Chapter 14:
The Hollow Silence
When I got home I tried to end it. I couldn't take the loneliness. I found a bottle in my bathroom, didn't even read the label, and swallowed four pills, praying for the end.
I woke up twenty minutes later with the worst stomach cramps of my life.
I looked at the bottle. Laxatives.
sprinting for the bathroom. I spent the next twenty four hours in a different kind of hell.
Then came the knocking.
It was Mullet Girl. She looked wrecked. Her eyes were swollen like she'd been crying for days. When she saw my face the cuts, the bruises she grabbed me.
"I was so worried! Talk to me!"
I told her everything. The warehouse, H, the truth about J. I told her I tried to end it because I was all alone.
"Don't you ever do that again," she whispered, hugging me so tight I could barely breathe. "You aren't alone. I won't leave you. I love you, N."
I pushed her back, my walls going up instantly. "Are you joking? Is this a game to you too? Get out!"
I slammed the door in her face. I couldn't trust anyone. Not after J.
Days passed. My phone was a graveyard of texts from J, begging for forgiveness. I ignored them all. Then, a knock at the door.
It was Mullet Girl again. She didn't wait for an invite she walked right in.
"Listen to me," she said, her voice shaking. "Ever since you ran into me, I've liked you. I know you've lost people. I know you're scared. But I'm not them. I'm willing to stay by your side forever if you'll let me."
I didn't say a word. I just leaned in and kissed her. It wasn't like the movies it was hungry, desperate, and real.
Next Day
The sun was actually shining. I checked my phone: 200 missed calls from J.
I didn't even read the texts. I just blocked the number.
When J showed up at my door an hour later, crying, I didn't feel anything but pity.
"You played in my face, J. You betrayed me. I loved you, and you treated me like a toy. I'm done."
I closed the door on the past.
Walking to the movies with Mullet Girl, her hand in mine, I finally smiled. A real one.
"Thank you for today," I whispered. "I like you so much."
