Chapter 1:
Sofia in the stars
As soon as my eyes opened, I saw that I was inside a capsule made of glass. My hands, legs, everything was connected to some kind of wires. Panic rushed through me.
The next thing I noticed was a group of people wearing white coats. I could see their mouths moving, but I couldn’t hear anything. Some of them looked excited, smiling as they watched me.
Then I realized something else. I was inside some kind of liquid. Moments later, the capsule opened. For the first time, I breathed through my nose.
The air felt cold at first, but then it slowly became comforting. Someone handed me a towel so I could cover myself. When I tried to walk, my feet hurt and I fell immediately.
I tried again. This time the pain was weaker, and I managed to stand. One of them finally spoke.
“Welcome, Sofia”
Who was Sofia? Was that my name? I didn’t understand, but I nodded anyway.
“Follow me. Let’s get you some clothes,” she said as she began to walk. I followed her. As we moved through the room, I noticed everyone staring at me.
Some of them were clapping, though I didn’t know why. “Try this,” she said, placing a set of clothes in my hands.
It was a warm suit. The fabric felt soft. I put it on. “You look good,” she said. I don’t know why, but hearing those words made me feel… good.
She then told me that I should rest. “Just call me whenever you need something,” she said gently. For the first time, I spoke.
“O…k.”
I sat on the bed. It was small, but big enough for me. My eyes were fixed on the blue planet outside the window. It was big, so big that I couldn’t look away from it.
My hands moved toward the glass, and I gently touched the window. My fingers hurt when they made contact, but after a moment the pain faded. I could see white clouds moving slowly across the surface.
I wondered what it would feel like to walk on that planet. I stood up and tried to walk again. Just a few minutes ago walking had felt easy, but now it felt harder.
My body was getting tired. I slowly walked around the room in a circular motion, and after a while I sat back on the bed again. Walking was fun.
For a moment I stared at the wall. I don’t know why, but it felt intriguing. Staring at it made my mind wander. I started imagining things. First I imagined myself flying through those white clouds outside.
Then I imagined walking on that blue surface far away. Suddenly the door opened. It was the same woman from earlier.
“Sofia, meet your new friend,” she said. In her hands she was holding an egg. It was big.
“It hasn’t hatched yet. Take care of it,” she said as she gently handed it to me. “Be careful not to break it.”
I nodded.“Keep it warm,” she added before leaving the room. The egg immediately drew my attention. It felt fragile in my hands. I wondered what would hatch from it.
For a few minutes I simply held it and stared at it. Then I remembered her words. Keep it warm.
I wrapped the blanket around the egg and hugged it gently, trying to give it more heat. For some reason, doing that made me feel… good..
