Chapter 9:
The Cartoon Kid: Shard Hunt.
2:55-Kira's class
"Under mitosis, we have Interphase, Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, Telophase, and Cytokinesis," the teacher intoned. Her voice drifted through the stale afternoon air like it was searching for somewhere better to be.
"The interphase," she continued, "is the preparatory stage—where the cell prepares for division."
At the back of the room, a boy who hadn't paid attention since the semester started slid a folded note toward Kira. She opened it.
Will you go out with me?
Hearts everywhere. Piled like confetti.
Kira's expression curdled instantly. She angled her chair away from him.
Another note slid onto her desk.
So... is that a yes or a no?
Kira calmly wrote a reply, folded the paper, and passed it back without looking at him.
Sure, I'll go out with you... if you eat a bucket of sewage first.
His jaw dropped. Kira allowed the smallest victorious smirk.
Minutes later, the bell freed them.
Kira, Ana, and Zoe spilled into the hallway.
"So what was the deal between you and Andrew?" Zoe asked.
Kira shrugged. "Genius tried asking me out. I told him he'd need to finish a sewage buffet first."
Zoe grinned. "That's our girl."
James and Casey strutted toward them like they owned the hallway.
Ana groaned. "What do you want?"
"Nothing involving you short stacks," James sneered.
Casey added, "Where's Theo? We haven't seen him. We miss picking on him."
"Who's Theo?" Zoe asked.
Kira crossed her arms. "Some nerd from their class. I saved him once. Doesn't mean I track his location. And you two don't get to talk to us like that. We're your seniors. We're allowed to discipline you."
Casey snorted. "What are a bunch of girls gonna do?"
Kira cracked her knuckles. "Glad you asked."
A moment later, James and Casey found their heads shoved into two adjacent lockers. Kira, Ana, and Zoe walked away with regal satisfaction.
3:15 – On the streets
The trio headed home, backpacks bouncing lightly with each step.
"Those crystal shards or whatever are terrible luck," Anna muttered. "Some crazy guy summoned an even crazier guy, and boom. Neighbourhood wrecked."
"At least the supes showed up," Kira said.
Zoe folded her arms. "Still overrated."
Anna suddenly froze. "Uh... Kira? There's someone inside your house."
Zoe's eyes widened. "Didn't you say you live alone? Is that a thief?"
"No." Kira sighed. "That's Hakim. He moved in while his parents recover in the hospital."
"So it's temporary," Zoe said in relief.
"Obviously."
"So..." Anna raised a brow. "How's living with a guy?"
Kira gave them a haunted stare. "Not the best experience."
Before the conversation could spiral, an armored truck screamed past them, a man clinging to the roof and firing high-tech blasters. Police cruisers followed in a desperate chain.
Kira stiffened. "I just remembered—I have to go do something."
Anna snorted. "Scared of a few robbers?"
"No. Scared of failing Professor Adam's class. I still haven't done his diorama. And you know how he gets when he's angry"
"Ah. Good luck," Zoe said.
Kira rushed into her house.
Inside, the air shimmered.
Kira, the Guardian's voice echoed telepathically, a summon was spotted aiding robbers. They passed your street moments ago.
"They did."
Hakim is already here.
"Of course he is."
A portal rippled open as Kira activated her super suit.
Guardian's Chamber
Shards glowed softly inside their containment cylinders.
"I guess we missed a couple shards in Singapore"
"The truck is too fast to pinpoint," the Guardian said. "Teleport back to your home and track it from there."
Hakim summoned his crystal armor. Kira's necklace lit up beneath her suit.
Decibolt frowned. "Where's your C.O.?"
"I upgraded the suit after Digi Blade damaged it," she answered. They went through the portal.
In front of Kira's house
Hakim materialized a sleek hover bike. "Time for a high-speed chase."
"Follow the scorch marks," Kira said. "They left plenty."
Decibolt cracked his knuckles. "Last one to find them cleans the toilet."
He zoomed off.
"Oh, it's on," Kira answered, speeding behind him.
Robbers
Overshot blasted police cars with manic joy. "You're out! And you—and you!"
Police vehicles spun out in screeching arcs.
Decibolt launched himself from his bike, hit the truck with a sonic blast, and sent it tumbling in a violent twist. Kira arrived seconds later.
"Guess who's cleaning the toilet," Decibolt teased.
Kira groaned.
Robbers scrambled out.
"Overshot, get them!" one yelled.
Overshot cracked his neck. His blasters glowed a faint red. "New toys to break."
Kira tapped her visor. "Scanning... tech-based summon. Battle power 518."
Overshot grinned. "Cute. I'll have fun before I break you."
Overshot's fingers danced along the twin blasters, the red circuitry flaring to life like a pair of hungry eyes.
He fired.
Blazing red energy spheres tore across the street. Heat washed over Kira and Hakim as they slammed their palms together.
"Molecular–Deci shield!" they shouted.
A shimmering barrier formed, rippling with violet and blue patterns as the blasts crashed into it. Each impact sent vibrations biting up Kira's arms, and a faint bruise began blooming near her wrist.
Overshot chuckled. "You can hide behind that shield all you want, but it won't save you."
His weapons spun between his fingers; their glowing lines shifted to fiery orange.
"Let's see if it survives my explosive rounds."
The next volley detonated on impact. The shield shattered in a flash of sparks and force. The shockwave hurled both heroes backward. Kira's shoulder scraped the pavement; Decibolt skidded, nose dripping a thin line of red.
