Chapter 15:
Kanojo wa Koe dake - A Love Beyond the Screen
It was Friday and the last day of school. The alarm rang and Haruto woke up as his little sister Yumeko entered his room.
"Ah, you're awake. I thought I could wake you up again today," she said.
Ren yawned and rubbed the sleep out of his eyes.
"No, I'm awake, Yumeko."
"That's what I noticed myself, Ren-chan, you don't have to state the obvious."
"Sorry, I'm still sleepy because of last night."
"What have you done?" Yumeko asked curiously.
"I was texting until midnight with Fujimoto-san."
"Huh? Since when do you have her phone number and didn't tell me right away?" Yumeko was surprised. Her brother told her literally everything.
"I got her number yesterday, and after I arrived at home, I saw that you were soo focused on the TV that I didn't want to interrupt you, so I texted with her for sooo long that you were already asleep and mom and dad were home."
"Wow, you could've just told me anyway. Yes, I was focused on the TV but you know well enough, at least I thought so, that you can interrupt me anytime you want because you're my beloved big brother, Ren-chan, and I don't care if it's you who interrupts me."
"Okay, I'll keep that in mind for next time."
"I hope so! Hmph!" Yumeko started pouting and turned her back to Ren. Then she walked out of the room and went into her room.
Speaking of texting with Airi, Ren thought, and grabbed his phone. Yes, there was a message, just like he thought.
Fujimoto-san: "Good morning Sato-kun! I'm looking forward to seeing you again today!"
That was the text message Ren had to read first in the morning. His heart skipped a beat out of joy. He never thought that he would get such a message someday. Especially from a girl. To be fair, he even thought that he would never have a girlfriend in the first place so the whole situation was a little mind-blowing for him.
He texted back: "Good morning Fujimoto-san. I'm looking forward to today as well!"
He sent the message with a winking emoji. Then he grabbed his school uniform and was about to go to the bathroom when he received another text message from Airi. Ren grabbed his phone as well and looked at the chat with Airi while he went into the bathroom.
Airi sent a heart emoji and wrote something. Then he received the text she was writing while he looked at the chat.
Fujimoto-san: "You can call me Airi-chan if you want. I don't mind. But only if I can call you Ren-chan as well. And did you sleep well?"
Ren took off his pajamas and texted her back.
"I would rather call you Airi-san for now but you can call me what you want. I told you that before. And I slept well but I didn't get enough sleep."
Then he put on his school uniform and freshened up. He walked out of the bathroom and into the kitchen where he ate the pancakes his sister made for him. They were delicious as always and while Ren ate the pancakes, he was texting with Airi.
Fujimoto-san: "Oh, that's my fault I guess but it was such a nice conversation we had yesterday. Is our plan still set for today?"
Ren: "Yes, after school we both go home and then at five o'clock I come to your place and we play some video games."
Fujimoto-san: "Yes, that's right. I'm going to school now so see you there!"
Airi wrote with a heart emoji again.
Ren: "Okay, I'm leaving soon too, so see you later."
And with that the conversation was closed and Ren finished his breakfast and went into his room, packed all his school stuff together and then left the house. He sat on his bike and rode to the intersection where Haruto and Ren met every day to go to school together.
Ren was arriving early today. Perhaps because he couldn't wait to see Airi.
He didn't have to wait long until Haruto finally arrived.
"Hey, good morning Ren! How's your day going so far?" Haruto greeted Ren.
"Pretty good and yours?" Ren asked him back.
"Oh, my day is as good as ever."
"Fujimoto-san and I are texting pretty much since we exchanged phone numbers yesterday."
"Oh, that sounds good," Haruto sighed reminiscingly, "It must be nice to be in love."
"But I'm not really in love with her. She's in love with me."
"You're not in love with her? WITH HER?! You have to explain that to me." Haruto looked at him in disbelief.
