Chapter 39:

The Final Showdown: The Preliminary Battle, Part I

The Otaku Mage

Yamada and her Sniper squad went into position on top of a roof, approximately two and a half kilometers from the Gate. The squad consisted mostly out of long ranged experts. Only Hinako and one other mage were mid-range fighters, who supplemented the squad, in the case of someone closing in on them. They lay ready for the start. Yamada began to cast a spell and a purple lens appeared in front of her eyes. Then small purple particles began to appear around her. The other long-range mages began their preparations as well. Some had rocks that they conjured up and some ice lances. Then they waited. But not long. On one of the closer roofs a few appeared and one jumped down right into the opponents a huge detonation occurred, and purple crystals shot out from the ground penetrating some and then exploding into thousands shards ripping through the bystander. That was Kuro with the signal to start. Yamada began to fire immediately and began to fire barrage after barrage of small purple light at targets in the fray. The other mages did the same.

Kuro was right in the middle of them all he let his purple orbs circle around him at high-speed ripping through everything that they touch while he summoned crystals from the ground to hit targets a bit further back. The Boulder and Hurricane Squad joined him in the melee ripping through the ranks of the enemy combining their ultra-fast wind with razor sharp rocks. Boulder, the leader his squad barreled down a path with a big boulder that he lobed right in the middle of a group of cultists. The start of the fight was going well. Their opposition was successfully in disarray and became easy pickings. Bolts of purple light, icicles and rocks barraged down on a group that tried to form ranks and put defensive barriers up. The blossom and spark squad jumped in from a bit further back and began to close up the ruptures. They were defended by the Blaze and Droplet Squad who pushed every enemy away from them with wide ranging attacks. Kuro concentrated his efforts on the demons that were already here. A lot of them were similar to the one from Hakone as in they were primarily close combat fighters. But others were skinnier ones that focused more on spells. They began to mount a counterattack and soon the chaos was in full effect, the melee in the middle beating down at each other. A bit further a group of cultists supported by one of the casting demons got together and erected a wide defense barrier, from which they started to attack with magic bolts and other mid-range spells. Kuro conjured up a purple crystal and flung it at them, while he simultaneously let his circling spheres rain down on a melee demon in front of him. His projectile hit the barrier and smashed it to smithereens. A barrage of purple light rays shot immediately at the now coverless demon and cultist cutting down a few of them. All has gone well so far. Some mages on their side suffered some damage and wounds, but only a few were serious. Those ones got immediately covered by either a two man team from the Blaze squad, who erected flaming walls around them, to push enemies back and extract them safe, or Boulder just ran through a group of cultist with a wounded person in his hand, dropping them off a bit further back, where the support squad was stations to take them over to the medics even further back. Kuro saw two winged demons take off and fly towards the Sniper Squad. One got shot down halfway from purple projectiles and icicles, the other one got closer and suddenly went up in flames.

“Inferno! You’re up!”, Yamada yelled after shooting down one of the winged demons closing in.

“Got it!”, Hinako called back and jumped forward onto the next roof.

Her hair turned a blazing crimson color, and she began to shoot fireballs with her left and right hand in quick succession, forcing the second winged demon to land, because its leathery wings got holes. It lunged forward with its clawed hand extended. Hinako discharged a fire explosion from her side, dashing her sideways and avoiding the attack, she immediately began to conjure up blue flames from under the demon enveloping it in fire. Three wind blades cut into the chest of it. The second mid-range mage in the squad rushed to Hinako’s aid. Together they bombarded the demon with fireballs and wind blades, denying any possibility of it finding an attack opportunity. It did not take long and the only things left of it were burnt and chopped off pieces.

“Watch out! Cultist on the roof! Ten o’clock!”, Yamada shouted a warning.

It came just in time for Hinako to duck away from an incoming magic bolt. Her wind mage partner rushed towards her and put up a barrier in front of her.

“I defend you attack! Make it big!”, She yelled over the battle noise.

Hinako nodded and began pooling more energy than just a normal fireball. The flame in her hand compacted itself and turned white, while more and more magic bolts hit the barrier. Hinako unleashed her spell and flung it right at the small wall, covering the attacking cultist. After a loud bang and a fiery white explosion, the wall was no more. Same with the cultist. All the immediate threats on them were eliminated and Hinako and the Wind mage jumped back to the roof of the squad. Yamada and the rest of the long-range mages continued their relentless onslaught. Hinako looked further ahead to the ongoing battle in the street and noticed, that one of the seven ruptures were already closed up and two nearly so.
