Chapter 16:
The Cartoon Kid: Shard Hunt.
Guardian's Chamber – 2:37 PM
The crystal-lit chamber was quiet except for the faint hum of energy flowing through the walls. Kira and Decibolt stood before the shard console, its surface glowing as dozens of fragments hovered in slow orbit. Both of them reached out at the same time, fingers closing around their choices.
"Overshot."
"Digi Blade."
Light flared as the shards dissolved into streams of energy, taking shape in front of them. Two figures materialized, solidifying with a soft crackle as the summoning completed.
"You once mentioned that you were part of Team Techno, and Techno was your leader," Kira said, wasting no time. "We need you to tell us about him."
"Yeah," Overshot replied simply.
"Let's start with his origin," Digi Blade added.
"It all starts in space," Overshot said, his tone shifting as memory took hold. "Galactic officer Mira Goni is being chased by purple aliens called Ortans from planet Zomat. Galactic officer MG is the guardian of the Techno Cube, a powerful artifact. She's hit by a missile from the Ortan's ship and is sent on a crash course to planet Earth."
Flashback
The sky burned as MG's ship tore through the atmosphere, trailing smoke and fire. It slammed into the middle of a city with an explosion that shattered streets and sent debris flying in every direction. When the dust settled, the hatch burst open and MG emerged, armor scorched, the Techno Cube clutched tightly in her hand as it blinked with pulsing blue light.
"The cube is detecting a possible holder. I have to find them before the Ortans find me."
She stepped into the street, civilians staring in shock as she moved with urgency.
"Zarnold, what planet am I on?"
She look at her watch with an AI called Zarnold.
"You are currently on planet Earth, part of the Milky Way galaxy. Dominant species: humans. Technology is not that advanced, and combat power is even lower."
"A low-level planet. That would explain why everyone's staring; they have never heard of the Galactic Force. Why would the cube choose a conduit from here?"
"The Ortans are closing in. I suggest you find the conduit now."
MG bent her knees, preparing to leap to higher ground, when someone collided with her shoulder.
"Ow! Your glowing cube zapped me... Whoa, what are you wearing?"
MG froze, eyes snapping to the Techno Cube as it pulsed brighter.
"The cube reacted to him. Could he be the conduit? Zarnold, run a scan."
"He's a little over a decade old, and—"
The roar of engines drowned out the rest. Shadows swept across the street as an Ortan ship descended, its hull opening as troops poured out.
"What are those things?"
"Come with me."
MG dragged him into a narrow alley as people screamed and scattered.
"Find them, even if you have to tear this planet apart!"
The Ortan general screamed
"What are they? Who are you?"
"Shut up, I'm thinking. The cube reacted to you, but nothing about you says legendary warrior."
"They are going to find you in a second now." Zarnold said urgency in his voice.
"You'll feel a slight shock, after which you will either become a legendary warrior or be fried to a crisp."
"Wait, don't I get a say?"
"Nope."
She slammed the cube into his chest. He screamed, collapsing to his knees as blue light surged through him.
"Geez, don't be so dramatic. At least you didn't get fried."
"Is that thing in my chest? Why is it in my chest? How is it in my chest?!"
"Three Ortans incoming."
"I see them."
MG drew her three-headed blaster and fired, dropping the aliens in flashes of energy.
"And they saw my blaster."
"Are you going to explain what's going on?"
"I should, but who has time for that?"
She grabbed his hand and pressed it against the cube. Energy erupted, reshaping his body.
"Whoa! I look like a freaking robot!"
"Now I'm going to need you to go fight those aliens."
"What? I can't fight!"
"Sure you can! Don't think about it, just do it!"
"Do what?"
More Ortans charged in.
"Fight them, of course! Are all humans this slow?"
She shoved him forward. Plasma bolts flew, but his body moved on instinct, dodging effortlessly. Electricity surged from his hands, blasting the Ortans off their feet.
"Okay, that was cool, I could get use to it."
Flashback Over
"They defeated the Ortans that day," Digi Blade said. "Techno joined the Galactic Force, where they later met us, and we became a special division called Team Techno."
"Great story, really, but how does that help us defeat him?" Kira asked flatly.
"Judging by the way you fought us, it will take a miracle for you to defeat him."
"The fact that you're still standing here tells us he didn't go all out."
"I'm pretty sure he went all out."
"Did you fight a three-headed electro dragon?"
"No."
"Our point exactly."
"Try talking to MG. She has been with him the longest and she was the Techno Cube's guardian."
"We haven't found any shard with her in it."
"Then unless you find her, you two are doomed."
"You guys are useless."
"I release you from your existence."
The two figures vanished in flashes of light as the shards returned to the canister.
"Now we need to find a shard with Mira Goni."
"No, what you need to do is rest."
The Guardian tapped his staff against the floor. The portal's glow dimmed instantly.
"What did you do?"
"I deactivated the portal from this end, so only people from outside can portal in."
"What are we supposed to do?"
"There's a huge library behind that door."
He pointed his staff toward a massive chrome door.
"You can read, take a nap, anything, but no fighting."
"This is ridiculous."
They stepped inside.
The Library
Floating chrome bookshelves drifted silently, lined with glowing tomes and holographic interfaces. Soft light rippled across the polished floor as data-streams flowed between terminals like slow, artificial constellations.