"Well I really like her and I feel warmth around her and that my heart races a bit more than usual but I don't think it's love yet. It will be at some point but I think, for now, that I only like her very much." Ren explained.
"Hmmm, but it all sounds like you are in love with her. I don't see why you shouldn't be in love with her. You really like her, you feel warm when you're with her and your heart races a bit. I mean you're scared by your old wounds that were left by these "friends" of yours but I still, I would say that you're in love with her." Haruto replied.
"Hmm, I thought it would feel different. I can't really feel these butterflies they all talk about when you're in love."
"Ohhh, so that's what you mean. Yeah, don't worry. They will come soon enough."
The two kept talking until they arrived at the school gate. Airi was already waiting there for them.
"Heyoo Ren-chan! I already waited for you!" She said. Everyone around her looked at her. Of course they did. What did she just call him? They were all in disbelief. Ren-chan?
"Hey, hey, hey, Fujimoto-san." Haruto said while running toward her to be able to talk quietly with her.
"You know Ren-san and you know that he doesn't like much attention. Rumors about you two wouldn't help either so please don't call him that out loud. What you two lovebirds do in private is your thing but as one of the popular girls from our school you have to hold back a little. At least ask Ren-san before you call him out like that and before you bring him in such a situation."
Ren was now standing beside them and listened to what Haruto told her.
"Oh, if that's the case I'm truly sorry Ren-chan. I didn't want to make you feel uncomfortable." Airi apologized to Ren.
"It's fine Airi-san. That's something that could happen to anyone, so don't worry about it too much. But I have to say that it's really creepy how everyone around us stares at us like the eighth wonder of the world." The people around them began to whisper and murmur to each other.
"Yeah, that's no wonder because the quiet and, sorry to say that Ren, weird guy got nicknamed by one of the most popular girls at school so of course everyone wonders what's going on here. And that's what I'm saying. I can understand you two and that you love each other but I think it would be best to hide your relationship for a while before you come out with it."
"Okay." Airi and Ren said at the same time.
Then, the first school bell rang and put an end to the turmoil because it reminded everyone that class would start in ten minutes. So everyone started to go inside but the people were still talking with each other and with no doubt it was about Airi and Ren.
It was the last day of school and so the students of Midoridai High only had three lessons. In the first lesson, they had a normal lesson like usual, in the second lesson, they had a lesson with their homeroom teacher who gave out the school reports and the points they achieved in the first third of the trimester, and in the third lesson, they held the closing ceremony with congratulations on completing the first third of the trimester and wishes for a great summer vacation in the gymnasium. In the second lesson, Mister Tanaka thanked everyone but Airi and Ren in particular.
"Thank you class for your great work yesterday, I only heard good things about the maid café and I heard it was really popular thanks to the girls that advertised the café and the boys that made such tasty dishes for the visitors. And a special thanks to our organizers Fujimoto-san and Sato-san that realized the maid café for us by reaching the idea as fast as possible in to the student council and made a realization plan so that the class could decide, structured, what they wanted to do for the maid café and how they wanted it to do."
Everyone started applauding and Airi and Ren felt very happy.
Then, Mister Tanaka came to the points of the exams. Airi was the best this time in class with only five points away from the full one hundred percent and Ren had as always only nearly made it with fifty-five percent and was one of the worst of the class.
"And what do you have, Haruto?" Ren asked him.
"I've seventy percent." Haruto replied.
"Of course you're better than me. I'm soo jealous of you sometimes." Ren complained.
"Well, now that you're going out with the smartest girl in our class she could give you private tutoring for free, haha." Haruto suggested, winking at Ren with his right eye.
"Maybe you get private tutoring in other things as well." Haruto said, smirking.
