This would be the start of something fresh. Yuki jogged down the narrow staircase built into the mountain. Sweat ran into her blouse because she’d already climbed the other side. Leaves displayed a brilliant array of oranges, reds, and yellows. A few scattered in the chill breeze, blowing past her face.

The newly built campus of Gaienbu University stretched across a wide clearing below. The clock tower of the Founder’s Hall towered over the center. Its chimes mimicked the clock of London’s Elizabeth Tower at it struck eight in the morning. Yuki clutched a rail as she craned her neck and surveyed the stairwell for Asami. They were supposed to meet at this spot overlooking the clock tower. She ran down to the platform and leaned over the mountainside. Leaves blew past in a flurry of downwind.

Her dress was disheveled. An empty can of Hoss coffee peeked from the top of her half-open purse. Heavy book bag weighed on her shoulders. She put her elbows on the rough cement safety wall and sighed at the clouds.

“Where’s Asami? She promised she’d be here and I’m on time for a change,” she whined. Puffed cheeks sunk into her palms, “But wow, this sure is nice. It’s not even that cold yet.”

Straight black hair swung as she spotted Asami in her side vision. Her hand hopped from the shaped rock slag and swung an uneven wave above her head. Asami stopped on the lower steps and covered her eyes as she looked up. She had long straight black hair like Yukis, but her eyes were less bright.

Yuki burst, her boots tapped the steps as she skipped several with each hop down. Hair flew backwards against the wind. The heavy bag jostled under her hair, and against her back. Boot leather screeched on pavement as she conducted a jarring turn before flying down the steps with her arms outstretched and purse bouncing outward.

“Asami! You came!”

“Have I ever not come!? Slow down! We’re both gonna-”

Time was short. A hand pressed the rail while Asami braced. They crashed into each other. Shoulders connected as Yuki flew into Asami for a tight hug. Chests pressed together enough to smooth the wrinkles on their blouses. Lips pressed tightly. Asami struggled to not fall backwards down the long cement staircase while Yuki pushed her advantage. Asami’s skirt rubbed the pipe handrail after she turned Yuki around. They stayed in the kiss. Slender fingers massaged narrow shoulders tender while Yuki kept their lips merged aggressively.

The mountain shrine wasn’t a common spot for others to visit, so they made out with some assurance of privacy.

Yuki pulled her lips away while keeping a firm grip on her girlfriend’s shoulders, “I wouldn’t let you fall. I knew exactly how much force you’d be able to handle while catching me and I calculated my trajectory and force appropriately!”

“What if you miscalculated!”

A wavering rope bridge of saliva listed between their lower lips as Yuki smiled, “I never miscalculate,” and she dove back in for seconds.

Leaves swirled around, then rained from the trees as Asami pressed Yuki’s cheeks to pull them together more tightly. Yuki pulled back and adjusted her glasses, “What time do we have the advanced algebra class?”

“You forgot the schedule already; it starts at nine-thirty in room nine-B.”

“Oh right, the professor is that crazy foreigner with the long white curly hair tied back in a pony-tail! He’s pretty smart though. I respect his teaching style.”

“Why are you talking like read the lines from a Japanese text book?”

“What do you mean I’m talking like I read the line from a Japanese text book. I speak Japanese, so this is how I’m supposed to talk. I only wish for you to understand me more easily so that your listening experience is a pleasant one.”

Asami burst out laughing while Yuki tilted her head in confusion. Yuki started laughing herself, nervously while her cheeks flushed. Distance between them closed so their noses touched. Yuki’s cheeks turned bright red.

“You’re doing it again.”

“Doing what,” Yuki huffed, “May I ask?”

“Going into alien mode. You do it every time I say something even mildly teasing. You know sometimes I just want you to be comfortable with me.”

“I attempt to make you comfortable through my genuine affection for you. I apologize for any lack of understanding due to differences in our way of speaking.”

Asami took a deep breath and let it all out in an exasperated sigh, “You should be glad your hugs and kisses make up for the way you talk sometimes.”

“Hugs and kisses!” Yuki spread her arms out to wrap her girlfriend in another hug. Kisses came in a flurry against Asami’s cheek while Yuki felt her squirm.

“We’re going to be late idiot!”

Yuki firmed her stance, stared Asami in the eyes, and let out a deep breath from her nostrils, “You’re right, one more!” She pressed Asami for one last make-out session and wasn’t denied. School bags dropped, they coiled against each other on the steps as lips were awkwardly nibbled.

An old man’s footsteps from below halted them. They pulled apart and gathered their belongings. Yuki led the way towards campus with Asami jogging after her. They passed an old man with a curved back, who walked with the assistance of a cane. He lifted his head and smiled at the red-faced young ladies as they squeezed by the other side of the long cement stair walkway.

Yuki stopped and glanced back at the old man.

Asami bumped into her, chest against her back, “What are you doing?”

Slender fingers tugged on the tan sleeve as Yuki whispered, “That old man’s all bent over but look how fast he’s walking. He’s not even out of breath. He’s not struggling at all.”

“So, it’s not our business.”

“Yeah, yeah, you’re right. I’m always worrying about things that don’t have anything to do with me. Let’s go then.”

A shiny purple stone glowed on the safety wall of the corner platform. Yuki stopped again, this time Asami passed her. The stone felt smooth on her fingers, a soft round pebble with a slight glow in the sun. It was smooth violet. She sniffed it; no scent. Leaves twirled by. It sat gently on her tongue.

“Yuki, what are you doing?”

“Nuffin!” she blushed with cheeks bulged out. The stone made her tongue feel tingly.

“Did you put something in your mouth? So help me, if you put something in your mouth, I’m going to pry open your jaw and remove it!”

The stone pressed between her tongue and the roof of her mouth. Yuki blushed as she shook her head. She walked down the steps with a careful, ladylike, grace while her tongue pressed the shiny stone in her mouth.

Arms folded across Asami’s chest as she stood in place while raising an eyebrow.

Yuki continued walking, she slipped the stone under her tongue, “I’ll hab you know I’be gotten ober such bile habits.”

“You’re twenty years old; you can’t put things in your mouth just because they’re shiny.”

“Did you know babies learn about the world using their mouves?”

A slender palm pushed against Yuki’s chin, “Now, spit it. Spit it out now! I’m not worried about your spit. We share it all the time. So spit it!”

Her head shook violently, “I don’t hab nuffin!”

The side of Asami’s hand rammed Yuki’s chin. The stone came out from under her tongue, “I said now, into my palm!”

Another vigorous shake of her head slipped the stone to the back of her mouth. It slid down her throat. Yuki gulped then slapped her cheeks, “You made me swallow it! You pressured me and now I swallowed it! I have a gemstone in my stomach!”

Asami recoiled, “I’m sorry. How do you feel? You shouldn’t put things in your mouth though! This is exactly why! We better get you to a doctor.”

Yuki waved off the suggestion, “It’s a little smooth gemstone. I’m sure if I wait long enough, it’ll work its way through. I hope I’m able to find it though. It was pretty. I wanted to keep it, not eat it.”

“Then why did you put it in your mouth!” Asami yelled, “I swear sometimes with you-” Yuki looked like she was about to cry, “It’s never a dull moment. Ahh, I didn’t mean it. I still love you the way you are. Never change. Just, don’t put random things in your mouth. Change that one thing.”

Yuki nodded, then spoke at the top of her voice, “Got it captain! No more random things. From now on the only thing I’ll put in my mouth is-”

A finger went against Yuki’s lips, “Let’s get to school. We’re going to be late now.”

“Not if we run!” Yuki bounded down the steps.

“Wait!” Asami called, jogging after her.
