Forward!

The first step is always the hardest. The moment I step out, everything will be over. The next ones will decrease in significance until they inevitably reach the point where they mean nothing.

“At least take some food.” Says the voice in my head—reason.

That defeats the point, obviously. I take a moment to look at my backpack: empty, save for some pills. For a second, I forget why they’re here.

“Right…” I remember, “It’s in case I decide to…”

I take a deep breath, “Three, two… one.”

I open my eyes and… I did it, I am outside, free. I have just enough money to get to the highway. I take the bus – something I’m not used to – and end up with just a few cents, ones I then decide to throw into a sewer.

Now, I am nothing more than a lone teenage girl, kilometres away from where she lives, staring at the road that stretches beyond what she can fathom.