Decibolt fired six discs. Overshot swatted them out of the air with precise bursts.
"That attack was slower than a dehydrated sloth," Overshot said. "But hey—if you want slow, I can freeze time for you."
His weapons flicked to a stark white. Ice blasted from one blaster, instantly encasing Kira's leg in a thick block. Frost bit into her skin. She tugged—nothing budged.
"It's so solid," she hissed, "I can't break it!"
"You're touching negative three hundred–degree nitrogen." Overshot smirked. "Chilly, huh?"
His right weapon turned blue. A bolt of electricity slammed into Kira, knocking her onto her back; dirt streaked her visor, and a sharp stinging cut formed across her cheek.
Overshot tried freezing Decibolt at the same time, but Decibolt blurred aside.
"You know multitasking is a bad idea," Decibolt taunted, "especially against me."
His sonic pulse struck Overshot squarely, knocking him down.
Overshot rolled, spun his blasters to orange, and sprayed a hail of explosive rounds. Decibolt dodged, flipping over the blasts.
"Hey Overshot!" Kira called. "Back to sender!"
She swept her arms. Her molecular kinesis seized the explosives midair, whipping them back at their owner. Overshot crossed his arms as they detonated, the force shoving him across the asphalt.
He emerged singed but still smiling.
"Using my attacks against me? Not very bright. But this is—Illumo bomb!"
His blasters flashed yellow. Spheres of light burst overhead, blinding Kira and Decibolt with a burning flare.
"Now feel the heat!"
The red setting returned. Blazing shots hammered them into the ground. Decibolt grunted as a sharp sting opened above his eyebrow, leaving a thin red line.
"You two are weak," Overshot said, shaking his head. "You couldn't even beat me. And I'm not even the strongest in Team Techno."
"Team what?" Decibolt asked.
Overshot puffed up. "Galactic Officer Mira Goni. Digi Blade. Me. And our leader, Techno. We were unstoppable."
"Well, news flash," Kira snapped. "We already took down Digi Blade. Now it's your turn. Gravitational Kinesis Attack III: Up and Down Gravity!"
Gravity shredded the air. Overshot slammed into the ground, then shot upward, then down again. Cracks spidered beneath him.
"Deci Cannon!" Decibolt shouted.
A sonic beam launched Overshot into the distance.
Overshot caught himself by forming a towering ice pillar beneath him. He perched at the top, swaying.
"You look tense," he called. "Let's ease that—"
"Enough of your stupid one-liners!" Kira shot back. "Kinetic Punch Barrage!"
She leapt up the pillar, smashing rapid punches into the top. Overshot jumped off moments before the pillar shattered.
"Let's cool you down," he said.
Cryo blasts engulfed them. Ice swallowed their bodies in seconds.
"I can't believe you wimps beat Digi Blade," Overshot mocked.
Inside the frozen shell, Decibolt's muffled voice growled, "Supersonic Decibolt!"
Energy pulsed. His discs appeared, slicing himself free. Kira's aura burst with full-body repulsion, shattering the ice around her.
"Haaaaa!" she roared, charging.
Overshot swayed aside.
"Kinetic Punch!" she yelled, planting her fist into his ribs. He spun through the air, only to be met by Decibolt sprinting up sonic platforms. A flip, a kick—Overshot crashed to the ground.
He coughed. "Fine. I get Digi Blade losing... but I'm stronger than him."
Kira blinked in front of him. "We don't care about Team Techno. We care about turning you into yellow smoke."
She punched him so hard his blasters clattered aside.
Overshot winced. "Savage. But if you want fast—here!"
The blasters fused. Energy spiraled around him.
"Rapid-fire explo blasts!"
Orange shots peppered the area, too quick to dodge. The force smacked them down again. Kira rolled, bruises forming along her arms.
"If that excited you," Overshot said, "try this. The Fusion Ultra Cannon Beam!"
The cannon screamed with energy. He fired. A beam engulfed the street. Dust tore upward. When the smoke cleared, nothing but a scorched mark remained.
Overshot grinned. "Alright, they're toa—"
Two ripples tore open behind him.
Kira and Decibolt emerged, punching him from both sides. They appeared again in front, double uppercutting him into the sky.
"Gravitational Kinesis Attack IV: Cyclonic Gravity!" Kira shouted.
Overshot spun like a ragdoll in a crushing spiral.
"Final Supersonic Ripple Blast!" Decibolt roared.
Their combined attack detonated against Overshot, slamming him into the earth.
He disintegrated into yellow smoke.
Kira stepped forward. "Easy way or hard way—for you?"
The robber holding the loot squeaked, "Just... take them."
"Decibolt?"
"That's all of them."
Kira gathered the shards, then enhanced gravity just enough to knock the robbers unconscious. They dropped harmlessly.
"Hey!" Decibolt said. "I had that."
"Fastest way to stop them escaping."
"Can't argue."
A portal opened beneath their feet.
Guardian's Chamber
Kira placed the shimmering shards into the containment canister. Their soft glow lit the chamber like captured stars. She exhaled, rolling her aching shoulders; small bruises were beginning to bloom along her arms. Hakim leaned against a console, rubbing a scrape across his brow.
"Well done," the Guardian said, his voice calm yet warm. But more summons will come."
Kira straightened, her pulse steadying. "Then we'll be ready."
Decibolt smirked. "Toilet duty still stands, by the way."
Kira groaned.
