Chapter 9:
En Passant Grandmaster Volume 4
As the lunch hour rolled around, a woman with long red hair, clad in a purple cloak looked around as she arrived at the food court in a mall in Yokohama. "Ugh, why'd mother send me all the way here? I get Zinnia could complicate some political stuff, but forcing me to take care of it? Ugh. Emmie's plan better work, because I don't wanna be stuck waiting here all day if they won't show up," she thought as she spied a fried chicken restaurant, and walked towards it.
No sooner did the woman place an order did she spot Mimoko, Carol, and Iori walking by.
"A bit out of the blue to call me on a trip to Yokohama, but school's optional today and there's no major tournaments so I was free. What's the occasion?" Mimoko asked.
"Ah, a sub said she'd gift like a million dollars if we came here and filmed ourselves eating taiyaki in front ," Iori grinned.
"That sounds farfetched, and don't the rules say you can't film in here?"
Both Iori and Carol exchanged mischievous grins. "That's the challenge; we don't get caught!"
Mimoko covered her face with her hand and shook her head.
The red-haired woman, meanwhile, began anxiously tapping her foot as she waited for her food to come. "Hurry, HURRY! I need fresh chicken bones for the ritual! If I lose sight of them-"
"Thank you for waiting! Here's your order of six drum-"
Snatching the tray as fast as she could, the woman began voraciously devouring the chicken drum sticks on the spot, earning her the unwanted attention of many. Once she finished, she scoured around and spotted Carol with her back turned to her just a little ways off.
"Good! I don't care about all the prying eyes. Eliminating Zinnia is the primary objective!" the woman thought as she set the tray down on a table and began arranging the bones in a pattern.
She then pulled out a vile of blood and poured it over the chicken bones just as Carol turned to notice her.
"TOO LATE! You're not close enough to disrupt the incantation!" the woman thought as she began reciting an incantation.
Carol suddenly went blue in the face and began coughing violently as one of the chicken bones on the plate began to vanish. But before the woman could finish the incantation, a punch to the face sent her sprawling out of her seat to the floor.
With the incantation disrupted, Carol returned to normal as the vanishing chicken bone fully materialized back on the plate. The woman grimaced in pain as she clutched her bleeding jaw and slowly began to pick herself up. But before she could, she found Iori, Mimoko, and Carol hovering above her.
"Wow, looked like you really were trying to pull some witchcraft on Cece-chan. Care to explain why?" Iori glared.
"I'd like to know too, Lynessa. Why are you here, and why are you after me?" Carol frowned as she confiscated the chicken bones.
"How-"
"With how loudly you were devouring that chicken, we just had to notice. But then Cece-chan got freaked out and said you do shit with chicken bones and to hit you before you could finish an incantation. No clue what she meant, but I guess this is what it was. So what's your beef with her?"
Lynessa's eyes widened as she suddenly recognized Iori. "YOU! You were the one from the video I was shown! I should eliminate you too!" she cried as she suddenly whipped out an old chicken bone from her mantle.
Both Iori and Carol got defensive as Mimoko slowly approached Lynessa. "And are you the one who made that million dollar bet?"
"No? But... you're with them... right?"
Before Mimoko could react, Lynessa wrapped her arm around her, holding a chicken bone up to her neck. "Nobody move, or I warp this bone inside her throat and she chokes to death!"
"Huh? What do you-"
"Iori-chan, her power allows her to warp a fresh chicken bone into the throat of her target, however, she must be within a 30 meter radius of her target, nor can her incantation be interrupted. Unless, she's at point blank range," Carol trembled.
"THEN I can just shove it right in! Seems I need to give a demonstration!" Lynessa cackled.
However, nothing happened.
"Huh? This should work. Hmm, maybe with the incantation. Chicken bone, chicken bone, chicken bone, chick. I summon old chicken bones to invade thy throat!"
Still nothing.
Sweat began to form on Lynessa's face. "WHY ISN'T IT WORKING!?"
"Uh, can you not see the turquoise glow?" Iori grumbled.
Lynessa slowly turned to notice the chicken bone she had pressed against Mimoko's neck seemed to be blocked from penetrating it by a turquoise barrier. "Caïssa's blessing!?"
"You know of it?"
Lynessa gritted her teeth and pulled out a DESPER. "I hate using this thing, but it's the one guaranteed attack I've got!"
"Then I'll accept the challenge," Mimoko glared as she managed to free herself from Lynessa's grasp.
"Sorry, but Zinnia's my target, so I'll be-"
But before she could finish, Mimoko whipped out a DESPER key and pointed it at Lynessa, activating her DESPER. "So you're a Desperado, then. Glad Iori-chan gave me one of these beforehand. I'll take you on in a normal bout of chess," Mimoko glared as a chessboard materialized at the table.
Lynessa went pale as she found herself forced to walk to the table, but her anxiety only grew further upon seeing the pieces. "T- These aren't Spell Chess pieces..."
"Spell Chess?"
Lynessa gritted her teeth and began to tremble. "I only focus on Spell Chess... I was gonna beat Zinnia..."
