled her head away violently, crashing against the door of the closet.

It swung open and she stumbled out. Kuro stepped after her and looked at the perplexed faces of seven men standing a few meters away from them. They were all clad in black robes.

“Oh… umm… hello there…”, Kuro said with a smirk.

“Who the fuck are you and what are you doing here?”, One of the men shouted.

“Would you believe me, if I tell you that we got lost trying to find a toilet?”

They all immediately started to cast spells and a heartbeat later seven greenish bolts flew towards Kuro. With a waving motion he redirected them into the wall behind him.

“Figured, you won’t believe me…”, Kuro said with a smile.

“That’s the gaijin MDF fucker!”, Another one of the men exclaimed.

Then they all scrambled backwards, took cover behind tables and began to bombard him with spells. Kuro redirected most of them and the few that got past and hit him, didn’t show any effect. The next barrage was pointed at Hinako instead. She was still scrambling to her feet. Kuro lunged in front of her, blocking the spells. Then he grabbed Hinako and shoved her behind a table. She looked at him with a bright red face.

“Snap out of it already, kid! Or you’ll end up dead.”, Kuro grumbled.

He then let one of his signature pebbles appear over the palm of his hand and shot it right at one of the cultists, who quickly cast a barrier. Kuro’s projectile crashed against it, but the defensive wall held true. Kuro raised an eyebrow.

„See that? That’s the kind of barrier I want you to be able to cast! Not whatever the flimsy thing is that you conjure up all the time!”, He said to Hinako.

That remark made her snap out of her daze.

“Fuck you!”, Hinako hissed and glared at him.

She then turned towards the cultist and took out her magical discharger. Then the battle began for real. Spells, bolts and shots were lob from one side to the other. The cultists were rather adept to fighting together, Kuro thought, as part of them focused on defensive magic, while the other kept bombarding him and Hinako with spells. A blue icicle suddenly hit him in the side and shattered. Kuro looked surprised in the direction where the projectile had come from. He spotted that four new cultists had entered from a different door and took cover near the altar. They started to surround them. Normally Kuro would rely on his magical sensing abilities to keep track in such a chaotic fight, but to his annoyance the interference was still there.

“Freeze!”, One of the new cultists near the altar shouted and a blue ray shot across the room, right at Hinako.

She rolled to the side at the last moment. The place where the blue ray hit, froze immediately. Hinako looked at the newcomer and extended her arm.

“Have a fireball!”, she rumbled and shot one towards them.

The fireball hit the table and the two cultists behind it got flung right at the altar.

Kuro, who had watched the short exchange began to smile, as it reminded him of something.

“Doom.”, He said as he snapped his finger.

Hinako turned towards him, after she dogdged another magic bolt and looked confused.

“Doom? What do you mean doom?”, She exclaimed panicked.

“I saw that in a video once and wanted to try it out sometime.”, Kuro said with a smile as a black sphere appeared right at the altar.

It grew and began to suck everything up in the vicinity. As the skull flew into the sphere a loud cracking sound could be heard, followed by a detonation. The shockwave knocked some of the other cultist off their feet and the vats cracked, letting the liquid and bodies in them flow out. From the altar, the two cultists next to it and the skull was nothing left anymore, which meant the interference was gone as well.

“What have you done! You destroyed the Relict!”, One of the other cultists screamed.

“Oh, sorry. Was that important?”, Kuro yelled back laughing.

He shot a rock at him, smashing the defense barrier and ripping of half of his face. The dead body slumped backwards and hit the ground. The fighting got even more intense afterwards. Hinako jumped behind another table and held her own against three cultists at once, while Kuro bombarded the rest with his rocks. They got pushed back further. Two went down, hit by Kuro’s rocks. Hinako got one with a well-placed firebolt directly in the face and the other had lost an arm, after getting hit from her magical discharger. Kuro felt that more enemies approached from another door again and readied a welcome gift. He simultaneously attacked all of the already present cultist with a barrage of smaller rocks as he flung a bigger and pointier one at the opening door, immediately piercing through two of the newly arriving opponents. Countless magic bolts flew towards him in reply. Kuro let a few rocks circle around him and blocked the shots with them, which caused small explosions and he got enveloped in smoke, momentarily robbing him of sight. Kuro conjured up a small gust of wind to blow it away. He noticed that two of the cultists ran towards the door, leading to the big cavern, where Hinako and he had come from.

“Where do you think you’re going?”, Kuro yelled and shot two of his projectiles after them.

One of them turned and blocked them with a barrier. And before Kuro could shoot the next one, they disappeared through the door. He cursed and moved to follow them but got pinned down by shots from the other cultist.

“I’ll take them!”, Hinako yelled.

Her hair was blazing red as she rushed past Kuro.

“No, wait!”, He shouted after her, but she was already through the door.

Kuro wanted to follow her, but the remaining cultist didn’t let up. One spell after another crashed against one of the circling stones around him. Some even went through and hit him but didn’t cause any visible damage.

“Ah, fuck this! Enough with trying to capture some of you fucks alive!”, Kuro growled.

His began to glow a bit, as he extended both of his arms to the side. New rocks formed around him, but this time they had purple veins running through them. Like before he shot them against the cultist, but unlike before they exploded on impact, ripping through defensive barriers and flesh like it was butter. The ensuing screaming was like music to Kuro’s ears. Some had the presence of mind to dodge out of the way instead of trying to block and flung some counterattack spells. Kuro didn’t even bother to block or evade. They just collided with his body effectless. Kuro swung his right leg back and kicked into the ground in front of him. It looked like something dug through the floor from the point of impact towards the still remaining cultist. In the next moment a stalagmite shot up under everyone and impaled them.

“Just hang around there for a while, will ya?”, Kuro said with a dark smile on his face.

He then turned towards the door, through which the two cultist and Hinako had gone. A magic bolt hit his side, before he could reach it. Kuro turned slowly in the direction the spell had come from. One of the cultists lay on the floor, missing one of his leg. He raised his arm and pointed it at Kuro.

“All hail to our Master Morthos!”, he screamed from the top of his lungs and cast another bolt.

Kuro swatted the spell away like it was a harmless fly. He then let a golf ball sized rock appear in front of him and snipped it with his right middle finger. The rock accelerated and a loud bang echoed through the hall, shattering all the glass equipment that was not yet in pieces, as the projectile broke the sound barrier before colliding with the chin of the cultist. The head vanished and only left a smear of blood and brain mass on the floor and wall behind the beheaded torso. With the last cultist down, Kuro could finally follow Hinako.