The third lesson came and with that also the closing ceremony. It was as boring as ever. First, the teachers were praised for their excellent work, which were reflected in the exam results. Then, the student were praised as well for the wonderful summer festival again and for how hard-working many of them were. Afterwards the best student from each class were asked to come on stage in the gymnasium and got thanked and a gift for their good grates. Of course Airi was standing on stage as well. Everyone applauded for them and the closing ceremony came with the best wishes for everyone to an end. Everyone slowly left the gymnasium through the entrence and as Ren was out first with Haruto. They waited for Airi and Hana to come after.
"Hey, Sato-kun. I wanted to tell you something. It came to my mind when I stood on stage. Don't ask me why but just come with me for as second, yeah?" Airi asked Ren as she left the gymnasium with Hana.
"Okay." Ren replied and went with her.
Airi was heading to the roof again, where she confessed her love to him. As they arrived at the roof and the door closed behind them she turned around and said: "You know what? I wasn't fully honest to you. And before I continue I have to say, that you have to hear me out okay?" Airi said.
"Okay? I'm a little confused about what you mean." Ren replied.
"Yeah, well, I'm going to confess something else to you now. I don't know, maybe you already could guess it because I wasn't really good at hiding it sometimes but I am HikariAi, your favourite streamer that you love so much."
For a few seconds, there was silence but for Airi it felt like hours. But then, Ren opened his mouth.
"Hahaha, okay, yeah you lied to me but this isn't something I could be angry about Airi-san." To Airi's surprise, Ren was only laughing and wasn't mad at her. "I could guess it, yeah. You said the same greeting to your friends as HikariAi does and also today, you did the same with me. And since you said you didn't know who HikariAi was, I already thought, that you might lie to me. Also it was really strange that HikariAi was somehow always talking about things, that had happened between us as well. I thought about coincidence because I couldn't imagine that you would be in love with me and that you were therefore HikariAi but since you confessed with me yesterday and since we started going out, I thought it isn't that big of a coincidence anymore."
Airi let out a big sigh. "And I thought you could be mad at me because you hated it being lied to."
"You're right with the last thing but how could I be mad at a reasonable point. I understand that you don't want everyone to know, that you're a famous streamer on the internet. I mean, I saw your live stream chat. There are some really weird guys out there." Ren comforted her.
"Yeah, you said it. That's why I didn't want to say the truth to you but now that we're going out and now that you're coming to me today, it would be weird not to tell you that secret of mine before that."
"Thank you for letting me know. And even if we're going separate ways someday, which I hope will never happen, I will keep the secret to myself until I die."
"Aww, thank you. Yeah, I hope we stay together forever."
And after Airi said that she went toward Ren and hugged him. Then, she gave him a kiss on his right cheek which let him blush in no time. He was totally taken aback but hugged her really tight.
Then they both went downstairs again. They were the last students on the campus when they left and both went home. Airi with Hana and Ren with Haruto. Just like they always did.
"Hey, what did you two do in the building?" Haruto asked.
"We were on the roof again and she told me a secret. I don't know if I can tell it to you."
"Well, first of all, it's a secret so of course you shouldn't but I want to know it so if you want to tell it to me, I won't tell anyone else."
"Okay? Is that a promise? If the secret comes out, Airi's life would be in danger. You understand that, Haruto?"
"Of course. I can't imagine what secret she told you that endangers her life but go on and tell me."
"Airi-san is HikariAi."
"Wait. THE HikariAi?"
"Yes."
"Ah, now I get it. Yeah, even I know her and I'm not watching her. If this secret gets revealed, she would be in danger for real. I promise not to talk about it."
"Thank you. You know I trust you, so don't use this trust for something stupid."
"Yes, I know that and I'm really thankfull for your trust Ren." Haruto said.
The two until their ways separated again and Ren rode his bike home.
Ten minutes after Ren arrived at his home, Airi arrived at her home as well.
She cleaned her room and prepared some snacks for Ren and her date.
It was ten minutes before five o'clock when suddenly the door bell rang.
"Is it Ren already? He came earlier than I thought." She went to the intercom.
"Hello?" Airi asked.
"Hello, I have a delivery for you. Can I come in?"
