Chapter 1:
A random Shinigami moved into my Room
The bed was right behind me, but the floor felt warmer tonight.
Rain pounded against the roof, loud but steady. I closed my eyes and listened to it like it was music. Every drop felt controlled, like it had purpose.
“Iaji, what are you doing?” Her voice was lazy and stretched. I ignored her.
“I’m bored, Iaji… let’s do something, Iaji… don’t ignore me… Iaji… Iaji… Iaaaji…”
She kept getting louder.
I sighed. “Can you let me relax for one minute?” She leaned closer and gave me an innocent look. It almost worked.
“Fine,” I muttered, sitting up. “What do you want to do?” Instead of answering, she turned dramatically toward the window and exhaled.
“You used to be different, Iaji.”
“I did not.” “When I first came here… you were full of energy.” “That was shock.”
She placed a hand over her chest as if deeply wounded, stretching the black fabric of her shinigami robe slightly.
“But now I’m just… annoying to you.” There was something sharp in the way she looked at me.
“Ah. What do you want?” I asked, feeling a strange bitterness in my chest. Her expression instantly changed.
“Oh hey look!” She pointed outside.“That guy just slipped! Hahahaha!” I stared at the ceiling.
“Ahaha poor guy,” she continued, completely abandoning whatever emotional scene she was trying to create.
I laid back down. The rain had softened now. One drop every two seconds. Slower. Peaceful.
Then...
Thud.
Thud.
Thud.
“What are you doing?!” I asked.
When I looked, Yew was running around the room like a five year old.
And Yuki was chasing her.“Aww, try to catch me! Ahahaha, poor thing!” Yew laughed.
Yuki is my cat. I adopted her because being able to see spirits sometimes made me uneasy. Having something warm and alive around helped.
Her fur was soft as snow.
“Aha! Iaji, look!” Yew suddenly grabbed Yuki and held her like a baby. “I wonder how you got adopted by someone like Iaji. He never pays attention to me. How could he take care of you? Poor thing.”
“Hey!” I shouted.
Ignored. “Fine,” I muttered. “Yew, take care of Yuki. I’ll be back.”
Still ignored. They were already cuddling like I didn’t exist.
For some reason… it felt nice. I went to the store and bought some snacks.
When I returned, both of them were asleep. Yuki was curled up on top of Yew’s chest. The black shinigami robe looked strangely comfortable like that.
I sat down and opened a snack pack. Crack. Both of their eyes snapped open instantly.
“I want too!!” Yew shouted.
“Meoww~~” Yuki added.
I tossed an ice cream toward Yew and called Yuki over. I rubbed her head gently before giving her a small fish treat.
Watching her eat was peaceful. Then I noticed Yew. Her eyes were glowing.
“Wooooo… what is this!?” she asked, holding the ice cream like it was some sacred object.
She took a huge bite.“Ahh! It’s cold… and… tasty!” She devoured it in under a minute.
Then suddenly “Ahh my brain!! It hurts! Iaji it hurts!! IAJI!!”
I laughed.
“Relax. Calm down. It’s just brain freeze. Who told you to take such a big bite?” She glared at me, holding her head dramatically.
“Iaji… this was your plan all along, wasn’t it!?” I continued laughing. The rain outside had completely stopped.
But somehow, my peaceful evening was gone. And this was only her first time.
