Chapter 19:

Meet the Boss

Dark Fables of Void V2 — Quantum Mix

As the video call connected, a woman's image appeared on the screen. She was attractive, with raven hair and crimson lips, donning a silken platinum suit with black accents. She radiated authority and power, with a no-nonsense air about her. Her sharp gaze fixed on the rebellious trio.

"Ah, our troublemakers, I presume," she said, her accent thick.

The girls exchanged wary glances, their nerves on edge.

Kinsey cleared her throat, trying to maintain her composure. "Uh, yeah, that's us. We prefer the term 'mischievous geniuses', though.”

The boss raised an eyebrow, amused by their audacity.

"Mischievous geniuses, hmm? That's a new take on being a pain in the ass."

The agent, standing nearby, muttered under his breath, "More like obnoxious delinquents.”

Rachel shot him a glare, her voice tinged with defiance.

"Oh, shut it. We had every right to hack their system. That mech was faulty! Someone had to fix it."

The boss's gaze shifted to Rachel, intrigue shimmering in her eyes.

"You were trying to fix the mech, you say?”

Rachel nodded enthusiastically, her passion evident.

"Yep! That mech was malfunctioning big time. It was like a walking catastrophe waiting to happen. We just wanted to help stabilize it. Honest!"

The boss let out a soft chuckle as she leaned forward. "Didn't mommy teach you not to touch things that aren't yours?”

Kinsey couldn't help but chime in, her sass peeking through.

"Well, mommy never said anything about fixing broken things," she replied, her voice dripping with sarcasm.

The boss chuckled again, clearly amused by their boldness.

"I see you've all inherited the art of smartassery.”

Kairy joined in the banter, her courage growing.

"We call it 'rebellious charm,'" she replied, a hint of a smirk crossing her face.

The agent rolled his eyes, muttering under his breath, "More like irritating arrogance.”

The boss, unbothered by the agent's comment, turned her gaze back to the girls.

"Well, I must admit, you three have quite the attitude. It's refreshing, in a way. But let's cut to the chase. You caused quite a stir with that little hacking stunt of yours. I have a proposal.”

The girls exchanged glances, their curiosity piqued.

Kinsey leaned forward, her interest piqued. "A proposal, huh? I'm all ears.”

The boss leaned back in her chair, her gaze steady.

"Since you're such 'mischievous geniuses', as you claim, I have a special job for you. A proposal, if you will. But let me make one thing clear, it's not going to be a walk in the park.”

Kairy, sensing the challenge, couldn't help but feel intrigued.

"We like it when things are challenging," she replied, a determined look in her eyes.

The boss smirked, clearly pleased with their response.

"And I'm sure you'll appreciate the compensation, as well," she added, her tone hinting at a lucrative reward.

That piqued Rachel's interest even more.

"What kind of compensation we're talking about here?" she asked, her voice tinged with curiosity and a hint of excitement.

The boss leaned in closer, a smirk playing on her lips.

"Let's just say, your reward will be substantial. Enough to make your heads spin.”

Kinsey's analytical mind immediately grasped the implications, her expression betraying a hint of caution.

"There's always a catch, isn't there?" she asked, her tone measured.

The boss chuckled softly.

"Ah, you're a smart one, I see. Yes, there's a catch. But don't worry, it's nothing you can't handle, considering your 'mischievous genius' reputation.”

The girls exchanged glances, mulling over the offer.

Rachel bit her lip, contemplating the risks and rewards.

"And what if we don't accept this proposal? What then?" she asked, a mix of defiance and curiosity in her voice.

The boss smirked, her confidence unwavering.

"You're not in a position to decline. Your current predicament ensures your compliance, doesn't it?”

The girls' expressions turned serious, knowing the truth in her words.

Kinsey's jaw clenched, her voice betraying a hint of resignation. "Fair enough. We're listening.”

The boss leaned back, her smirk growing wider.

"Excellent. Here's the deal. I have a mission for you, one that requires your unique skills and, well, your 'mischievous genius'. It's a high-stakes mission with potential rewards beyond your wildest dreams."

The girls listened intently, their interest piqued. "But it won't be easy," the boss continued, her voice lowering to a dangerous tone. "You'll face obstacles and challenges you've never encountered before.”

The girls swallowed, a mix of excitement and concern etched on their faces.

"We can handle it," Rachel replied, her voice tinged with determination.

The boss raised an eyebrow, her gaze flickering with interest. "Oh, really? And what makes you so confident?"

Kinsey spoke up, her tone cautious but unwavering. "We may be young,”

Kairy cleared her throat at that before Kinsey put her train of thought back together and continued, “...but we're far from naïve. We know the risks involved.”

The boss's smirk widened slightly, her gaze locked on Kinsey.

"Ah, there it is again. That 'mischievous genius.' Very well, you've piqued my interest. But let me be clear, this isn't just a matter of courage and intelligence. The task at hand requires more...specialized skills."

The girls waited in anticipation, their curiosity piqued. "What skills?" Kairy finally dared to ask.

The boss leaned forward, her gaze hardening.

"Skills of the...unique variety. Skills that I believe you possess, considering your little hacking stunt with the mech."

The girls exchanged glances, realization slowly dawning on them.

Kinsey's voice was tinged with concern. "You mean...technological expertise?”

The boss nodded, her expression smug.

"Precisely. Your demonstration, while reckless and ill-advised, showcased your knack for technological manipulation. We have a use for that skill."