Airi was confused. Did her parents order something? But they would normally tell her that. "Hmm, maybe they forgot it?" Airi thought.
"Okay, I open the door for you." Airi said and opened the front door and the door to her apartment. It took a while for the delivery man to climb up the stairs so Airi went back into the kitchen, which was connected to the hallway, so she could hear when someone was on their landing. As she heard him, she also heard that he went inside the hallway. Airi turned around and went into the hallway when she suddenly saw not the delivery man, but the mysterious young man from yesterday, standing in her hallway. She screamed but he quickly put his left hand on her mouth and pushed her into the living room and pressed her against the wall with his other hand on her neck. Airi was frightened. She started crying but the man just said: "Shut up. I always loved you. I was there, in every live stream you made, since the beginning. I, ShadowHeart, am the only one who deserves you! Why aren't you see the obvious?!" He was angry. No, he was crazy. Totally crazy and Airi was scared, really frightened. She didn't know what to do.
"What do you have to say?" He let go of her mouth but therefore hold tight to her neck. Airi couldn't speak. She just could sob. What was he going to do with her?
"Nothing? Hah, I hope you see that you belong to me and not to this weird dude you called boyfriend. He isn't even looking good. You deserve better than that. And that is me! Do you wonder how I could find you? I'm also from Midoridai and from what you told us in your live streams it sounded a bit like you were going to the Midoridai High. It all fit together like a puzzle for a three year old. So I went to the summer festival because it was the only time you could go on the school campus without arousing suspicion. And then I waited there. I was at this school once myself you know? So I knew when the students came to prepare for the summer festival on that day. I saw many good looking girls there but you were not like the others. They all greeted each other normally but you said your super cute greeting, which you do as HikariAi. And my suspicions rose that HikariAi was going onto the Midoridai High and that it was you!"
Since Airi started to raise her voice a bit, ShadowHeart kept her mouth shut again with is left hand.
"Don't you dare make a noise that causes troubles my love. I'm not finished. We're just getting started. I followed you around a bit and you were always walking with this 'Sato-kun'." As he said Ren's name he tried to imitade Airi's voice and formed quotation marks with his left hand which he therefore took off of Airi's mouth again. Airi still couldn't move one bit. She body felt heavy. She felt like she was a statue. There was nothing she could do.
"After the festival was over and you rejected me, I waited for the five hours until you came out of the gate in a nearby side street. And then, I finally saw you. The plan was easy: I follow you unnoticed and you show me where you live. And since you really didn't noticed me, even your best friend didn't, I'm now here to show you that I'm much better than this 'Sato-kun'." ShadowHeart did the same thing again but this time came a fist flying right at his face from the side. It was Ren's fist. He came a bit earlier than Airi thought but this time he was right on time. ShadowHeart let go of Airi and fell to the floor. Then Ren punched him another time and another time, yelling at ShadowHeart, until Airi grabbed his arm and said: "Stop it! He's already unconscious!"
Blood ran out of ShadowHeart's nose and his eyes were closed.
Ren had to take a deep breath to calm down. He took Airi into his arms and hugged her really tight. Airi broke out crying.
"Everything's okay now, everything's okay. I'm here." Ren said. He realized that the neighbours across the hall apparently noticed the noise and looked over into Airi's apartment through their open door.
"Hey!" Ren yelled across. "Please call the police! We've got an intruder here! I knocked him out but I don't know how long he will stay unconscious!"
The neighbours wife nodded and they went back inside.
After Airi calmed down a bit and wasn't crying anymore, Ren searched for something to captivate ShadowHeart. He took the initiative and borrowed one of Airi's father's ties to do so.
It took only five minutes until the police arrived. The officers went inside and found in the apartment of the Fujimoto's: one beaten up, unconscious person in his early twenties, a seventeen years old boy with marks on his knuckles and the sixteen years old resident of the apartment who was completely distraught.
