Chapter 2:
Sofia in the stars
In my arms, the egg was still there. I had slept while holding it. The first thing I saw was the egg, then the blue planet outside the window behind me. It was beautiful as always. I tried talking again.
“Hhhh.” I made some kind of noise. Talking made my ears vibrate and… I liked it. “Aaaa.” I tried doing it again. “Eeee.” And again. “Ooooo.” And again. It was fun. My ears were vibrating.
Then she came again. “Looks like you are having fun,” she said. I tried talking back. “Eee,” I said. “No, not like that. Try again.” I nodded and tried again, but I couldn’t. “Don’t force yourself. I’ll be back soon.”
She was kind to me. I only remembered her face from all those people. The egg was warm. The blanket was still wrapped around it. For some reason, my arms couldn’t leave it.
I named it Eggy. My eyes were on it all day. It was white and big and beautiful. I didn’t know why it didn’t have a mouth. I wanted to feed it. I tried walking while holding it, and walking was easier now.
Breathing was fun too, and talking… talking was the best. My ears were always vibrating when I said something. I walked while talking and it was even better.
Then I fell. The egg fell on the floor. Tick. A crack. Did I break it? Eggy, did I hurt you? I’m sorry. My chest felt a sharp feeling. I didn’t know what it was, but my eyes were wet. The crack was even bigger now.
Eggy!