"Last thing I want is for you to bother me, so you go left and I'll go right."
Kira turned on her heel and headed down a corridor of suspended shelves, each one rotating lazily as if deciding whether to acknowledge her presence. Hakim went the opposite direction, boots echoing faintly in the vast space.
For the first stretch of time, Kira tried to ignore everything. She sat cross-legged beneath a hovering shelf, eyes closed, aura drawn inward. The air vibrated faintly as she regulated her breathing. A chandelier nearby rattled, then steadied. Sweat beaded at her temple. A thin trickle slid down the bridge of her nose, more irritation than injury, and she wiped it away with the back of her glove, annoyed at herself for slipping concentration.
Across the library, Hakim poked at a holographic terminal. It unfolded into a three-dimensional star map that promptly began auto-scrolling historical battles.
"Of course," he muttered to himself, scrolling faster. "Mandatory reading."
He leaned against a shelf, arms folded, skimming tactical breakdowns. After a while, boredom won. He tried shadowboxing in place, throwing slow punches, careful not to actually strike anything. One mistimed pivot clipped a floating console. It sparked and snapped shut, and Hakim hissed.
"Great. Even the library fights back."
Kira eventually stood and tested her Molecular Kinesis again, lifting a cluster of books. They wobbled, bumped together, but she stabilized the load and held it there, jaw clenched, refusing to let frustration win.
After a long while, the silence grew heavier. Not peaceful. Pressurized.
Kira broke it by activating a nearby console. A projection flared to life, displaying archived summon profiles. She skimmed them rapidly, noting patterns, power thresholds, failure points. None of it gave her what she wanted. No MG. No Techno Cube data beyond surface-level classifications.
Hakim eventually wandered close enough to notice.
"You find anything useful?" he asked, not expecting much.
She didn't look at him. "Nothing that matters."
He shrugged and flopped onto the floor, staring up at the drifting shelves.
They lapsed back into silence, each killing time in their own way. Minutes stacked into something heavier.
Two hours later...
Hakim lay flat on his back, hands behind his head, staring at the ceiling. Kira sat nearby, actually reading. Both of them looked calmer, but not rested. The kind of calm that came from enforced stillness, not recovery.
A familiar presence pressed against the air.
"You guys look relaxed."
Hakim sat up instantly. "Does that mean we can leave?"
"If it were up to me, you would stay longer, but there's summon activity in Belize."
Kira was already on her feet. "Is it Techno?"
"No, but there are three of them."
"Activate super suit!"
"Summon crystal armor!"
They moved in sync, energy flaring around them as armor formed. Kira stepped forward confidently and walked straight into nothing.
"I forgot."
The Guardian tapped his staff. The portal shimmered.
In Belize
Chaos filled the streets. Summons rampaged as civilians fled in every direction.
"We need to get the civilians to safety."
"My Sonic Step would be the fastest way."
"Doesn't it need time to rest? You might need it later."
"King Blob, Weaponista, Particulizer—we've got company!"
The summons turned, while the civilains made a run for it
"That takes care of that. Now, the red blob with hands and no legs has some kind of spiral with an orb in its stomach and a combat power of 592. The one in black armor, holding two black rods with circular saws on each, has a combat power of 586, and the one in a neon suit with particle designs has a combat power of 599."
"They couldn't even break 600."
"But there are three of them."
"Particulizer, come with me. King Blob, wait for my signal!"
She clicked a button on her rods, the saws began to spin, and she raced towards them. Particulizer transformed into a swarm of particles
'Taste my steel!' Weaponista roared
Her weapons swinging cutting through the ait, they dodged effortlessly. She then clicked another button, sending the saw flying, but they managed to dodge again. Particulizer swarmed around them, stopping their movement.
"King Blob, now!" Weaponista commanded
The orb began to spin, and he fired a white blast from his mouth. Particulizer swarmed out of the way before the blast hit the ground
"Cheap shot! Sonic Storm!"
"You guys are weak. I don't care if the Guardian calls it overconfidence; I'm not wasting any more time with you!"
"Full Body Repulsion!"
Kira smashed Particulizer into the ground.
"Sonic Step!"
Weaponista Was over powered by the swift punched and fell hard.
"You won't get me!" King blob bellowed
He fired another cannon blast.
'Repulsion Field!"
She reduced the cannon blast to sparks.
"Kinetic Punch Barrage!"
Sending him crashing on the ground.
"I would actually rather be in the library right now!"
As she raised her aura.:
"Gravitational Kinesis Attack II: Anti-Gravity!"
She increased the radius of affected gravity, making all of them rise.
"Gravitational Kinesis Attack IV: Cyclonic Gravity!"
As she trapped them in a vortex.
"Supersonic Decibolt—Final Supersonic Ripple Blast! "
The summons vanished in yellow smoke.
"You know the drill; give us the shards, or do we have to take them?"
"Let's team up! She says we can totally defeat them!"
"I told you our summons were too weak."
"Shut up, both of you!"
As the three reluctantly handed over their shards before being knocked out.
"Now that you're done with that, back to the library." The Guardian said Telepathically.
"Ugh, we should have stalled."
The portal opened, swallowing them in light.
