CHAPTER 2 Infiltration

BUBL

CHAPTER 2 Infiltration

The elevator sank so quietly you could hear a pin drop; Alex felt weightless as if the floor dissolved beneath him. He stood between John and the other BLD agents, all dressed in plain clothing, ready to save Alex if it came to it. It was silent; no one even spoke a word. A soft chime sounded, and the doors opened.

As Alex stepped onto the narrow corridor, it was time for John and the other agents to leave. This was a solo mission. As Alex looked around, he saw the narrow corridor stretched farther than he could see. Its walls were made of polished bubl that reflected a ghost-like version of Alex as he stepped inside; lights drifted down the ceiling, guiding them forward like a pulsing heartbeat. He continued to walk farther and farther before John left; he gave him a small device that looked like a coin, but on it was BLD. John had said to press it if anything went wrong and they'd get him out one way or another. Alex continued forward; the floor felt strangely soft beneath his feet, like stepping on the surface of a bubble without breaking it. The material was designed to respond to everything, shifting to Alex's weight, but it was also learning, seeing everything, and relaying information to Glint.

Alex reached a junction where the hallways split in two. Glowing sign letters drifting inside the transparent frame pointed to the right; it said 'Research Wing B'. Exactly where he needed to go, he turned, keeping his head down and trying to blend in, mimicking the stride of other employees. Workers in iridescent uniforms were all around him; their expressions seemed hollow. They were probably bubbles. Glint had been doing unexplainable experiments on humans; he named them bubble clones. They were faster, stronger – you could say better than regular humans. He inched closer to a door labelled 'Lab 7'. He pressed his ID on a verification panel, on the wall. BLD had forged it with terrifying precision. In silence for a moment, nothing happened, then click, it opened. The room glowed pale blue, filled with machines bellowing constantly; at its centre was a huge tank filled with bubble material, filled with drifting lights that pulsed constantly. He entered the room. Slam the door shut. The lights changed to a faint red colour. Now, shrouding the room. Then something spoke, “Unauthorised presence detected.” Alex's blood ran cold; he knew he wasn't alone, and worse, it didn't seem like a good thing at all
