Chapter 16:

In The Days That Followed

Kanojo wa Koe dake - A Love Beyond the Screen

The first third of the trimester ended with a frightening surprise for Airi but also for Ren.
The next day, Airi's parents took time off work to be there for their only daughter. The police came and wanted to ask Airi some questions about what had happened the day before and because her parents were with her the whole time as emotional support, Airi could tell the officers that came to the Fujimoto's apartment, what had happened a little bit easier. It still took its time because Airi obviously still hadn't recovered from what had happened but she was strong and tried her best to describe every single detail the man, Kuroda Masato alias ShadowHeart, did and said to her and how Ren was saving her.
Masato suffered only minor bruises and was quickly discharged from the hospital and taken into custody by the police.
After the officers were at the Fujimoto apartment, they went to the Sato residence because they wanted to talk with Ren. It was good that the parents of Ren and Yumeko were at home today as well because Ren's and Yumeko's father didn't have much work to do recently at his office job and their mother had a day off from her job as a nurse. The officers asked Ren about what had happened and what he witnessed and he told them everything. From the open front door until the open apartment door where he could hear Masato talking to Airi. He also told the officers how he was full of anger after he saw Masato and how he was holding Airi in his hands and that's why he had punched him until Masato was unconscious.
The officers said that from what they heard from everyone, Ren did everything right in this situation but should have called the police and should do so next time he witnesses something illegal. Ren was lucky that Masato was someone that Ren could easily handle but the next person could be different and could harm Ren as well.
The situation was as clear as day for the officers because Masato even confessed to his crime and said that he did all this to win Airi only for himself. That's what the officers told Airi and Ren as well.
Masato was a NEET—Not in Education, Employment, or Training—who had a bad childhood and couldn't keep up with society after he graduated from the Midoridai High. He couldn't find a job and the only source of money were his parents, who, despite the distance and troubled relationship between them, always sent him enough money for rent and food. Because he had nothing to do and was lonely he searched for love on the internet and found it with Airi. It was one-sided from the beginning but Masato didn't let the thought get to him and wanted to become Airi's lover so much, he would do anything to get there. Even hurting her was an option. That is what the police could gather about Kuroda Masato, a failed existence.
To help Airi, her parents even took a whole week off from work and did as little as possible with running a well known company.
After her parents had to go to work again, she started to have nightmares about the incident and so she asked Hana first but then also Ren, so as not to burden Hana too much, to sleep at their place or at her place together. So some nights Hana came to Airi's place and some nights Airi came to Hana's place and they slept together in one room which really helped Airi with her nightmares. And some other nights Ren slept at Airi's place but in the living room and some other nights she slept at Ren's place, in Yumeko's room together with her. Yumeko and Airi quickly began to form a bond of love with each other. Yumeko thought of Airi as her new big sister and Airi thought about Yumeko as her new little sister that she could never have had before.
Even though Ren was like a rock in the surf for Airi, their relationship was just too fresh to sleep together in one room, especially after the incident. But Ren didn't care about such trivial things. His only goal was to make his loving girlfriend Airi feel better as much as he could and when he was around her, she really felt safe.
Hana tried the same and was a really good help for Airi as well. She came the first days with Airi's parents working again to her place to cook for her and to distract her from her thoughts but also talked with her about what happened.
Ren did the same but had the privilege of also going out with her, so they went on dates to leave the past behind them. They went in the movie theater, went shopping or in a café in the Shotengai or went for a walk and a picnic at the Kagehama Park, a common and well-known spot for its idyllic scenery and for all the couples that went there on dates.
The first week of the summer vacation, both Airi and Ren met each others parents. Ren met Airi's parents at the day of the incident but there wasn't much to talk about and especially no time for small talk but now he was impressed by how much Airi's parents had to do to keep the company, they led, running. When Airi came to meet Ren's parents it was really embarrassing for Ren. His parents were very happy and didn't make a big deal out of hiding it that their little boy who always sat in his room and played video games was now growing up and had a girlfriend. Airi loved his parents and they went along well with each other. Nearly as well as Airi and Yumeko did.
Airi's and Ren's relationship in general strengthened over the summer vacations and he was always there for her when she needed him. They had a really good time together and time after time Airi could recover from the incident pretty well.
To the end of the summer vacation, she wanted to start live streaming again, in addition to preparing for school, because she paused it because of the incident but Ren thought it would be better to wait a little bit longer until at least the second third of the trimester began.
He told her it would be better to kill time with private tutoring him so he could get better grades in the rest of the trimester.
Airi was really thankful to have met Ren. She looked back at the past third of the trimester and thought about what would've happened if Ren wasn't there, if she never would've met him in the first place.
Ren was really thankful for his best friend Haruto because through his actions on submitting him as a candidate for the class president election, he made all this possible.
Through Haruto's actions Airi wanted to know Ren better, and they got to know each other better in the end. They even fell in love with each other and could grow because of each other.
Airi could heal much better and got saved by Ren and Ren could do something he never thought he could. He let a new person in his life and she's now his girlfriend.
For the future, Ren wants to get along better with his classmates through Airi's help and wants to make some new friends along the way. He wants to trust people again and Airi wants to help him with that.
Airi wants to live a more normal life. She wants to start streaming again but less frequently than before and wants to hide more of her private life for the public. She also wants to cut ties with her "friends" who she hated so much and wanted to focus more on the loving and caring people she has around her now.
The first third of the trimester was full of fun and happy moments and ended with a bad one. But Airi and Ren are holding close together and want to overcome the incident to continue a normal life. Well as normal as it can be for one of the most popular streamers in Japan and one of the most popular students at the Midoridai High with her boyfriend being one of the most unknown students of the school.
And with all that trouble but also very wonderful moments, the summer vacations came to an end.

Afterword

Hey, it's me, the author, Lars-chan! I hope you liked reading my first ever novel I wrote and finished. At least it's story.
I started to enjoy writing at the beginning of 7th grade. I wrote a few stories back then, but never followed through with them, always letting laziness get the better of me. That's why I wanted to take part in this contest, to force myself to finish the story I started.
I chose the spotlight romance genre because I thought it would be more pleasent than urban fantasy to write for me and I think it was.
Because I started in December and I only wrote as a hobby with vocational school and work, as well as holidays with the family in between, I had to cut out some things I wanted to write in order to make it in time but I finally did it.
To be honest, I'm proud of my work. Stylistically, it could certainly be much better, but in terms of the story, I would want to read it.
I would like to thank my few regular readers and I would also like to thank you in advance for the criticism I have already received and may still receive.

Thank you very much!

Lars-chan
