Chapter 13:

The Truth

The Hollow Silence

H and his men ganged up on N

A cold steel of the needle was the last thing I felt before the world went black.

When I woke up, the air tasted like rust and old grease. I was tied to a wooden chair, my wrists burning. I saw J standing there, looking terrified or so I thought.

"What are you doing here? Leave! Please!" I screamed, my voice cracking.

H stepped out of the shadows, a sick smirk on his face. He leaned down, his breath hot against my ear. "I know you're in love with her, N. Tell her

Tell her now, or I'll chop her into pieces right in front of you."

My heart stopped. "How do you know?"

"Baby, it's obvious," H laughed. "I'm pretty sure she's known for a long time, too."

I looked at J. My best friend. My only family left. "J, please, just go..."

"No! Tell me why I'm here!" J shouted. "Tell me what you have to say!"

I couldn't hold it back anymore. The truth poured out of me like blood from a wound. "I'm in love with you, J! I've been in love with you since we were kids! I didn't want to mess up what we had.. I-I hate that you have a boyfriend. It hurts so bad it kills me every day."

The silence lasted for a few seconds J didn't look shocked. She didn't look sad. She looked... satisfied.

"I know you do," J said simply.

My heart didn't just break,it shattered. "You... you knew? This whole time?"

J shrugged, a cold glint in her eyes. "I guess you could say I'm selfish. I like the way you blush. I like the attention you give me. It makes me feel good but I don't like you like that. I never will."

"Then why?" I sobbed. "Why let it go on?"

"Because," J stepped closer, her voice dropping to a whisper. "I don't want you with anyone else. I want you to want me while I do whatever I want."

I looked at her really looked at her and realized the girl I loved was a monster. "You should have died," I whispered. "Not my family. YOU."

After H let J walk away, thinking he had finally broken me, I played my last card.

"I'll be yours," I lied. "Just untie me."

H, blinded by his own obsession folded instantly. The second the ropes hit the floor, the "kind girl" from high school died. I leveled him with a punch that sent him reeling. His men swarmed me, but I didn't feel the pain. I felt the rage.

One by one, they fell. I took their own blades and turned the warehouse into a graveyard. When I walked out into the night, my face was covered in blood, and my eyes were empty.