The girls' faces betrayed a mix of apprehension and intrigue. Rachel pointed at Kinsey. "Hey, SHE'S the techy one here, not us. I'd be useless in your scheme or whatever you're planning.”

The boss raised an eyebrow, a hint of amusement in her expression.

"Oh, don't sell yourself short. Everyone has a role to play in this game. Your strength may lie in other areas."

Rachel's eyes widened, curiosity taking over. "You mean...it won't be all about technology and gadgets and stuff?"

The boss chuckled, her voice tinged with a hint of playfulness. "Oh, there'll be gadgets, don't you worry. But this mission will test more than just your tech savvy. It'll test your mettle.”

The girls exchanged cautious glances, weighing the implications.

Kinsey spoke up, a touch of worry in her voice. "And if we decline...?"

The boss's expression hardened, her reply blunt. "Let's just say, declining isn't really an option. Your current situation should make that abundantly clear."

The girls fell silent, resigned to the consequences.

Rachel asked: "So...what exactly do we have to do?”

The boss smirked, leaning back in her chair.

"Good. You're learning. Now, the mission itself is fairly straightforward. You'll infiltrate a heavily guarded facility, steal a specific item, and get out without being detected. Simple, right?"

The girls exchanged hesitant glances, their eyebrows raised.

Kinsey spoke up, her voice tinged with sarcasm. "Simple? Yeah, because infiltrating a heavily guarded facility without being detected sounds like a walk in the park.”

The boss chuckled softly, amused by Kinsey's sass.

"Ah, that attitude again. I quite enjoy it, I must say. And as for the facility, yes, it'll be guarded, heavily, but remember, you have something they don't."

"So what'll happen if we were to fail?" Rachel inquired, "Would you just forget all this ever happened and let us off the hook?"

The boss shook her head with a cheeky grin, "No...we'll just kill you.”

The girls' faces went pale, fear gripping them tightly.

Kinsey's voice trembled slightly as she asked, "You're...you're kidding, right?"

The boss leaned forward, her eyes gleaming with a dark mirth. "Oh, no. I'm very serious. If you fail, your lives are forfeit. Simple as that. Now...do we have a deal, comrade?"

The girls exchanged worried glances, their fear palpable.

Finally, Kinsey steeled herself, her voice trembling but resolute.

"We have no choice, do we? We'll do it."

With a hum of approval, the boss smirked and reached out a hand, making a head-pat gesture as if she were petting Kinsey. "Good girl. Very good girl."

Kairy swallowed, her voice gaining confidence.

"Firstly, we want guarantees. Once this is over, you let us go free, no strings attached and you forget all this happened."

The boss nodded, her gaze steady. "Guaranteed. And the second condition?”

Kairy's voice gained even more strength, a hint of steeliness.

"Secondly, we want the assurance that no harm will come to anyone we care about while we're on this mission."

The boss chuckled softly, amused by her demands. "Fair enough. And your last condition?”

Kairy steeled herself even further, her voice now filled with determination.

"Lastly, we demand to know your identity. We'll be risking...no, putting our lives on the line for you, and I think it's only fair that we know who we're dealing with."

The room fell silent as the girls waited for the boss's response, their hearts pounding with anticipation.

A slow smile spread across the boss's face as she contemplated Kairy's request. She leaned back in her chair, drumming her fingers on the armrest, and let out a soft chuckle.

"You're quite the audacious one, aren't you? First, demanding guarantees for your own safety, and now demanding to know my identity. You've got guts, I'll give you that."

The girls held their breaths, waiting for her response.

The boss paused for a few more moments, letting the tension build.

"But I suppose I can satisfy your curiosity, since you've been *such* obedient girls."

The girls' eyes widened, their heartbeats quickening as they awaited the boss's revelation.

"Very well," she began, "I'm Katyusha, head of the Platinum Army.”

The girls stared in awe, shocked by the revelation.

"Katyusha..." Rachel repeated. "The head of the Platinum Army..."

The boss, or rather Katyusha, nodded, her smirk growing into a full-fledged smile. "That's right. The one and only.”

The girls were speechless, their minds still registering the magnitude of the revelation.

It was Kinsey who spoke up first, her voice still tinged with skepticism. "You're not just pulling our legs, are you?"

Katyusha chuckled, her smile never wavering. "Oh, I'm very serious. You should consider yourself lucky, getting this rare glimpse into my world.”

The girls exchanged glances, their shock slowly giving way to a mix of excitement and concern.

Kinsey's voice was steady again, her curiosity piqued. "So, we're really working for the head of the Platinum Army herself?"

Katyusha leaned back in her chair, a hint of pride in her voice. "Indeed you are. And let me tell you, it's not an opportunity that comes by often.”

The girls took a moment to process the information, their minds racing with possibilities.

Finally, Kairy broke the silence, her voice tinged with determination.

"Alright. Just tell us the time and place.”

Katyusha's smile widened, seeing the determination in Kairy's eyes.

"Eager, aren't we? I like that. Alright, here's the deal: I'll provide you with all the necessary details, including the location and target, and you'll do the rest. Understood?”

The girls exchanged firm nods, their resolve strengthening.

"Understood." They replied, their voices unified.

Katyusha's smirk widened into a full smile, impressed by their unwavering determination.

"Excellent." She leaned back in her chair, a glint of excitement gleaming in her eyes. "Here's what you need to do…”