"'Zinnia'? Who are you talking about?" Mimoko asked as she opened the game by moving her pawn to d4.
Lynessa began trembling, but quickly calmed down and moved her knight to f6. "Calm down. Chess is just Spell Chess without the spells. I know how to at least play decently," she thought as Mimoko moved her bishop to f4. "Upon my victory, you shall suffer a death of chocking on 1000 chicken bones," she cackled as she moved her pawn to d5.
Mimoko simply glared and moved her knight to f3 as Iori and Carol watched things play out.
"I think Mimo-chan's gonna win," Iori whispered as Lynessa moved her pawn to c5.
"Oh, she's doing a London. I saw a vid that said Londons were unstoppable," Carol nodded as Mimoko moved her pawn to e3.
Despite Iori's confidence, the game remained even as Lynessa moved her knight to c6 and Mimoko moved her b-knight to d2. But after Lynessa moved her queen to a5, Mimoko pounced on the misstep by moving her pawn to c3.
"Tch, go forth, foul king," Lynessa scoffed as she moved her king to d7.
"Uh, and what was that move supposed to be?" Mimoko glared as she captured the pawn at c5 with her d-pawn.
"I am merely putting the frail king to use as I believe everything should be put to use," Lynessa huffed as she captured the pawn at c5 with her queen.
"That's not a bad philosophy per say, but moving the king does have risks," Mimoko sighed as she moved her knight to c4.
"And just who do you think you are lecturing me!? You have no right! I'm the master of chicken bone witch craft and I am good at Spell Chess and have a rating of 664!" Lynessa glared as she moved her pawn to h5.
"And I'm a grandmaster with a rating of 2750," Mimoko glared back as she moved her pawn to b4.
"Huh?"
Lynessa's confidence shattered like glass as sweat began flooding down her face. "G- G- G- GRANDMASTER!? No way, NO WAY! She's gotta be bluffing. Yes, there's no way some plain-looking girl- BUT WAIT! She has Caïssa's blessing. Nah, Every WWCF official has it grandmaster or not! She can't be- ...!"
Lynessa's thoughts skidded to a halt as she realized her queen was screwed. Even if she moved it to the only safe square, b5, it wouldn't be safe for long as Mimoko would simply deliver a check by moving her c-knight to e5, allowing her bishop to deliver the coup de gras to her queen. Thus, Lynessa nervously captured the pawn at b4 with her queen, hoping Mimoko wouldn't recapture, yet capture the queen with her c-pawn was exactly what Mimoko did.
Lynessa began going pale and desperately moved her pawn to b5, yet Mimoko simply moved her c-knight to e5, delivering a check and prompting Lynessa to capture said knight with her knight.
"Check," Mimoko stated as she captured the pawn at b5 with her bishop, completely blindsiding Lynessa, causing her to panic and move her king to e6. "Perhaps if you reconcile with Carol-chan, I'll be able to give you some pointers on how to improve your game," Mimoko sighed as she moved her knight to d4.
"'Reconcile'!? She needs to die for the good of the Broadstone family! Otherwise our legacy will be forever tainted!" Lynessa fumed as she moved her king to d6.
"Hmm? I'm not sure I follow. But couldn't you just disown her," Mimoko suggested as she moved her queen to c2.
"I thought we did, but then orders came in, so she has to die. Never could use magic anyway, so I've got no qualms eliminating her. And when I win... When I win..."
Lynessa began to trail off as she realized there was nothing she could do to stop the checkmate. "Y- You're just going to tutor me when I lose, right?" she nervously smiled as she moved her rook to h7.
"I'll tell you what you did wrong during this match, but after that, I think you need to spend some time in the WWCF holding facility. Checkmate," Mimoko scowled as she moved her queen to c5, winning the game.
The board slowly vanished, yet Lynessa found herself unable to leave, as just as Mimoko promised, she was going to lecture her on all the mistakes she made during the game.
As that happened, Lynessa took notice of the fact that Iori was seemingly filming. "Um, why are you filming?"
"Uh, I've been streaming ever since we saw you snarfing down the chicken," Iori scoffed.
Slowly, Lynessa's hair began to fall out as her skin was consumed with paleness and sweat. "F- F- FILMED FROM THE START!? Mother Salem... Mother Salem's gonna kill me," she trembled as tears oozed out of her eyes.
"Nobody's going to kill you. But once this lecture is done, it's off to the WWCF holding facility where you'll likely recieve a harsh sentence," Mimoko grumbled.
Once the lecture was done, Lynessa, now sporting a massive bald patch on the back of her head thanks to all the stress she was under, was warped away to WWCF HQ. There, her troubles only got worse as in addition to the sentence she received, Ai took notice of her bald patch, and decided to shave her completely bald on the spot in order to make her "look more clean and orderly".
Now clad in a prison jumpsuit and completely hairless, Lynessa sobbed as she sat in her cell. "Ah, I never should have gone along with mother's scheme. They're always crafted with the intent of usurping power from Mother Salem, with no regards given to those other than mother herself," she thought.