"What happened here? We got called because there was an intruder here?" One of the officers asked.
"Yes, it's this guy. We don't know who he is but he said his name was ShadowHeart and that he was a follower of Fujimoto-san, on the internet." Ren tried to discribe the scene.
"So a stalker, yes?" The other officer asked.
"Yes, he followed me home yesterday and then he said he was a delivery man today and intruded my home." Airi said, still sobbing a bit.
"And why is he unconscious and beaten up?" The first officer asked Ren. "You've beaten him up right? So what happened?" Ren's heart sank. He didn't know what to say. Was he accused of something bad he did?
"He saved me!" Airi shouted. "He did nothing wrong. This man held me at my neck and I couldn't do anything and Sato-chan saved me!"
"Aha, so your name is Sato-san, right? What's your surname?" The first officer continued.
"Sato Ren is my name." He answered.
"Aha, you have to be Fujimoto Airi and this man? He only said his name was ShadowHeart you say?"
"Yes." Ren confirmed.
"Well then, Officer Yamada, please search the man for dangerous objects and his wallet." The first officer told the other and then Officer Yamada started searching ShadowHeart.
He found nothing but his wallet, took it out out of ShadowHeart's pocket and seached it.
"Okay, here is his ID card. His real name is Kuroda Masato, he is twenty years old and lives in Midoridai." Officer Yamada identified.
"Good, then take off the tie and put handcuffs on him."
"Roger." Officer Yamada replied to the first officer. They had to have a hierarchy. The first officer who's name Ren couldn't identify was looking older then Officer Yamada. In fact, Officer Yamada looked really young. "Maybe he was a rookie or something like that?" Ren thought.
Meanwhile, Kuroda Masato, alias ShadowHeart, got put in handcuffs and Officer Yamada handed the tie back to Ren. Then, Officer Yamada stood up with Masato and hold him up.
"Maybe we should call an ambulance Officer Tsukumo?" Officer Yamada asked.
"Yeah, I call one ambulance here. Place him down there in the hallway and while we wait." Officer Tsukumo said.
He did as he said and called for an ambulance while Officer Yamada put Masato back down on the floor in the hallway again. When Officer Tsukumo was finished he turned to Airi and asked her if she wanted to call her parents or if he should do that and she decided to make a call on her own.
She called her mother and she immidiately answered the call. Even though her parents weren't there for Airi at home, it seemed like they were always thinking about her and ready to help her if she called them. Airi told her mother what had happened and that the police was in their apartment. She called loud and clear for Airi's father and the phone so even Ren could hear her and then she said to Airi that they were on their way.
The ambulance came and Masato gained consciousness again but still was dizzy. The officers brought him down to the ambulance and Airi's parents arrived as the ambulance drove off.
They were both in panic but the officers could calm them down again. As they walked into the apartment, they saw Ren with Airi in his arms on the couch.
"Hey, dear. Is everything okay?" They asked her and Ren stood up and wanted to leave but Airi's mother stopped him.
"Wait! Who are you? You saved her right? But I never saw you in the Sunrise Residence." She asked Ren.
"Uhmm, I'm her boyfriend. But that doesn't matter. I saved her, I guess but now you should get the time with her and I don't want to disrupt it."
"Her boyfriend?" Airi's mother turned to Airi. "You didn't told us you had a boyfriend."
"That's probably because we're going out since yesterday Misses Fujimoto." Ren said so Airi didn't had to answer. He wanted to turn around and finally leave but Airi's mother wasn't finished yet.
"Hey!" Ren stopped again. "Thank you for saving her! Please protect her and take care of her."
Ren finally turned around and left as it was planned with Airi. As they waited for her parents she told Ren that she wanted to be with her parents and that he should go home because he did enough for her today. Ren wasn't really sure but he also didn't want to disrupt their family time, Airi needed now the most, so he left and rode home on his bike again.
And with that ended a really tough day.
