Chapter 9:
Hazel the mentor
On Samantha's and my walk back home from the entertaining bar fight. My mind can't help but wonder back to my high school days.
<( -_-)> <(☆.☆)>
School has ended with the bells tolling over head. Most of the students are booking it out of the classrooms and down the halls. All in hope to escape the long day of lessons, my lessons don't end at school so there is no rush for me. Heather, my mentor and guardian while on Pelitos along with my home room teacher, placed me in with the sophomore class even though I'm eighteen and was a senior back on Earth. Something about I need all the knowledge I can get and that my body isn't aging here so might as well. I fought with her when she originally said I would start as a freshman. Her response to that was giving me tests to test out of classes but I bombed the supernatural studies so this will be my life for the next few years.
I use to like that school got me away from home back in the day but now learning is expected out of me. So that's a downer, along with the bullies at this school. Since I'm technically an outsider they make comments and whispers on anything and everything involving me. Not a huge fan of the school uniforms either. I mean they are kinda cute with the dark jacket and skirt but the pink bow could go.
Matilda doesn't care about that stuff though. Most of the whispering stops when she is visible to others though. She told me last year before I came to school she "accidentally" turned a classmate into a frog.
"Hazel come quickly." Matilda says grabbing my hand and pulling me down the hall with her. Even back in high-school she wore a dark robe and had the hood up.
"Who, what, where? Why are we in a hurry?" I plead hanging onto my school bag as it tries slipping from my shoulder.
"I had a premonition." She whispers.
"Good? Bad?" I ask for more context.
"I saw Chelsea crying." Matilda states leading the way to the back of the school where the sports fields are located.
"Was she injured in your vision?" I ask knowing it takes a lot pain for Chelsea to cry.
Matilda shakes her head in her hood. "No. She told me earlier she was going to confess her feelings. I think James turns her down so I want to get there first and stop it from happening."
I have known Chelsea has a crush on James for awhile now. I question why she has feelings for him sometimes but pretty much the whole student body either is in love with him or is envious of him. Then there's me, yea he is attractive with his dark eyes and brown hair and jawline but players will always break your heart. Well most people will break your heart so in the end I stay away from them. While my feminine friends, I hang out and talk with them in small doses because I am still not use to having friends. They very well could leave me too.
Chelsea comes into view of us. She is standing by a small brick out-building used for storage near the bleachers. Her head is lowered with her hands over her mouth.
Hand in hand Matilda and I run up to her gently asking if she is alright. Chelsea shushes us by putting her hands over our mouths. She then looks over her shoulder.
"Did you hear that?" Cellia a preppy girl in our class asks.
"Hear what?" Replies Cindy Lue, the leader of the preppy girls in our grade.
The snap of a makeup product loudly shuts. They are on the other side of the small brick building. We quietly stand beside Chelsea to listen in on their conversation since it clearly upset Chelsea but she wants us all to stay quiet.
The two preppy girls are together for everything. Cellia copies everything Cindy Lue does on top of that. Except outwardly showing she likes James. Part of the school wants Cindy Lue and James to be together or believes they are. I have mixed feelings on if he is telling the truth on turning down every girl and occasional guy. Plus Cindy Lue has her ways of driving off obsessive fangirls or people she feels are getting too close to James.
Anyways the current Cindy Lue trend is long platinum blonde straight hair and flaunting their other features. When Cindy Lue does something new like paint her nails, makeup style, rolling her skirt up, ear piercings, getting a boyfriend or new bag, you can bet Cellia will be copying her by the next day.
The only difference is Cindy Lue is a little taller and just a touch thinner than Cellia. Cellia in general looks healthier with her more rounded features.
"Oh. Must have been an echo from the boys locker room." Cellia brushes off the sounds we made. "You were saying?"
"Right. You know that little blacksmith b****? I overheard her saying she is going to tell my James she has feelings for him. Today no less, at this spot. Looks like she chickened out!" Cindy Lue cackles.
"What? Oh my! How could she! She must have realized her place." Cellia nervously laughs with her.
There is a moment of silence before we hear a gasp from Cellia.
"What if he sees you doing that?" Cellia whispers.
"Then he gets a peek. My gurls are for him only anyways." Cindy Lue states with the sound of fabric moving.
I look over and see a bug eyed James standing not too far from this whole mess. Then we lock eyes.
"Oh James!" Cindy Lue squeals before running and jumping onto him.
With his eyes still locked on me, he raises his hands stiffly to try to push her back down onto the ground. Then he starts stuttering and looking back and forth between all the girls.
"I, I didn't want..." James calls out to my group. Cindy Lue leans back hanging onto James with a sinister smile and cleavage showing.
I can hear Chelsea sniffling.
"What perverts do in their own time is none of our business. Bye, see you hopefully never." I state grabbing Chelsea's right hand while Matilda places her hand on Chelsea's back and we take off out of there. "Come on. You can do better than him."
Not long after that James apologized to Chelsea about their meet up and that he can't be in a relationship with her and that he is in love with someone else. The whole time claiming that person is not Cindy Lue. I avoided him like the plague every time he approached me for a few months. He still talked to everyone like nothing happened though.
"You alright?" Samantha asks after I draw on a long sigh. Her words bring me back to the present as we approach my house.
"Yea, just remembered something from high school." I say with a shiver.
"Oh." She says following me inside.
After we start settling in for the night, I'm trying to clean up the catch all spot on the kitchen bar. Samantha offered to help but most of it is trash or bills that I have to file. So she curls up on the side of the couch reading one of my books.
What book did she grab again? I should have checked since some are a bit too spicy for high school ages. Oh I remember that one. It starts off with a slow burn and builds up to... Oh there is a really spicy scene near the end. Oh well she will probably loose interest since it took me several attempts to get to the half way point.
A golden scroll pops out of thin air in front of me. With a quick grab I catch it before it drops very far.
"Nice catch." Says Samantha.
"Thanks. I've had practice." I say opening the scroll.
[Hazel,
Funny thing you should say practice. I need you to teach Samantha how to properly channel her mana into her attacks. A band of demons will be in the area in three days. Samantha will need to know how to rapidly jab her spear, accurately throw her spears and blessing allies since she also needs to learn poison spears.
Before you think you can't do it. I know you can.
With love aways, Aba
P.s. Don't forget the cathedral is always open.]
I drop the scroll into the sink as it bursts into flames, muttering thanks for the pep talk.
"A gold scroll that bursts into flames after someone reads it is still hard to believe. It feels like a waste." Samantha says watching me.
"It took me a bit to get use to it since he likes to be showy sometimes." I reply. "Aba wants me to train you on a few moves over the next three days."
Even though all of these attacks take 3-5 full days to learn.
"Alright should we start now or...?" Samantha tilts her head like a dog would.
"I guess. I think the training yard might be being used right now though." I look outside at the new moon. "Lets start with how to do blessings since I've been told to teach you poison attacks."
I plop down on the opposite side of the couch as her. Turning I face her while cross legged.
"Poison?" She tilts her head the other way.
"Not til I have antidotes on hand. First blessings then we will work on the more dangerous moves."
"Kay." She nods. Setting the book down she faces me and crosses her legs too.
Maybe Aba is right. With her willingness to learn we will only need three days of training.
